The lattice dynamics of Cr, Mo, and W are formulated in terms of a simple shell model in which the transition metal ions in the crystals are treated as deformable ions. The model involves a total of seven parameters; two charge parameters and five force constant parameters. The numerical values of the model parameters are determined by fitting to three elastic constants and the lattice vibrational frequencies measured by the neutron inelastic scattering experiments. Attempts are made to compute the phonon dispersion relations, the frequency distribution functions, and the lattice specific heats of three metals. The results are compared with experiments. It is found that the simple shell model can give a satisfactory account for the lattice vibrational characteristics of transition metals. The usefulness of the model is then discussed in comparison With other lattice dynamical models.

An enhanced degenerated shell finite element (FE), which has been developed for inelastic analysis of reinforced concrete structures is described in this paper. Generally, Reissner-Mindlin (RM) assumptions are adopted to develop the degenerated shell FE so that transverse shear deformation effects is considered. However, it is found that there are serious defects such as locking phenomena in RM degenerated shell FE since the stiffness matrix has been overestimated in some situations. As remedies of locking phenomena, reduced integration, incompatible mode and assumed strain method have been used. Especially, the assumed strain method has been successfully used in many FEs. But contrarily, there is a few investigation on the performance of the assumed strains in the inelastic analysis of concrete structures. Therefore, shell formulation is provided in this paper with emphasis on the terms related to the stiffness matrix based on assumed strain method and microscopic concrete material model. Finally, the performance of the present shell element is tested and demonstrated with several numerical examples. From the numerical tests, the present result shows a good agreement with experimental data or other numerical results.
A very large shell-structure built in shipyards like ship hulls or offshore structures are joined by welding through full process. As the welding contains a high thermal cycle at a local area, the welded structures should be distorted unavoidably. Because a distorted ship block should be revised to the designed value before the next stage, the ability to predict and to control the weld distortion is an accuracy level of the yard itself. Despite the ship block size, several present thermal distortion methodologies can deal those sizes, but it is a different story to deal full ship size model. Even a fully constructed ship hull not remaining any welding can have an accuracy issue like outfitting installation problems. Any present thermal distortion methodology cannot accept this size for its recommended element size and the number. The ordinary welding breadth at erection stage is about 20~40 mm. It can hardly be a good choice to make finite element model of these sizes considering human effort and computational environment. The finite element model for structure analysis of a ship hull is prepared at front-end engineering design stage which is the first process of the project. The element size of the model is as fine as the longitudinal space, and it is not proper to obtain a weld distortion at the erection stage. In this study, a methodology is suggested that a weldment can be shrunk at original place instead of using structural finite element model. We cut the original shell elements at erection weld-line and put truss elements between the edges of cut elements for weld shrinkage. Additional truss elements are used to facsimile transverse weld shrinkage which cannot be from the weld-line truss element shrink. They attach to weld-line truss element like twigs from barks. The capacity of developed elements is verified through an accuracy check of erection process of a container vessel at the apt. hull. It can be a useful tool for verifying a centering accuracy after renew and for block-separating planning considering accuracy.

The widespread use of thin shell structures has created a need for a systematic method of analysis which can adequately account for arbitrary geometric form and boundary conditions as well as arbitrary general type of loading. Therefore, the stress and analysis of thin shell has been one of the more challenging areas of structural mechanics. A wide variety of numerical methods have been applied to the governing differential equations for spherical and cylindrical structures with a few results applicable to practice. The analysis of axisymmetric spherical shell is almost an every day occurrence in many industrial applications. A reliable and accurate finite element analysis procedure for such structures was needed. Dynamic loading of structures often causes excursions of stresses well into the inelastic range and the influence of geometry changes on the response is also significant in many cases. Therefore both material and geometric nonlinear effects should be considered. In general, the shell structures designed according to quasi-static analysis may fail under conditions of dynamic loading. For a more realistic prediction on the load carrying capacity of these shell, in addition to the dynamic effect, consideration should also include other factors such as nonlinearities in both material and geometry since these factors, in different manner, may also affect the magnitude of this capacity. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the dynamic characteristics of spherical shell. For these purposes, the spherical shell subjected to uniformly distributed step load was analyzed for its large displacements elasto-viscoplastic static and dynamic response. Geometrically nonlinear behaviour is taken into account using a Total Lagrangian formulation and the material behaviour is assumed to elasto-viscoplastic model highly corresponding to the real behaviour of the material. The results for the dynamic characteristics of spherical shell in the cases under various conditions of base-radius/central height(a/H) and thickness/shell radius(t/R) were summarized as follows : The dynamic characteristics with a/H. 1) AS the a/H increases, the amplitude of displacement in creased. 2) The values of displacement dynamic magnification factor (DMF) were ranges from 2.9 to 6.3 in the crown of shell and the values of factor in the mid-point of shell were ranged from 1.8 to 2.6. 3) As the a/H increases, the values of DMF in the crown of shell is decreased rapidly but the values of DMF in mid-point shell is increased gradually. 4) The values of DMF of hoop-stresses were range from 3.6 to 6.8 in the crown of shell and the values of factor in the mid-point of shell were ranged from 2.3 to 2.6, and the values of DMF of stress were larger than that of displacement. The dynamic characteristics with t/R. 5) With the thickness of shell decreases, the amplitude of the displacement and the period increased. 6) The values of DMF of the displacement were ranged from 2.8 to 3.6 in the crown of shell and the values of factor in the mid-point of shell were ranged from 2.1 to 2.2.

Film forming behavior of monodispersed model composite latexes with particle size of 190 nm, which consist of n-butyl acrylate as a soft phase monomer and methyl methacrylate as a hard phase monomer with different morphology was examined. Five different types of model latexes were used in this study such as random copolymer particle, soft-core/hard-shell particle, hard-core/soft-shell particle, gradient type particle, and mixed type particle. The film forming behavior was evaluated using pseudo on-line measurements of the cumulative weight loss, the UV transmittance, and the tensile fracture energy. Each stages of film formation I, II were not sensitive to the morphology of model latexes, but stage-ill was largely dependent on the morphology of model latexes. The chain mobility of polymer which composed the shell component was found to dominantly determine the behavior of film forming stage-III.

In this work, a finite element model is presented for geometrically non-linear analysis of shell structures. Finite element by using a three-node flat triangular shell element is formulated. The non-linear incremental equilibrium equations are formulated by using an updated Lagrangian formulation and the solutions are obtained with the incremental/iterative Newton-Raphson method and arc length method. Some of results are presented for shell structures. The obtained results are in good agreement with the results available in existing literature.

Helical gear excitation is transmitted to a gearbox through the shafts and bearings and the vibration of the gearbox radiates the noise in the air. Therefore gearbox modeling is essential to evaluate the gear noise. This work deals with vibration and acoustic analysis of a cylindrical shell-type gearbox with/without holes excited by helical gears and focuses on the development of the simple gearbox model. To do so, helical gears and bearing forces are calculated. Gearbox with/without holes is modeled by the aluminum end plates and PMMA cylindrical shell body. The vibration mode and the forced harmonic response were calculated by the commercial FE software and the end plate of the gearbox is more contributed to vibration than the body. Acoustic analysis was also conducted by the commercial acoustic software and a cylindrical shell type gearbox with/without holes has the similar vibro-acoustic characteristics.

The Rayleigh-Ritz method is used to investigate the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the ring stiffened cylindrical shells with a rectangular cutout. The cutout is located on the center of the shell. The Love's thin shell theory combined with the discrete stiffener theory is adopted to formulate the analytical model of the shell. The effect of stiffener eccentricity, number, and position on vibration characteristics of the shell is examined. Also the effect of cutout size is examined. By comparison with previously published analytical and new FEM results, it is shown that natural frequencies and mode shapes can be determined with adequate accuracy.

This study on the elasto-plastic analysis of spherical shell by rigia element method is classified into two parts : (1) theoretical consideration on elasto-plastic analysis of spherical shell, (2) elastic and elasto-plastic analysis of spherical shell with the open stiff ring. In 1982, Y. Tsuboi proposed the new analytical method which is called the rigid element method, for analyzing the elasto-plastic behavior of wall-type precast concrete structures by applying the concepts of rigid bodies-sprins model (i.e., when structures reach their ultimate state of leading, they may be yield, collapsed ana crushed into pieces, and each part or piece of structures mar move like a rigid body.). In this paper, for improvement and expansion this rigid element method, it is proposed the adaptation equation of rectangular-shaped spherical element and rectangular-shaped spherical bending element developed by present authors, and the analytical procedure for the elastic and the elasto-plastic increment method of structures.

This is analyzed using the finite element method which is appling excellent isoparametric curve element in the aspect of large usages of dynamic responses in which is regarding geometric and material nonlinear of a large scale shell structure of an airplane, a submarine, a ship, and an ocean structure. The solution of dynamic equations is got by direct integration method using time-stepping procedure and regarding Central Difference Method of the both solutions. But because formal matrix factorization is not necessary in each time step and it does not take less time to compute relatively, this method must be regarded very few time steps on the condition. Axisymmatric shell problems are inspected using 8 node Isoparametric element in this paper. Partial axisymmatric spherical shell is used as a model to analyze axisymmatric nonlinear dynamic behavior regarding. Total Lagrangian formulation in geometric nonlinear behavior and elastio-viscoplastic in material nonlinear behavior.
