  • In order to produce information the author usually reference other authors' work. A citation index leads users to papers by citations. Citations lead the user to desired information. In this paper, KSCI(Korea Science Citation Index) which defines the relationships between citing documents and cited documents has been constructed. KSCI System is to solve problems for recursive retrieval in ISI's SCI(Science Citation Index) Path Encoding Indexing technique was used to solve the problems. From the analysis of data, this system has efficiency about 8.98% in the aspect of data storage. In the aspect of retrieval, there was efficiency between citing documents and cited documents, especially there was over 40% of efficiency in the retrieval of cited documents. It is concluded that suggested KSCI system will provide efficient storage and retrieval system.

  • It is important for scientific and technological papers to build citation DB and to offer service. The best example of citation DB is SCI that has been utilized in the world. The majority of Korean journals is not SCI journal, so it is impossible for the domestic journals to conduct quantitative analysis and performance evaluation. Korea Science Citation Index Service is the alternative service to get rid of the above problem. In the study, we carried out the user satisfaction survey for new vision of service from existing KSCI, correcting the result data. We evaluated the data and then derived the level of current system and the future improvement direction.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the selection mechanism of the Science Citation Index(SCI) in domestic journals. Analysis has been carried out specially on the \"Journal of the Korean Nuclear Society\", which is a leading journal in the nuclear field in Korea. It is published in English and meets the basic standards of technical journal, however, does not meet the SCI selection criteria in many aspects. Major problems are; 1) Small number of research institutes and universities submit articles to the journal. 2) The impact factor is 0.097, far less than 0.764, the average value of SCI, and the rate of self-citation approaches only to 50%. 3) The journal is not distributed to the libraries in universities and research institutes that have nuclear engineering programs in foreign countries. 4) It does not have editor from international communities, only domestic editors serve for the journal. The study made recommendations for ways to be selected by SCI and utilization of this study for selection criteria of SCI.

  • A questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the use of SCI and awareness of SCI source journals by fatuity members at Korean medical colleges. 104 out of 180 faculty members randomly chosen from four prestigious medical colleges returned the questionnaires malled to them. Korean medical researchers rarely used SCI as their main source of research Information. They rather used the MEDLINE to seek the research information probably because they are easily available from their local libraries. Furthermore. many respondents mistakenly Identified 'SCI journals ranked by Impact factor' lists found In Journal Citation Reports (JCR) with the SCI Itself. That Is. In Korean medical research community. the virtue of SCI Is not as an Index but as a source of SCI Journal Impact factor Information. It Is because the Interest in impact factor Is highly associated with the pressure to publish In one of those SCI source Journals. The collected data shows that even the medical professors at these prestigious medical colleges suffer from the lack of knowledge and information about SCI. SCI source journals and their Impact factors. Nontheless, core journal titles of a medical specialty selected by Korean medical professors are mostly high-Impact Journals of Its field (1.e.. belong to the upper 1/3) zone ranked by Impact factor). Within each specialty. the Journal ranks assigned to the selected core Journals by the respondents agree with the ranks by SCI Impact factor to a great extent. That Is. the Korean medical scientists awareness on SCI Journals as defined in this study is in good standing. Therefore. a policy of a medical college to require medical professors to publish In SCI Journals to be promoted or a policy to evaluate a researcher's work by the fact that his research papers are published In SCI Journals can be positively pursued.

  • Objective: This study evaluated and compared the adherence to the CONSORT for quality of reports on the randomized controlled trials (RCT) abstracts by four major Korean Science Citation Index (SCI) journals and The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). Methods: A descriptive analysis of published RCT abstracts in Korean SCI journals and NEJM from 2007/01 to 2011/06 was conducted by two reviewers, independently extracting data from a PubMed search. A modification of CONSORT for abstract was used including 16 checklist items. Reporting of checklist items for individual group was conducted to compare adherence patterns between two groups. Results: We identified the potential 57 RCT abstracts from Korean SCI and 50 from NEJM meeting our inclusion criteria; among them, three abstracts from Korean SCI and one from NEJM were excluded. Among total 16 checklist items based on CONSORT statement, Korean SCI journals and NEJM were statistically equivalent in 4 items; Korean journals were better in three items and NEJM were in nine. The methodological quality domains were inadequately reported in both journals: allocation concealment about 1.9% and 4.0%, and blinding 44.4% and 40.8%. In general, The CONSORT adherence of NEJM was better than that of Korean SCI in the method and result domain (p < 0.0001). Conclusions: The quality of NEJM reporting of RCT abstracts was better than that of Korean SCI, in general. This study on adherence of RCT reports from Korean SCI journals and NEJM abstracts to the CONSORT statement reveals that there is a need for improvement, especially Korean SCI. Further investigation on the quality of RCT reports and ways to improve reporting quality is required.

  • Methodology Science Citation Index, developed by TS, has been used as an indicator to evaluate academic and research performance in worldwide research environment, as the world goes. With this trend, Korean Science Citation Index(KSCI) databases for domestic journals in the field of science and engineering have been constructed by some institutes such as KISTI, KRF, KOSEF, and so on. Many institutes in Korea are accepting the Impact Factor(IF) and SCI databases, proposed by TS as toolkits for evaluating research capability of their members without any criticism. However, the IF, mostly used as an analyzing tool, has been criticized by many different sectors. The validity of IF has been examined and/or complimented by a case study. In this study various indices as substitutes for IF are scrutinized and examined to maximize the usability of KSCI database.

  • The Annual Editions of SCI(Science Citation Index) CD-ROM over the last five years ('92-'96) were studied to investigate: 1) the status of domestic research activity in science & technology, in comparison with other countries, 2) research activity by universities and research institutes in Korea. Because the selection of journals in SCI is based on the criteria of citation sources, the journals registered in SCI are recognized as the Core Journals in each area of research. Therefore, the analysis result of SCI data is a quite reliable measurement to evaluate the research activities in science and technology. In 1996 a total of 6, 227 papers were listed on SCI, ranking the 21st up from the 29th in 1992. Over the last five years, the number had grown rapidly at an average of 29% per annum. This fast growth is expected to continue in the future.
