  • This study was performed to compare the efficacy of the sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC), oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC), and their combination with vitamin E for the prevention of postoperative adhesions in the dog. Twenty five dogs were randomly divided into five groups ; non-treated group (Control Group), SCMC-treated group (SCMC Group), ORC-treated group (ORC Group), vitamin E and SCMC-treated group (SCMC + E Group), and vitamin E and ORC-treated group (ORC + E group). After laparotomy, 5 abrasions were made to induce intraperitoneal adhesions on the surface of the ileal serosa. The adhesions were occurred in serosa to mesentary (37.6%), serosa to serosa (24%), serosa to omentum (8.8%) and serosa to parietal peritoneum (3.2%). The incidences of adhesions were 92%, 84%, 64%, 56% and 68% in Control, SCMC, ORC, SCMC+E and ORC + E Group, respectively. The adhesion scores in SCMC+E Group were significantly lower than those in the other groups (p < 0.01). In conclusion, this study showed that oral supplements of vitamin E and intraperitoneal administration of 2% SCMC solution were effective on reducing intraperitoneal adhesions in the dog.

  • This study was carried out to compare the efficacy of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (SCMC) with the combination of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) and SCMC for the prevention of postoperative adhesions in the dog. After laparotomy, abrasions were made on the surface of ileal serosa in 17 dogs. The animals were randomly divided into the control group (N = 5) which received no treatment, the SCMC-treated group (N = 6), and the SCMC & LMWH-treated group (N = 6). Hematologic values were monitored before laparotomy and 1, 4, 7, 10 and 14 days after laparotomy. The location and score of adhesion were assessed at second laparotomy 3 weeks later, Although the mean adhesion score both in the SCMC-treated group (7.17${\pm}$1.17) and in the SCMC & LMWH-treated group (4.50${\pm}$1.38) was found to be significantly lower than that in the control group (9.40${\pm}$0.89) (p<0.01 and p<0.01, respectively), more favorable adhesion prevention was achieved in the SCMC & LMWH-treated group in comparison with the SCMC-treated group without any hemor-rhagic complications (p<0.01). This study could conclude that SCMC & LMWH are highly effective in prevention against postoperative adhesion in the dog.

  • This study has been conducted to compare the efficacy of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC) and hyaluronic acid (HA) on prevention of adhesion after artificial wound was induced in intestine. 1 % SCMC and 0.3% HA solution and saline solution were respectively administered to abdominal cavity. Each of the three groups consists of 11 rats. The abdominal cavity of each rat was coated with 2 ml of the allocated solution just after the abdomen was cut open, and it was coated with each solution of 1 ml before abrasion were caused on the cecum, the ascending colon and the transverse colon. Then, an additional 1 ml solution was injected before the abdomen was closed. On day 14 after the operation, each adhesion formation was evaluated at the score of 0-4. The HA group and SCMC group showed significantly lower adhesion scores than control group in all regions(P< 0.05). The adhesion scores of ascending colon, transverse colon and no abrasion region of the viscera showed little difference between HA group and SCMC group(P< 0.05), but the effect of adhesion reduction showed higher tendency in the HA group than the SCMC. The adhesion score of the cecum was significantly lower in HA group than SCMC group(P< 0.05). In conclusion, the SCMC solution and HA solution were effective on prevention of abdominal adhesion resulting from the celiotomy. Among of them, the HA solution could be more effective on prevention of adhesion than SCMC solution.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC) for the prevention of postoperative uterus and ovary adhesion formation in the Korean black goats. Twenty adult female Korean black goats randomly were divided into five groups with four animals in each group. After the routine laparotomy, catheter for injection was inserted into the abdomen. Before abdominal closure, saline, 1% SCMC, 2% SCMC or 0.4% HA solution (50ml/10kg of body weight/head) were injected in the abdominal cavity in each group. Three weeks after surgery, second laparotomy was performed and the adhesions were scored on a scale of 0 to 10 according to their vascularity and adhesion size in uterus and ovary. This trial was repeated the four times with the interval of three weeks. In the first and second trial, the group treated with 2% SCMC significantly reduced the adhesion formation than other treatment groups (P<0.05). In the third trial, the adhesion formation was significantly reduced in 2% SCMC and 1% SCMC (P<0.05). In the fourth trial, 2% SCMC reduced the adhesion formation. However, there was no significant difference among other groups. This study showed that the 2% SCMC administered at the end of the surgery reduced the adhesion formation in the Korean black goats.

  • The aim of this study is to evaluate a efficient w/v% barium suspension and w/v% sodium carboxy methyl cellulose (SCMC) for small bowel examination. Between november 2001 and june 2002, 370 patients were examined small bowel examination with oral administration of barium suspension mixed with SCMC. we classified into six groups including A(fine type 40% $BaSO_4$ mixed 0.5% SCMC and 600 ml 0.5% SCMC administration), B(fine type 30% $BaSO_4$ mixed 0.5% SCMC), C(fine type 20% $BaSO_4$ mixed 0.5% SCMC), D(fine type 25% $BaSO_4$ mixed 0.5% SCMC), E(D mixed coarse type 25% $BaSO_4$ mixed 0.5% SCMC), F(D mixed coarse type 25% $BaSO_4$ mixed 0.75% SCMC). We measured transparency rate of contrast media transit time, administration dose, viscosity and particle size. The transparency rate was higher then 80 kV and 90 kV in 100 kV in the same 20 mAs condition. Transit time was the fastest in A group(mean trans time 56 minutes) and the slowest in E group(mean 100 minutes), Administration dose was the smallest in A group(mean dose 541 ml and the most in E group(mean 1,100 ml), viscosity was the lowest in E(125.1 mpa/s) and the highest in A(375.5 mpa/s), and particle size was $1.0\;{\mu}m$ in A, B, C, and D group, $0.6\;{\mu}m,\;1.0\;{\mu}m,\;10.0\;{\mu}m$ in E, F group. In conclusion, we propose that the efficient condition for small examination is high voltage technique, high density $BaSO_4$, and 0.625% w/v SCMC.

  • The effectiveness of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC) and deztran in the prevention of adhesion formation on the uterus and embryo collection in rabbits was elucidated. Following induction of adhesion on uterus and uterine horns by abrasion and retrograde flushing of embryos in gonadotropins primed rabbits, the solutions of saline (for control), 1% SCMC, 10% dextran and a synthetic solution of 1% SCNC and 10% dextran in saline were infused in the abdominal cavity at the dose of 5 ml/kg of body weight. The average percentage of adhesion was 11.1, 28.6, 41.7 and 73.3% in the rabbits infused with the synthetic, 1% SCMC, 10% dextran and saline solutions, respectively. The synthetic solution was more effective than other solutions in the rabbits. The average number and recovery rate of embryos were significantly (P<0.01) higher in the synthetic solution group than 1% SCMC, 10% dextran or saline solution groups. Among the collected embryos in the groups, the distribution of the normal embryos was higher in the synthetic solution group (99%) and the 10% dextran solution group (95.7%) than the 1% SCMC solution group (78.4%) and saline (66.2%). Theretore, a synthetic solution which is combined with 1% SCMC and 10% deztran in saline can be effectively used for the prevention of adhesion formation after uterine surgery and embryo collection.

  • Efficacy of a 1% solution of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC) infu7ed into the peritoneal cavity of dogs was evaluated for prevention of intraperitoneal adhesion, resulting from operations of the reproductive tract. Saline-treated deles (n = 5) were controls that underwent ventral midline celiotomy, and adhesions were cleated by incision and scraping about 5 cm segment of each uterine horn. Saline (7 ml/kg of body weight) was then infused into the peritoneal cavity. Others (n = 5) were treaded similarly to the saline-treated dogs. except that 1% SCMC :solution (7mH/kg of body weight) was infused into the peritoneal cavity. This group was studied to determine whether SCHC would prevent the adhesions in the peritoneal cavity, especially in the uterine horn model. Abdominal adhesions were evaluated and an adhesion severity score was assigned to each dog on the basis of severity of adhesions. At the time of necropsy. the mean adhesion score in the saline treated group was $2.65{\pm}0.22.$ In contrast, adhesion formation in the SCMC treated group was less ($mean score =1.70{\pm}0.26$). Statistic71 analysis was performed using the grouped t-test and paired t-test. A significanlty lower adhesion score was observed in dogs given SCMC than in the saline treated group (P<0.01). In summary, SCMC significantly reduced adhesion formation in the dog uterine horn model. The results of this study suggest that application of 1% SCMC solution, following various reproductive pelvic surgery, will present the adhesions.

  • This study was performed to determine the effectiveness of poloxamer/sodium alginate mixture(PX/SA) barriers on prevention of post-operative peritoneal adhesion in dogs. Fifteen mongrel dogs were divided into three experimental groups: non-treated group, 2% Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC) treated group and PX/SA treated group. In order to induce adhesions, the anti-mesenteric serosa of the ileum was exteriorized and then abraded in a standard manner by scraping with a scalpel blade to create homogeneous petechial hemorrhagic surface over a 1 ${\times}$ 1 cm area. Solution of SCMC was allowed to spread across the intraperitoneal organs through a catheter using a syringe. PX/SA was simply coated over the abraded tissues. On day before and day 1, 4, 7, and 14 after operation, venous blood specimens were collected for measurement of RBC, total WBC and fibrinogen. The adhesions were blindly assessed 3 weeks later by using a computerized tensiometer. The RBC, total WBC and fibrinogen values of three groups showed no statistical significances. The mean tensile strength(gram force, gf) of formed adhesions on day 21 after surgery was 173.05${\pm}$113.48 in the non-treated group, 111.42 ${\pm}$ 38.25 in the SCMC group, and 69.00 ${\pm}$ 45.07 in the PX/SA group. The tensile strength values for adhesion seperation in PX/SA group was lower than those in SCMC group(p < 0.05) and significantly lower than those in the non-treated group(p < 0.05). Our data suggested that PX/SA should be effective on reducing peritoneal adhesion formation in dogs compared with SCMC. PX/SA may be applicable to preventing post-operative intraperitoneal adhesion in dogs.

  • These studies performed to establish the diagnostic methods for the luminal adhesions to abdominal wall with radiography, ultrasonography and electromyography, and to evalute sodium carboxymethylcellulose(SCMC) for prevention of the abdominal adhesions in goats. The adhesion sites were not detected by rediography and ultrasonography at non-pneumoperitoneum, but detected after pneumoperitoneum in goats with experimentally induced ruminal abhesions to abdominal wall. Electromyography revealed only the presence of intraabdominal adhesions. In fibriongen values and total leucocytes, there were no alterations between SCMC treated and non-treated group. The average gross scores of adhesions in SCMC treated and non-treated were 0.3 and 2.7, respectively. It was concluded that radigraphy, electromyography and ultrasonography could be available for the diagnosis of the ruminal adhesions to abdominal wall and the use of SCMC was useful to prevent the intraabdominal adhesions in ruminants.
