The methods of fitting a circle to measured data, geometric fit and algebraic fit, have been studied profoundly in various areas of science. However, they have not been applied exactly to a biomechanics discipline for locating the center of rotation of a human joint. The purpose of this study was to generalize the methods to fitting spheres to the points in 3-dimension, and to estimate the center of rotation of a hip joint by three of geometric fit methods(Levenberg-Marquardt, Landau, and Sp$\ddot{a}$th) and four of algebraic fit methods(Delogne-K${\aa}$sa, Pratt, Taubin, and Hyper). 1000 times of simulation experiments for flexion/extension and ad/abduction at an artificial hip joint with four levels of range of motion(10, 15, 30, and $60^{\circ}$) and three levels of angular velocity(30, 60, and $90^{\circ}$/s) were executed to analyze the responses of the estimated center of rotation. The results showed that the Sp$\ddot{a}$th estimate was very sensitive to the marker near the center of rotation. The bias of Delogne-K${\aa}$sa estimate existed in an even larger range of motion. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm of geometric fit and the Pratt of algebraic fit showed the best results. The combination of two methods, using the Pratt's estimate as initial values of the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm, could be a candidate of more valid estimator.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the projectile factors and biomechanical characteristics of men's hammer throwing during turning phases. Four national leveled athletes including Korea national record holder participated in this study. After full warm-up, each participant performed 6 trials of hammer throwing with their best. The best recorded trial was selected from each participant and they were analyzed for this study. Three-Dimensional motion analysis using a system of 5 video cameras at a sampling frequency 60Hz was performed for this study. As the number of turns increased, athletes revealed following characteristics. 1) The single and double support time decreased. 2) The rotation foot was closed to axis foot and it revealed greater medio-lateral displacement than that of horizontal one. 3) At the transition point from double support to single support, ball was in front of rotation foot so that not much angular velocity obtained. For the projectile factors, projectile angle did not show differences while projectile height and velocity revealed differences among the participants. It may indicated that each athlete has different fitness and skill level to resist centrifugal force which become larger as the number of turn increased.

The effect of a particle's spin is investigated numerically by taking into account the effect of lift forces originating due to difference between the rotations of a particle and of a fluid, such as the Saffman and Magnus lift forces. These lift forces have been ignored in many previous studies on particle-laden turbulence. The trajectory of the particles can be changed by the lift forces, resulting in a significant modification of the stochastic characteristics of heavy particles. Probability density functions and autocorrelations are evaluated from the velocity of solid particle, acceleration of solid particles, and acceleration of fluid at the position of solid particle. Changes in velocity statistics are negligible but statistics related with acceleration are affected by the rotation of particle. When a laden particle encounters coherent structures during its motion, the particle's rotation might significantly affects the motion due to intermittently large fluid acceleration near the coherent structures.

An experimental investigation is conducted to study a 2-phase vertically upward hydraulic transport of solid particles by water and non-Newtonian fluids in a slim hole concentric annulus with rotation of the inner cylinder. Rheology of particulate suspensions in viscoelastic fluids is of importance in many applications such as particle removal from surfaces, transport of proppants in fractured reservoir and cleaning of drilling holes, etc. In this study, a clear acrylic pipe was used in order to observe the movement of solid particles. Annular velocities varied from 0.3 m/s to 2.0 m/s. The mud systems included fresh water and CMC solutions. Main parameters considered in the study were inner-pipe rotation speed, fluid flow regime and particle injection rate. A particle rising velocity and pressure drop in annulus have been measured for fully developed flows of water and of aqueous solutions. For both water and 0.2% CMC solutions, the higher the concentration of the solid particles is, the larger the pressure gradients become.
Particle morphology change and different experimental condition analysis during composite fabrication process by traditional ball milling with discrete element method (DEM) simulation were investigated. A simulation of the three dimensional motion of balls in a traditional ball mill for research on the grinding mechanism was carried out by DEM simulation. We studied the motion of the balls, the ball behavior energy and velocity; the forces acting on the balls were calculated using traditional ball milling as simulated by DEM. The effect of the operational variables such as the rotational speed, ball material and size on the flow velocity, collision force and total impact energy were analyzed. The results showed that increased rotation speed with interaction impact energy between balls and balls, balls and pots and walls and balls. The rotation speed increases with an increase of the impact energy. Experiments were conducted to quantify the grinding performance under the same conditions. Furthermore, the results showed that ball motion affects the particle morphology, which changed from irregular type to plate type with increasing rotation speed. The evolution was also found to depend on the impact energy increase of the grinding media. These findings are useful to understand and optimize the particle motion and grinding behavior of traditional ball mills.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting two kinds of bat swing behavior through kinematic analysis. Method: A total of 32 high school baseball players participated in this study. The ball was placed on the tee-ball in a position where the subject could easily swing and the standard bat swing was performed as quickly and as accurately as possible using aluminum bats and wooden bats. Results: The aluminum bat showed a rapid swing speed of about 1.79 m/sec compared to the wooden bat. The speed of the batted ball was found to be significantly greater for the aluminum bat than for the wooden bat. In addition, although the difference between the shoulder-pelvis rotation angle according to the type of bat was not indicated, there was a statistically significant difference between the aluminum bat and the wooden bat in terms of the rotational angular velocity. Conclusion: Even though the results can explain the difference between the bat swing speed and the speed of the batted ball depending on the bat's material, it is difficult to explain the difference depending on the type of bat at the shoulder-pelvis rotation angle. However, shoulder-pelvic rotation angular velocity appears to be higher for the aluminum bat, and the differences in the type of bat is considered to be related to the batting swing factor.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the ball velocity changes depending on the different linear momentum of putter head. For this study, two different moving conditions(25cm free fall and 35cm free fall) of putter head were set. And two different types of ground conditions were used which are artificial grass green($180cm{\times}600cm{\times}1cm$) and glass green($40cm{\times}130cm{\times}1cm$). Movements of putter head and ball were recorded with 2 HD video cameras(60 Hz, 1/500s shutter speed). Small size control object($18.5cm{\times}18.5cm{\times}78.5cm$) was used in this study. Ball and putter head velocities were calculated by the First Central Difference Method(Hamill & Knutzen, 1995). Linear momentum of ball and putter head were calculated with mass and its velocities. Before impact, the velocity of the putter head of 35cm free fall was about 30% greater than that of the putter head of 25cm free fall. Linear momentum of putter head of 35cm free fall was about 0.355-0.364kg m/s and 25cm free fall was 0.251 kg m/s. After impact, putter head lost its linear momentum about 14-19% and adjusting time of putter head after impact would be 0.1 second. After 0.1 second, putter moved the route same as before impact. Maximum ball velocities were appeared 0.08s-0.10s after impact no matter what the ground conditions are. Ball velocities struck by 35cm free fall were 30 % faster than 25cm free fall. Linear momentum of ball struck by putter head was greater than that of expected amount because the moving ball has translational energy and rotational energy. Future study must treat three things. One is ball must struck by the different putters with different materials. Another is two-piece ball and three-piece ball should be used for the same condition studies. The other is height of center of rotation of club should be changed. In this study, the height of center of rotation of club head is 71cm from the ground. But recently many golfers used the long putter. Therefore next study should apply the different height of center of rotation of club head.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relations between the segments of the body, the three dimensional anatomical angle during One Hand Backhand Stroke and Two Hand Backhand in tennis. For the movement analysis three dimensional cinematographical method(APAS) was used and for the calculation of the kinematic variables a self developed program was used with the LabVIEW 6.1 graphical programming(Johnson, 1999) program. By using Eular's equations the three dimensional anatomical Cardan angles of the joint and racket head direction were defined. 1. In three dimensional maximum linear velocity of racket head the X axis and Y axis(horizontal direction) showed $-11.04{\pm}2.69m/sec$, $-9.31{\pm}0.49m/sec$ before impact, the z axis(vertical direction) maximum linear velocity of racket head did not show at impact but after impact this will resulted influence upon hitting ball. It could be suggest that Y axis velocity of racket head influence on ball direction and z axis velocity influence on ball spin after impact. The stance distance between right foot and left foot was mean $75.4{\pm}5.86cm$ during one hand backhand stroke and $72.6{\pm}4.67cm$ during two hand backhand stroke. 2. The three dimensional anatomical angular displacement of trunk in interna rotation-external rotation showed most important role in backhand stroke. and is follwed by flexion-extension. the three dimensional anatomical angular displacement of trunk did not show significant difference between one hand backhand stroke and two hand backhand stroke but the three dimensional anatomical angular displacement of trunk was bigger than one hand backhand stroke. 3. while backhand stroke, the flexion-extension and adduction-abduction of right shoulder joint showed significant different between one hand backhand stroke and two hand backhand stroke. the three dimensional anatomical angular displacement of right shoulder joint showed more flex and abduct in one hand backhand stroke. 4. The three dimensional anatomical angular displacement of left shoulder showed flexion, adduction, and external rotation at impact. after impact, The angular displacement as adduction-abduction of left shoulder changed motion direction as abduction. angular displacement of left shoulder as flexion-extension showed bigger than the right shoulder.

The effect of the Coriolis force on the 2-D turbulent boundary layer which is developed in the side wall of the rotating rectangular flow channel was investigated. In this study, we measured mean velocities, turbulent velocity components(axial as well as lateral ones) and Reynolds stresses of the turbulent boundary layer. For high Reynolds number flows, the turbulent boundary layer without pressure gradient is hardly affected by the rotation. For low Reynolds number flows, however, the shearing stress at suction side decreases. Consequently, the velocity near the wall become slower so that the thickness of the viscous sublayer expands. On the other hand, the velocity near the wall at pressure side turns out increased.
