  • This study was carried out to discuss how soils in the area planned for a forest road construction can be mechanically tested and practically applied. For this, 16 soil test samples from 8 plots(2 samples per plot) were used. The major tests are focused on unit weight before and after cut, water content, liquid and plastic limits, sieve and hydrometer analysis etc. The total unit weight(${\rho}_t$) before and after cut are $1.69g/cm^3$ and $1.19g/cm^3$, respectively. Their water contents are 21.0% and 20.5%. The coefficient of uniformity U and coefficient of curvature C obtained from sieve and hydrometer analysis are 125 and 0.42, which mean generally not well graded. On the soil classification by USCS, SM(silty sand or silt-sand mixed soil)is a Key soil, but it seems to be not good for fill material. From the standard proctor test are resulted $1.40{\pm}0.065g/cm^3$ for the unit weight(${\rho}$) in the nature and $1.88{\pm}0.049g/cm^3$ for the optimum proctor unit weight(${\rho}pr$) each. With this to say, it is necessary more powerful compaction work at earth filling, with which this soil reachs enough the ${\rho}pr$, and more earth.

  • River sand has generally used for the backfill material of underground power cables. The thermal resistivity of it has $150^{\circ}C$-cm/Watt in wet condition and more than double in dry condition. The final goal of this study is to find the backfill material which has a small change in thermal resistivity with various water contents, for example thermal resistivity is $50^{\circ}C$-cm/Watt and $100^{\circ}C$-cm/Watt in wet and dry conditions respectively. In this study it is presented that the comparison of thermal resistivity using stone powder, crush rock, weathered granite soil and Jumunjin sand as well as river sand in the needle method regarding water content, dry unit weight and particle size distribution. As a result, the thermal resistivity of a material is minimized when they have maximum dry unit weight at optimum moisture content and maximum density by appropriately mixing materials for particle size distribution. Therefore thermal resistivity characteristics should be considered two factors: one is the difference between natural dry condition and dry state after optimum moisture content, and the other is the difference between unit weight of raw material and maximum dry density.

  • This is an experimental study to raise higher efficiency of filteration than conve ntional filteration by increasing of filteration capacity for per unit area and by extending of filteration lasting time with biflow filter system which was improved from the conventional rapid sand filteration method in the process of water purification treatment. In order to raise more efficient function of filteration and giving consideration to the filter layer at upper and lower parts of the filter, the fine sand & an thracite were used as a filter medium. Although there is some difficulty than previous fine sand in procurement, it could confirm that such filter medium (fine sand & anthracite) was more effective in the field of load, lasting time and back wash, etc. In consideration of practical effect of filteration. The raw water which was used for this experimental study was not coagulated. As a result of this experiment, the filteration volume could increase more than 2 times than that of conventional method. Besides, much more advantages could be obtained for instance, the requirement of installation area was not much and installation cost could economize. On the other hand, the following results were found. The quality of filtered water became worse as time goes by and the turbidity of filtered water was more influenced by raw water turbidity than by rate of filteration. Lasting time of filteration on change of filteration rate in the filter layer reached 2 times in comparison with previous filter basin, and until loss gead reached to 1.0 meter and 1.5 meter, the following relate formulas between lasting time and rate of filteration were formed. ($T_{1.5}=181.96V^{-0.46},\;T_{1.0}=121.31V^{-0.46}$) Even though the lasting time can be shorten in case of the increase of the filteration rate, but the lasting time was prolonged more than 2 times than of previous method. With taking aim at contribution to the development of water treatment technique, we are planning to study continuously for the future study basing on the results in this papers.

  • Sand compaction pile (SCP) is one of the ground improvement techniques which are being used for not only accelerating consolidation but also increasing bearing capacity of loose sands or soft clay grounds. In this study, laboratory model tests and 3-D finite element analyses were performed to investigate the interaction between sand compaction piles and surrounding soft soils. Based on the results obtained, as the area replacement ratio increases, the stress concentration ratio increases at the pile point, the settlement decreases, and the relative displacement between column and soil also decreases. It is also found that numerical study is illustrated by good comparison with model test results, and the numerical analysis revealed slip effects which could not be specifically identified in the model tests.

  • This study investigated the best condition when mixed sand with a river and crushed sand was used though the experiment for the properties of the concrete corresponding to the control of fine aggregate ratio to apply the mixed sand and properties of the fine aggregate at the ready-mixed concrete factory on Yeongnam and Honam. The physical properties of Yeongnam and Honam is satisfied with KS F 2526 and KS F 2527 except fineness modulus and passing amount of 8mm sieve. And, the mixed sand above two types which were incongruent to use individually was being used at each factory, and it was managed in accordance with KS. The flowabillity of the mixture proportion of concrete which was estimated by method of unit volume weight according to the fine aggregate ratio at each factory on Yeongnam and Honam was higher than existing mixture proportion. It was analyzed that the residual water due to decline of the surface area caused by reducing fine aggregate ratio was increased relatively. Accordingly, it was considered that the effect on the economic mixture proportion and improvement of durability might be possible.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the spatiotemporal and kinematic gait parameters and muscle activity of the lower extremities between forward walking on sand (FWS) and backward walking on sand (BWS) in normal adults. Methods: This study was conducted on 13 healthy adults. Subjects performed FWS and BWS and the spatiotemporal and kinematic gait parameters of stride time, stride length, velocity, cadence, step length, stance, swing, double support, and hip range of motion (ROM), knee ROM were measured by a wearable inertial measurement unit system. In addition, the muscle activity of the rectus femoris (RF), biceps femoris (BF), tibialis anterior (TA), and gastrocnemius (GA) was measured. Results: The stride length, stride velocity, cadence, and step length in the BWS were significantly lower than FWS (p<0.05), and stride time was significantly greater (p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the ratio of stance, swing, and double support between the two (p>0.05). The kinematic gait parameters, including hip and knee joint range of motion in BWS, were significantly lower than FWS (p<0.05). The muscle activity of the RF in BWS was significantly higher than FWS (p<0.05), but the muscle activity of the BF, TA, GA did not show any significant differences between the two movements (p>0.05). Conclusion: A strategy to increase stability by changing the gait parameters is used in BWS, and this study confirmed that BWS was a safe and effective movement to increase RF muscle activity without straining the joints. Therefore, BWS can be recommended for effective activation of the RF.

  • Coulomb's theory has traditionally been used for the estimation of active earth pressure acting on rigid walls. However, many experimental data show that active earth pressures on rough, rigid walls are nonlinearly distributed. This is due to the arching effects produced by friction between the wall and backfill materials when the wall translates away from the backfill. Although there are analyses that take arching into consideration f3r a horizontal backfill surface and a vertical rigid wall, these analyses were derived for homogeneous backfill. Therefore, it is not possible to use these analyses for a caisson backfilled with crushed rock and sand, a common type of rigid wall for harbor structures. In this study, a new formulation for calculation of the nonlinear active earth pressure acting on a caisson backfilled with crushed rock and sand is proposed considering both internal friction angles and unit weights of the crushed rock and sand.

  • The mechanical characteristics of frozen sand greatly depend on the frozen temperature and the fine contents according to the previous study by Chae et al. (2015). There are two hypotheses to explain this experimental results; one is the unfrozen water contents greatly affected by the fine contents and frozen temperature and the other is the sand particle spacing greatly affected by the pore-ice. To evaluate the latter hypothesis, the micro X-ray CT scan was performed. The micro X-ray CT scanning, one of the actively performed interdisciplinary research area, has a high resolution with micrometer unit allows to investigate internal structure of soils. In this study, X-ray CT technique was applied to investigate the effect of the frozen temperature and fine contents on the sand particle minimum and average spacing with the developed image processing techniques. Based on the spacing analysis, the frozen temperature and fine contents have little influence on the sand particle spacing in the frozen sand specimens.
