BACKGROUND: The personal protective equipments (PPEs) is the most important factor for reducing the pesticide exposure during the preparation and spraying of pesticides. This study was to investigate the retention, repellence and penetration of protective clothing of PPEs according to the ISO 22608 'Liquid penetration resistance-pipette test. Protective clothing for agriculture worker is very important for their health. However, test method for measurement of protective clothing is not presented in Korea. METHODS AND RESULTS: In order to measure the retention, repellence and penetration of protective clothing, a apparatus for pipette method in accordance with the ISO Guideline was prepared. The test was conducted at $25{\pm}5^{\circ}C$, $60{\pm}10%$ of relative humidity and pipette applied to a apparatus was validated to take exact amount(0.2 mL). The retention, repellence and penetration of five types of protective clothing and one type of shirt were analyzed by GC/MS. Pendimethalin(5% a.i, emulsion) was used as a test pesticide to measure above factors. The retention were less than 11.0% with the exclusion of two types(F4 and shirt) and the repellency was more than 67.0% with the exclusion of shirt material. The penetration was less than 5.4%, however, that of shirt was 66.7%. CONCLUSION: This results indicated that all protective clothing were suitable to use as PPEs according to the criteria specified by ISO Guide 22608. However, shirt was not suitable due to high penetration. This test method established for measurement the retention, repellence and penetration of protective clothing will help to establish the test notice of pipette method.

Brassica rapa is one of the most valuable vegetable crops worldwide. Cultivated varieties of B. rapa exhibit diverse developmental and morphological appearances, which includes important vegetables, oilseeds, and fodder crops. In this study, various phenotypes of recombinant inbred lines (RILs) of B. rapa were investigated, including their responses to five different pathogenic Botrytis cinerea isolates, responses to aphid and thrips during flowering stages, days to flowering, and plant heights. Responses of 113 RILs to five different B. cinerea isolates showed variations, suggesting that genetic factors controlling resistance or tolerance against each isolate were dependent on isolate/genotype pairs. Correlation analysis was performed to understand the nature of genetic factors and the relationship among these phenotypes. Although high levels of correlation were not detected between phenotypes assessed in this study, statistically significant correlation was detected for several combinations. Significant positive correlations were found for different B. cinerea isolates, supporting that certain levels of commonality could exist in genetic components controlling resistance against different B. cinerea isolates. Based on correlation analysis using numbers of insects counted on plants, it was speculated that genetic factors responsible for aphid tolerance or repellence might be also involved in the response against thrips. Relationship between vegetative growth and tolerance against B. cinereal or insects is rather more complicated. However, it was observed that shorter plants appeared to have a certain level of tolerance or repellence against both aphids and thrips. Data presented in this study could be used to assist further genetic studies and breeding efforts to obtain Botritis and insect resistance for B. rapa.

Laboratory test method which determines the emulsification rate of dampening solution and ink has been described In lithography using the mutual repellence of oil and water, the emulsification is produced by dispersion of dampening water and ink because of the printing pressure on a practical press. Rheological properties of Ink-Water balance are the important factors in lithographic printing. The emulsification theory and laboratory test method deduced from Surland and Kim. It is shown that the emulfisication curves relate to the rates of change in the emulsifide ink\`s flow properties, to the shear stability of the emulsion formed To study on the factors determining the emulsion velocity, we have measured water pickup and calculated emulsification velocity constant \`k\` and activation energy.

We investigated the effects of the enzyme treatment of fiber for printability of coated paper. The results could summarized as follows, 1. The samples with enzyme treatment (average 87.8%) have higher ink gloss than the blank (85.6%). Printed density showed same trends with the ink gloss. However, the ${\beta}$-Glucosidase treated sample showed the lowest printed density (2.14 %) due to the lowest thickness of the ink layer, which is influenced by coated weight and surface smoothness. 2. The samples whose base paper was Xylanase and ${\beta}$-Glucosidase treated showed higher surface strength (4.2% and 4.0%, respectively) than the blank while the samples with the Hernicellulase and ${\beta}$-Glucuronidase treatment showed lower surface strength (3.2%and 3.7%, respectively) due to the influence of air permeability. 3. Hemicellulase and ${\beta}$-Glucuronidase treated base paper, which have relatively low air permeability, showed better ink repellence (4.3 and 4.4 %, respectively) than the blank (3.8 %). 4. The blank and the Xylanase treated base paper showed high set-off, which is the last category of printability.
Strain-hardening cement-based composites (SHCC) under cracked condition exhibits remarkable capillary absorption due to water ingress from multiple cracks. Surface treatment using water repellent agents is an effective way for improving water resistance of SHCC, but the water resistance may remarkably decrease when cracks penetrate impregnation depth. Another way is to add water repellent agents directly into the mixture, offering SHCC integral water repellency even if cracks form later. However, although integral water repellent treatment has been proved feasible by previous studies, there is still lack of simulation work on the treated SHCC for evaluating its durability. This study presents a simulation method for capillary absorption of cracked SHCC with integral treatment based on a multi-scale approach proposed in the authors' previous work. The approach deals with water flows in bulk matrix and multiple cracks using two individual transport equations, respectively, whereas water absorbed from a crack to its adjacent matrix is treated as the mass exchange of the two equations. In this study, the approach is enhanced for the treated SHCC by integrating the influencing of water repellency into the two transport equations as well as the mass exchange term. Using the enhanced approach, capillary absorption of water repellent SHCC under cracked condition is simulated, showing much more reduced water ingress than the untreated concrete, which is consistent with total absorption data from previous tests. This approach is also capable of simulating water spatial distribution with time in treated SHCC reasonably.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of coniferous essential oils (EOs) blended films on insect repellence and crop productivity. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film is widely used, especially in agriculture and for food packaging. Ethylene vinyl acetate was blended with LDPE to reduce volatilization of EOs. An EO from Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) was incorporated into the blend film to conduct field research on antimicrobial and insect repellent properties. Among the various concentrations of EO, the highest concentration (2.5%) showed the highest efficiency in terms of pesticidal activity. The ability to inhibit microbial growth can be explained by the lipophilic properties of the EO component, and many studies have already demonstrated this. Agricultural films containing all types of EO have been tested on various crops such as chili, cucumber, Korean melon and have been able to verify their effectiveness in avoiding pests and increasing yields. From these results, it was found that it is reasonable to use a modified film such as a composite film containing an EO for agriculture. Thus, the modified film containing EO has undoubtedly shown impressive potential for reducing the use of pesticides in a variety of ways, not only for agricultural mulching film but also for food and agricultural product packaging. This product is an environmentally friendly chemical and is safe for agricultural and industrial and food packaging applications, among others. In particular, the use of agricultural films significantly reduces the use of pesticides, suggesting that farmers can increase their incomes by reducing working hours and costs, and increasing production.
In the previous study, a variety of wood-based panels was thermally decomposed to manufacture carbonized boards that had been proved to be high abilities of insect and fungi repellence, corrosion and fire resistant, electronic shielding, and formaldehyde adsorption as well as sound absorption performance. Based on the previous study, carbonized medium density fiberboard (c-MDF) was chosen to improve sound absorption performance by holing and sanding process. Three different types of holes (cross shape, square shape, and line) with three different sanding thickness (1, 2, and 3 mm) were applied on c-MDF and then determined sound absorption coefficient (SAC). The control c-MDF without holes had 14% of SAC, however, those c-MDFs with holes had 16.01% (square shape), 15.68% (cross shape), and 14.25% (line) of SAC. Therefore, making holes on the c-MDF did not significantly affect on the SAC. As the degree of sanding increased, the SAC of c-MDF increased approximately 65% on sanding treated c-MDFs (21.5, 21.83, and 19.37%, respectively) compared to the control c-MDF (13%). Based on these results, composite sound absorbing panel was developed with c-MDF and MDF (11 mm). The noise reduction coefficient of composite sound absorbing panel was 0.45 which was high enough to certify as sound absorbing material.
Optical and electrical characteristics of the fluorocarbon films deposited in a high-density C4F8 plasma under various source powers and pressures were investigated. The F/C ratio of the fluorocarbon film deposited in a high-density C4F8 plasma increased with increasing source power and decreasing pressure due to two-step deposition mechanism. The change in the F/C ratio of the film directly affected the optical and electrical characteristics of the fluorocarbon films deposited in a high-density C4F8 plasma. The refractive index of the fluorocarbon film increased with decreasing source power and increasing pressure contrary to the dependence of the film's F/C ratio on the source power and pressure. This was because the increase in the F/C ratio suppressed electronic polarization and weakened the network structures of the film. The resistivity of the fluorocarbon film showed the same behavior as its F/C ratio. In other words, the resistivity increased with increasing source power and decreasing pressure, resulting from stronger repellence of electrons at higher F/C ratios. This work offers the feasibility of the use of the fluorocarbon films deposited in a high-density C4F8 plasma as an alternative to low dielectric constant materials because the optical and electrical properties of the fluorocarbon film can be directly controlled by its F/C ratio.

Rice plant extracts of brown planthopper (BPH) resistant rice varieties, Jangseongbyeo (JSB) and Hwacheongbyeo (HCB) at different growth stages (seedling, tillering, heading and ripening) were sequentially fractioned using hexane, ethyl ether, ethyl acetate, butanol, and distilled water. The extracts were applied to BPH susceptible rice variety, Dongjjnbyeo (DJB), to investigate the insecticidal and repellent effects against BPH. BPH insecticidal effects were not clearly observed with almost all of the extract fractions obtained from both JSB and HCB varieties for 12 h, whereas the ethyl ether and hexane extract fractions showed about 10 to 30% of BPH mortality in 24 to 48 h of application periods. An effective BPH repellent activity was found with the applications of ethyl ether extract fractions obtained from JSB variety. The extract fractions obtained from HCB variety did not show any different repellence among the various fractions. The BPH repellent effects of the extract fractions obtained at different growth stages of either JSB or HCB varieties did not show any correlations. The effect of ethyl ether fraction on BPH repellent was continually increased by 30 h after treatment and thereafter decreased. In addition, the first sub-fraction separated by a flash column chromatography eluted with chloroform:methanol (9:1, v/v) from the BPH effective ethyl ether faction in JSB variety might be meaningful to repel BPH from BPH susceptible target rice plants. The results indicated that the ethyl ether fraction obtained from JSB was higher in repellent activity than in insecticidal activity, and suggesting that there might be specific substance(s) in the first sub-fraction (sF1) of the ethyl ether fraction in JSB that could provide repellent activity against BPH.
