High Capacity Relay Protocols for Wireless Networks

  • Over the last five years, relaying or multihop techniques have been intensively researched as means for potentially improving link performance of wireless networks. However, the data rates of relays are often limited because they cannot transmit and receive on the same frequency simultaneously. This limitation has come to the attention of researchers, and recently a number of relay techniques have been proposed specifically to improve the data efficiency of relaying protocols. This paper surveys transmission protocols that employ first single relays, then multiple relays and finally multiple antenna relays. A common feature of these techniques is that novel signal processing techniques are required in the relay network to support increased data rates. This paper presents results and discussion that highlight the advantages of these approaches.

Relay Selection Based on Rank-One Decomposition of MSE Matrix in Multi-Relay Networks

  • Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems assisted by multi-relays with single antenna are considered. Signal transmission consists of two hops. In the first hop, the source node broadcasts the vector symbols to all relays, then all relays forward the received signals multiplied by each power gain to the destination simultaneously. Unlike the case of full cooperation between relays such as single relay with multiple antennas, in our case there is no closed form solution for optimal relay power gain with respect to minimum mean square error (MMSE). Thus we propose an alternative approach in which we use an approximation of the cost function based on rank-one matrix decomposition. As a cost function, we choose the trace of MSE matrix. We give several simulation results to validate that our proposed method obtains a negligible performance loss compared to optimal solution obtained by exhaustive search.

  • Accelerated life test models and procedures are developed to assess the reliability of typical power relays. The main function of relays is to control high voltage circuits by operating low voltage circuits. The accelerated life test method and test equipments are developed using the relationship between stresses and life characteristics of the products. Using the developed accelerated life test method, the parameters of the ALT model and lifetime distribution are estimated and the reliability of the relays at use condition is assessed. The proposed accelerated life test method and procedure may be extended and applied to testing similar kinds of products to reduce test time and costs of the tests remarkably.

  • This study shows achievable capacity gain from the MMR system. Relay stations are placed along the cell boundary in tiers. We can have as many tiers of relays and as many relays in each tier as we want. A model is developed, which can estimate the system capacity varying the number of relays in each tier and the bandwidths allocated to the BS and the RS. It is shown that maximum capacity increases are 21.5% and 18.9% when we have relays in the first tier only and in the first and the second tiers, respectively.

  • A new dielectric test on main relays of electric traction vehicles, the partial discharge(PD) test, is proposed. The PD test will not affect the insulation performance of specimen during the test and provide much more detailed information on insulation, the types of defects, and so on. Insulation performance of relays is estimated by discharge inception voltage(DIV), discharge extinction voltage (DEV), and apparent charge as a function of test voltage and time. Three main relays of different manufacturing date were estimated by applying AC voltage with three patterns in ranges of $0{\sim}1,200[V]$. From the results, we could estimate insulation state and which types of defects exist in them.

  • CT saturation may cause protective relays to malfunction. The conventional method to deal with the problem is overdimensioning of the core so that CTs can carry up to 20 times the rated current without exceeding 10 % ratio correction. However, this not only reduces the sensitivity of relays, but also increases the CT core size. This paper presents a technique of estimating the secondary current corresponding to the CT ratio under CT saturation using the magnetization curve. The proposed algorithm can improve the sensitivity of relays to low level faults and minimize the instability of relays for external faults.

  • 본 논문에서는 IEEE 802.11 환경에서 무선 협력 통신을 이용하여 성능을 향상 시키는 방법에 대해 제안한다. 기존 협력 통신 알고리즘은 소스(source)와 AP(Access Point) 사이에 1개의 릴레이(relay)를 두어 수행한 2 홉 릴레이(hop relay) 방식으로, 이는 알맞은 릴레이를 찾을 수 없는 경우가 발생하므로 보완이 필요하다. 본 논문에서는 AP에서 네트워크 정보(노드 사이 전송률, 노드와 AP 사이 전송률)를 관리하여 릴레이 선정에 이 네트워크 정보를 이용한다. 이 정보를 이용하여 AP는 1개 이상의 릴레이를 선정하여 소스와 주위 노드에게 선정된 릴레이를 알리고 소스에서 데이터를 전송할 때 이 릴레이를 통해 협력 통신을 하도록 한다. 이러한 협력 통신 방법은 데이터 전송의 효율성을 높인다. 또한 본 논문에서는 소스의 데이터를 전송한 릴레이는 소스의 데이터를 전송한 후에 자신의 데이터 또한 전송할 수 있는 기회를 가지도록 하여 소스 데이터를 대신 전송하여 소비된 노드의 자원을 만회할 수 있는 기회를 가지게 한다. 이로써 제안된 방법을 이용하면 노드의 자원 소비를 보완함은 물론 전체 네트워크의 성능(throughput)을 향상시킬 수 있다.

  • 멀티미디어 데이터의 전송영역 확장을 위한 기술로 고정 릴레이 기반 셀룰러 시스템에 대한 관심이 지속적으로 증가하고 있다. 고정 릴레이 기반 셀룰러 시스템에서 릴레이를 추가함으로 생기는 셀 간 또는 섹터 간 간섭은 기지국과 단말기 또는 릴레이와 단말이 사이의 높은 링크성능을 보장하지 못하여 성능저하를 가져올 수 있기 때문에 간섭을 회피하기 위한 자원할당은 매우 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 리피터 중계기를 이용한 셀룰러 시스템과 릴레이를 이용한 셀룰러 시스템의 성능을 비교하여 릴레이 중계기를 이용할 때 셀 커버리지 확장을 비교하고자 한다. 비교를 위해 셀룰러 시스템에 고정 릴레이를 설치할 때 셀 간과 섹터 간 간섭을 피하기 위하여 리피터 중계기를 사용하는 경우의 자원할당과는 다른 자원 할당 방법을 제안한다. 제안된 기법은 인접한 기지국들과 릴레이들에게 서로 다른 주파수 자원을 할당하여 간섭을 줄임으로서 높은 데이터 전송영역의 확장이 가능하며, 기지국들과 릴레이들이 동시에 동작할 때 각 섹터에서 전체 주파수 대역을 사용함으로서 주파수 효율성을 높일 수 있다.

DFT 기반의 개선된 페이저 연산 기법을 적용한 거리계전 알고리즘 (Distance Relaying Algorithm Using a DFT-based Modified Phasor Estimation Method)

  • In this paper, we propose a distance relaying algorithm using a Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT)-based modified phasor estimation method to eliminate the adverse influence of exponentially decaying DC offsets. Most distance relays are based on estimating phasors of the voltage and current signals. A DFT is generally used to calculate the phasor of the fundamental frequency component in digital protective relays. However, the output of the DFT contains an error due to exponentially decaying DC offsets. For this reason, distance relays have a tendency to over-reach or under-reach in the presence of DC offset components in a fault current. Therefore, the decaying DC components should be taken into consideration when calculating the phasor of the fundamental frequency component of a relaying signal. The error due to DC offsets in a DFT is calculated and eliminated using the outputs of an even-sample-set DFT and an odd-sample-set DFT, so that the phasor of the fundamental component can be accurately estimated. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated for a-phase to ground faults on a 345 kV, 50 km, simple overhead transmission line. The Electromagnetic Transient Program (EMTP) is used to generate fault signals. The evaluation results indicate that adopting the proposed algorithm in distance relays can effectively suppress the adverse influence of DC offsets.

Degrees of Freedom of Two-Cluster MIMO Multiway Relay Interference Channels Using Blind Interference Neutralization

  • In this paper, we investigate the degrees of freedom (DoF) of a two-cluster multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiway relay interference channel (mRIC), where there are two relays and two users per cluster. In this channel, users within the same cluster exchange messages among themselves with the help of two relays.We first obtain the DoF upper bound of the considered MIMO mRIC based on cut-set bound. Then, we propose a novel transmission strategy, blind interference neutralization (BIN), to approach the DoF upper bound. This new method utilizes the overheard information at two relays and focuses on the beamforming matrix designs at two relays so that the channel state information (CSI) at users is not required. Through theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, we show that the DoF upper bound can be obtained by using the BIN scheme. From simulation results, we show that the proposed BIN scheme can provide significant performance gain over the conventional time division multiple access (TDMA) scheme in terms of DoF. In addition, we show that the BIN scheme is a superior approach to the existing signal space alignment (SSA) schemes for the considered mRIC.
