A Comparative Analysis of Science Philosophical Views and Instruction Strategies for Open-inquiry between Teachers of Science-gifted and Teachers of General Students (과학영재 지도교사와 일반교사의 과학철학적 관점과 자유탐구 지도방식 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the science philosophical views and instruction strategies for open-inquiry between teachers of science-gifted and teachers of general students. The subjects were 45 teachers of science-gifted and 45 teachers of general students. The major results of this study were as follows: First, there was no differences on the science philosophical views between teachers of science-gifted and teachers of general students by chi-square tests (p<.05). Second, there were no differences on how task assignments, how to guide exploration data, and how to write reports between teachers of science-gifted and teachers of general students (p<.05). But there was meaningful differences on how to proceed with exploration activities between teachers of science-gifted and teachers of general students (p<.05). It is implied that this the results of this investigation will help the focus of future efforts to promote more adequate the science philosophical views and instruction strategies for open-inquiry in teachers of science-gifted.

Analysis of Characteristics of Gifted Students in the Science Gifted Activity using Rainbow (무지개를 활용한 과학영재활동에 나타난 과학영재의 특징 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of science gifted students who participated in science gifted activity using rainbow. For this purpose, the science gifted activity using rainbow was developed and applied to 23 seventh grade science gifted students. The results indicated that gifted students had various concepts and ideas of optics. For example, some gifted students thought that there was rainbowshaped light at the place of rainbow, and another considered the process of dispersion of light in a waterdrop would be same as the process of the dispersion in the prism. Also, various rainbow theories and scientific imagination of gifted students were found. For devising new rainbow, gifted students used two strategies, 'changing the features' and 'changing conditions'. In addition, we discussed effective methods of applying this activity and implications to science gifted education.

Comparison of Career Awareness, the Preference for Science and Stereotypic Image of the Scientist Between the Gifted Students and Non-gifted Students in Elementary School (초등 영재학생과 일반학생의 진로인식, 과학 선호도 및 과학자의 정형화된 이미지 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the career awareness, the preference for science and stereotypic image of the scientist between the gifted students and non-gifted students in elementary school. For this study, 52 gifted students and 80 non-gifted students were participated. The results were as follows: First, the career awareness of gifted students was significantly higher than that of non-gifted students. Second, the preference for science of gifted students was significantly higher in all sub-domains than non-gifted students. There was a significant interaction effect between group and gender in the scientific interest and the intention of solving problems. Third, analyzing stereotypic image test for scientist between the gifted students and non-gifted students, it proved that non-gifted students had more stereotypic image comparing with the gifted students. Forth, carrying out the correlation analysis on the career awareness and the preference for science, the career awareness and the stereotypic image of the scientist, it proved that there were significant correlations with each other. It revealed that the career awareness affected the preference for science significantly through multiple regression analysis.

A Comparison Analysis of Intellectual Characteristics Between Science-Gifted Education Students and General Students (초등과학 영재학급 학생들과 일반 학생의 인지적 특성 비교 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze intellectual characteristics of elementary students in science-gifted education. For this, 72 science-gifted students were selected. Multiple intelligences, creativity, and the science process skills of these students were tested. To compare these traits with those of general students, 78 general students were also tested. The results of this study indicated that science-gifted students significantly surpassed general students in the areas of logical-mathematics, intra-person, and naturalist. Especially, the intelligences of logical-mathematics and intra-person were strong point of the science-gifted students. But music intelligence among the 8 intelligence was weak point. Creativity and the science process skills of the students in science-gifted education excelled those of general students. Therefore, to enhance the efficiency of the science-gifted education program in elementary school, it is necessary to consider the intellectual characteristics of the students.

The Analysis of Teacher Recommendation on Selection Process for Scientifically Gifted Program: Focus on the Scientific Attitude, Process Skill, Logical Thinking, Creative Problem-Solving Ability and Creativity of students (과학 영재교육 대상자 선발방법으로써 교사 추천제 분석: 학생의 과학적 태도, 탐구력, 사고력, 문제 해결력, 창의성을 중심으로)

  • We objectively analysis of teacher recommendation on selection process for scientifically gifted program, by having conducted the test of scientific attitude, process skill, logical thinking, creative problem-solving ability and creativity of the students who were enrolled in science gifted-education programs, students who were recommended by science teachers as talented in science and students of ordinary classes. In result, both gifted program students and teacher-recommended students scored much higher than ordinary class students in all test fields, but there was no meaningful difference between the gifted-program students and teacher-recommended students. This result signifies that teacher recommendation is a valuable tool for selecting students for a science gifted-education program.

Obstructions of Using Educational Technology in Gifted Students' Schools In Jeddah: Learners' Voices

  • This study touched on the limitations of educational technologies in gifted students' schools depending on the learners' viewpoints. The descriptive approach was used, and the tool was represented in a questionnaire distributed to a sample of 196 gifted secondary school students in Jeddah. Results showed moderate obstacles to educational technologies in gifted students' schools. The general mean of the responses of the study sample was 2.76. based on the findings, the author suggested some recommendations to reduce the difficulties that gifted students face in using educational technologies, as well as provide gifted students with electronic applications in order to their development, and especially the development of school buildings for gifted students with modern devices to help them facilitate the use of technology.

  • The creative thinking and emotional trainings are very important educational issues in the knowledge-information-based future society. Recently STEAM education is suggested as one of the educational solutions to prepare the future society. The aims of this study are to develop STEAM teaching-learning program and analyze its effects on the creativity and emotional intelligence of science-gifted and general students in elementary school. Four different subject matters based on the 2007-revised curriculum were selected to construct the brain-based STEAM teaching-learning program consisting of 12 class hours. The program was applied to 50 elementary general students and 19 science-gifted elementary students. The findings of this research are as follows. The brain-based STEAM programs is effective to improve the creativity and emotional intelligence of science-gifted and general elementary students after class. The creativity of two groups was not statistically different before the class. However after class, the creativity of gifted-science students is significantly higher than that of general students. The emotional intelligence of gifted-science students was higher than that of general students before the class. Therefore in oder to analyze the different effects of the program on two groups in emotional intelligence, the test results of both group of students were analyzed by ANCOVA after class. This analysis also showed that the program is more effective in gifted-science students to improve the emotional intelligence compared to general students.

Analysis of Trends in Science Gifted Education Using Topic Modeling (토픽 모델링을 활용한 과학영재교육 연구동향 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the trends of science gifted education-related research for the last 5 years using LDA topic modeling. To achieve the purpose of the study, 2,404 keywords of 292 domestic academic papers were analyzed using RISS, KISS, and DBpia. The main results were as follows. First, the number of researches in science gifted education has been decreasing since 2019. In the science gifted education research, the top 10 keywords were 'students', 'program', 'elementary school', 'class', 'creativity', 'gifted education', 'awareness', 'teacher', 'education', and 'activity'. Second, as a result of topic modeling analysis, 10 topics were derived. Research topics mainly conducted in science gifted education for the past five years are 'Affective characteristics of science gifted students', 'Characteristics of science gifted students in middle school', 'Development and application of science gifted education programs', 'Education programs of science gifted high school', 'Cognitive characteristics of science gifted students', 'Policy of science gifted education', 'Science gifted students and creativity', 'Research conducting education by science gifted students', 'Academic and career choice of science gifted students', 'Science concept of science gifted Students'. In the past, the proportion of specific topics was relatively high, but the proportion between topics does not differ significantly as 2019 approaches. Therefore, it can be confirmed that the more recent it comes, the more research is being conducted evenly without being biased toward one subject.

  • This stady was carried out to define Gifted student for science, model for selection, the tools and methods and related theory for the selection of the Gifted students for the science in primary school level. Also the developed tools and materials are applied to student and analysed the results to generalize the methods for the selection of Gifted students for science. The definition of Gifted students for science was carried out by the three-ring conception model by Renzulli(1982) and Lee long-Sung which defined the characteristics as three parts such as above average ability, creativity and tesk comitment. The Gifted students for science upper 2 percent which have three characteristics at the same times, namely overlapping three characteristics. The model for the selection of Gifted students consist of four step; such as screeing, selection,differentiation, judgement. The materials for the selection are input at each stage, analysed the results and standard for the selection are made. In the first stage screening, 202 students are selected from the 5060 of 4th and 5th graders according to their achievment, intellecture ability and observation of students activity. In second selection and third differentiation stage, 65 students are seletted according to their achievement In this study it is approved that the Gifted students in science have to be selection by various test such as achievement, intellectual ability, aptitude in science, inquiry activity, manual skill etc, rather rather then simple test such as achievement and intellecture ability. Also it is important to select upper 2 percent who have general abilites overlapping three characteristics mentioned in definition of Gifted students in science and selections model

The Effect of Science Journal Writings on the cognitive and affective features of the science gifted students (과학일지 쓰기가 과학영재의 인지적 ${\cdot}$ 정의적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of science journal writings on the cognitive and affective features of the science gifted students. In this research, the tasks of on-line science journal writings were assigned for 6 months and the subjects in this study were 21 students of Chemistry Division of the Center for Science Gifted Education, Seoul National University. Consequently in science journals, science concepts are found in various aspects according to the writing formats, and psychological and behavioral characteristics of the science-gifted are revealed in positive or negative aspects. In cognitive prospect, science journal writing equips students with better understanding about science concepts and scientific research. In affective prospect, science journal writing help students improve observation and attitude toward science as wren as writing skills. Accordingly, science journal writing has positive effect on cognitive and affective characteristics of the science-gifted. In conclusion, acknowledged by most of science-gifted students as both beneficial and appropriate in their education program, science journal writing should be emphasized in education for science-gifted students.
