  • A projected 100 kW APU gas turbine rotor-bearing system has a main outer shaft, which is composed of some numbers of segmented sections for manufacturing and assembly conveniences. For a secure assembly of the segmented sections a tie shaft or inner shaft is installed inside of the outer shaft and a tensional axial preload of 50,000 N is provided to it. In this paper it is intended to set-up a sound modeling method of the APU rotor system, and particularly, the influences of the tie shaft on the rotordynamic characteristics of the entire APU gas turbine rotor-bearing system are investigated. Analysis results show that as a conservative design practice the inner tie shaft should be actively modeled in the rotordynamic analysis of the APU rotor-bearing system, and its effects on the dynamic behaviors of the outer shaft should be thoroughly design-reviewed.

  • Large dynamic loads act on the rotor in rotary compressors. There are unbalance forces due to eccentric parts and gas forces induced by the pressure difference between compression and suction gases. Rotor-journal bearing system is nonlinear since the stiffness and damping coefficients of the lubricating oil film are not constant in the bearings. The system is considered as a coupled problem of flexible rotor and the journal bearings. Bearing reaction force is calculated from pressure of oil film using Reynolds equations in journal bearings. Pressure distribution in journal bearing is analyzed by finite difference method. The dynamic response of rotor and bearing characteristic are discussed when rotary compressor has a relative misalignment.

  • This paper presents design procedure of the magnetic bearings used for high-speed electric machines and flywheel energy storage systems. Magnetic bearing can be categorized by inner-rotor type and outer-rotor type according to the position of the rotary disc. These two types are applicable based on application environments such as application space, required attraction force, and controllability. Magnetic bearing is generally designed based on the ratio (geometrical coefficient or geometrical efficiency) of pole width to rotor journal radius but proper ratio is only decided by the analysis. This is the difficulty of the magnetic bearing design. In this paper, proper design technology of the inner-rotor type and outer-rotor-type eight pole magnetic bearings is introduced and compared with the FEM analysis results, which verifies the proposed design procedure is suitable to be applied to the design of the magnetic bearings for the industrial applications and flywheel energy storage system.

  • This research presents a nonlinear model to analyze the ball bearing nitration due to the waviness in a rigid rotor supported by multi-row ball bearings. The waviness of a ball and each races is modeled by the superposition of sinusoidal function, and the position vectors of inner and outer groove radius center are defined with respect to the mass center of the rotor in order to consider five degrees of freedom of a general rotor-bearing system. The waviness of a ball bearing is introduced to these position vectors to use the Hertzian contact theory in order to calculate the elastic deflection and nonlinear contact force resulting from the waviness while the rotor has translational and angular motion. They can be determined by solving the nonlinear equations of motion with five degrees of freedom by using the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg algorithm. Numerical results of this research are validated with those of prior researchers. The proposed model can calculate the translational displacement as well as the angular displacement of the rotor supported by the multi-row ball bearings with waviness. It also characterizes the nitration frequencies resulting from the various kinds of waviness in rolling elements, the harmonic frequencies resulting from the nonlinear load-deflection characteristics of ball bearing. and the sideband frequencies resulting from the waviness interaction.

  • This paper discusses the model validation and vibration suppression of an AMB flexible rotor via additional LQG controller. The main difficulty in the vibration suppression of the flexible rotor using AMB is to realize a controller that can minimize resonance without injuring the stabilized rigid modes. In order to solve this problem, simple scheme for system modeling and controller design are developed. Firstly, the AMB flexible rotor is stabilized with a PID controller, which leads to a new stable rotor-bearing system. Then, authors propose the model validation procedure using measured open-loop frequency responses to obtain an accurate model of the AMB flexible rotor system. After that, LQG controller with modal weighting is designed to suppress resonances of the stable rotor-bearing system. Due to the poor controllability and observability of flexible modes compared to rigid ones, balancing of two Gramians is prerequisite for the fair LQG controller design. Simulation with step disturbance and experimental results of unbalance response up to 10,000 rpm verified the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

  • Among other critical conditions in rotor systems the large non-linear vibration excited by bearing non-linearity causes the rotor failure. For reducing this catastrophic failure and predictive detection of this phenomenon the analysis of orthotropic bearing non-linearity in rotor system using higher order frequency response functions (HFRFs) is conducted and is shown to be theoretically feasible as that of non-rotating structures. The complex HFRFs based on the Volterra series are newly developed for the process and investigated their features by using the simple forms of the FRFs associated with the forward and the backward modes.

  • To predict the noise and vibration characteristics of induction motor system, it is necessary to develop the mathematical model including all the mechanical elements such as shaft, blower, rotor, fan, bearing, case and mounting parts. Coupling effect between case-mount system and rotor- shaft system including shaft, blower, rotor, fan and bearing is examined. Impact exciting experimentation was done in order to verify vibration model of the induction motor system. From experimental results, we can appreciate that the natural frequencies of induction motor system are in good agrements with analysis.

  • This paper presents the development of a collocated capacitance sensor and its application to the decentralized PID controller design for 4-axis magnetic bearing system. The main feature of the sensor is that it is made of a compact printed circuit board (PCB) so that it can be built in to the actuator coil of the magnetic bearing unit. The signal processing unit has been also developed. Then, decentralized PED controller is designed using simplified rotor system model. Finally, the experimental results on the performance of the collocated sensor based decentralized PID controller for a magnetic bearing rotor system is presented.

  • Rotating machinery often encounters excessive vibration due to various excitation sources. Among others, the synchronous excitation due to rotating unbalance and initial deformation is acknowledged to be one of the major sources of vibration in rotor-bearing systems. In this paper, a synchronous response analysis method in the presence of the initial deformation is proposed to investigate the peculiar effect of the initial deformation on the response of general flexible rotor-bearing systems with rotational speed dependency and the anisotropy. Experiments are performed and compared with computational results to verify the proposed analysis method. Two numerical examples are also provided to illustrate the characteristics of the synchronous response of general rotor-bearing systems due to the initial deformation.

  • In this study, three-dimensional rotordynamic analyses have been conducted using equivalent beam, hybrid and fun three-dimensional models. The Present computational method is based on the general finite element method with rotating gyroscopic effects of a rotor system. General purpose commercial finite element code, SAMCEF which includes practical rotordynamics module with various types of rotor analysis methods and bearing elements is applied. For the purpose of numerical verification, comparison study for a benchmark rotor model with support bearings is performed first. Detailed finite element models based on three different modeling concepts are constructed and then computational analyses are conducted for the realistic and complex three-dimensional rotor system. The results for rotor stability and mass unbalance response are presented and compared with the experimental vibration test conducted in this study.
