  • The software used in the nuclear safety field has been ensured through the development, validation, safety analysis, and quality assurance activities throughout the entire process life cycle from the planning phase to the installation phase. However, this evaluation through the development and validation process needs a lot of time and money, and there are limitations to ensure that the quality is improved enough. Therefore, the effort to calculate the reliability of the software continues for a quantitative evaluation instead of a qualitative evaluation. In this paper, we propose a reliability evaluation method for the software to be used for a specific operation of the digital controller in a nuclear power plant. After injecting weighted faults in the internal space of a developed controller and calculating the ability to detect the injected faults using diagnostic software, we can evaluate the software reliability of a digital controller in a nuclear power plant.

  • Reliability demonstration tests (RDT's) are widely employed in design verification and process validation stages of industry. New mixed attribute-variable RDT plans that compromise demerits of the corresponding zero and zero or one failure plans which are common in practice are developed for the exponential distribution. The proposed mixed plans are compared with the typical RDT plans in terms of probability of acceptance and expected test termination time. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the mixed plans and a procedure to extend these plans to the Weibull distribution with known shape parameter is also presented.

  • The railway system is being converted to the computer system from the existing mechanical device, and the dependency on software is being increased rapidly. Though the size and degree of complexity of software for railway system are slower than the development speed of hardware, it is expected that the size will be grown bigger gradually and the degree of complexity will be increased also. Accordingly, the validation of reliability and safety of embedded software for railway system was started to become influential as the important issue. Accordingly, various software test and validation activities are highly recommended in the international standards related railway software. In this paper, we presented a software coding analysis tool using symbolic execution for railway system, and presented its result of implementation.

  • Background: Kinovea software that tracking semi-automatically the motion in video screen has been used to study motion-related tasks in several studies. However, the validation of this software in open field test to assess locomotor activity have not been studied yet. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the reliability and validity of this software in analyzing locomotor activities. Methods: Thirty male Institute Cancer Research mice were subjected in this study. The results examined by this software and the classical method were compared. Test-retest reliability and inter-rater reliability were analyzed with Pearson's correlation coefficient and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). The validity of this software was analyzed with Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results: This software showed good test-retest reliability (ICC=0.997, 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.975-0.994, p<0.001). This software also showed good inter-rater reliability (ICC=0.987, 95% CI=0.973-0.994, p<0.001). Furthermore, in three analyses for the validity of this software, there were significant correlations between two methods (Pearson's correlation coefficient=0.928-0.972, p<0.001). In addition, this software showed good reliability and validity in the analysis locomotor activity according to time interval. Conclusion: This study showed that this software in analyzing drug-induced locomotor activity has good reliability and validity. This software can be effectively used in animal study using the analysis of locomotor activity.

  • The purpose of this study was to validate New Ecological Paradigm(NEP) Scale for use with elementary school students in Korea, and to obtain evidences of validation for interpreting the scores on the instrument. Three pilot tests were taken to modify and 1,003 fifth and sixth grade students in elementary schools participated in this survey. To examine the reliability and validity of the NEP Scale for elementary school students in Korea, item analysis(mena, skewness, kurtosis, item-total correlation), internal consistency estimate, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and t-test were used. After analyzing their results, the authors suggest that a 2-dimensional(pro-NEP, anti-NEP) modified NEP Scale, with 15 items and revised wording, is appropriate for use with elementary school students in Korea.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the intra-rater reliability and inter-rater reliability of three different methods using a drawing protractor, a digital protractor after tracing, and a CAD system. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Twenty-four artificial abutments that had been prepared by dental students were used in this study. Three dental students measured the convergence angles by each method three times. Bland-Altman plots were applied to examine the overall reliability by comparing the traditional tracing method with a new method using the CAD system. Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICC) evaluated intra-rater reliability and inter-rater reliability. RESULTS. All three methods exhibited high intra-rater and inter-rater reliability (ICC>0.80, P<.05). Measurements with the CAD system showed the highest intra-rater reliability. In addition, it showed improved inter-rater reliability compared with the traditional tracing methods. CONCLUSION. Based on the results of this study, the CAD system may be an easy and reliable tool for measuring the abutment convergence angle.

  • The sound transmission loss is a key index to evaluate the acoustic performance of a car-body structure at the high frequency range. From this paper, a new validation method for in-situ sound transmission loss is proposed. First, in-situ sound transmission loss is measured by using PU intensity probe on the condition of complete vehicle. Second, validation test, which is consisted of internal, external and total frequency response function test, is performed by using volume acceleration source and microphones. Then, these test results are compared to validate the accuracy of in-situ sound transmission loss. Finally, the test result of in-site method is compared with results of two reverberant room test method and SEA analytical method. The reliability of in-situ method is confirmed by these procedures.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the model of course evaluation design for CEA(Course-Embedded Assessment), which is focused on course level for assessment reliability. This study was conducted by the process of model development and validation according to Richey & Klein(2007)'s model development methodology. The model of this study was comprised with the three steps of learning objectives based on course outcome, assessment design and goal achievement analysis of course, which were explained by specific design principles. Also, this model was validated by two steps, which one was on the inner validation and the other was the outer validation(Richey & Klein, 2007). Considerations for designing the model of course evaluation have been suggested and a few implications were discussed.

  • In reliability engineering, the bathtub-shaped hazard rates play an important role in survival analysis and many other applications as well. For the bathtub-shaped, initially the hazard rate decreases from a relatively high value due to manufacturing defects or infant mortality to a relatively stable middle useful life value and then slowly increases with the onset of old age or wear out. In this paper, we present a new two-parameter lifetime distribution function, called the Loglog distribution, with Vtub-shaped hazard rate function. We illustrate the usefulness of the new Vtub-shaped hazard rate function by evaluating the reliability of several helicopter parts based on the data obtained in the maintenance malfunction information reporting system database collected from October 1995 to September 1999. We develop the S-Plus add-in software tool, called Reliability and Safety Assessment (RSA), to calculate reliability measures include mean time to failure, mean residual function, and confidence Intervals of the two helicopter critical parts. We use the mean squared error to compare relative goodness of fit test of the distribution models include normal, lognormal, and Weibull within the two data sets. This research indicates that the result of the new Vtub-shaped hazard rate function is worth the extra function-complexity for a better relative fit. More application in broader validation of this conclusion is needed using other data sets for reliability modeling in a general industrial setting.
