This paper presents a novel automatic white balance (AWB) algorithm for consumer imaging devices. While existing AWB methods require reference white patches to correct color, the proposed method performs the AWB function using only an input image in two steps: i) white point detection, and ii) color constancy gain computation. Based on the dark channel prior assumption, a white point or region can be accurately extracted, because the intensity of a sufficiently bright achromatic region is higher than that of other regions in all color channels. In order to finally correct the color, the proposed method computes color constancy gain values based on the Y component in the XYZ color space. Experimental results show that the proposed method gives better color-corrected images than recent existing methods. Moreover, the proposed method is suitable for real-time implementation, since it does not need a frame memory for iterative optimization. As a result, it can be applied to various consumer imaging devices, including mobile phone cameras, compact digital cameras, and computational cameras with coded color.

The pixel-based processing of an image refers to a process of converting a value of one pixel only depending on the value of the current pixel, regardless of the value of another pixel. Pixel-based processing is used as the most basic operation in many fields such as image conversion, image enhancement, and image synthesis. There are processing methods such as arithmetic operation, histogram smoothing, and contrast stretching. In this paper, in order to clearly distinguish the tidal flat region from the tidal flat image of the west coast taken with a drone, we seek a method to find an efficient outline using pixel-based processing in the boundary detection part of the pre-processing process.

This paper proposes an efficient and yet powerful local descriptor called phase-space partition based descriptor (PPD). This descriptor is designed for the mobile image matching and retrieval. PPD, which is inspired from SIFT, also encodes the salient aspects of the image gradient in the neighborhood around an interest point. However, without employing SIFT's smoothed gradient orientation histogram, we apply the region based gradient statistics in phase space to the construction of a feature representation, which allows to reduce much computation requirements. The feature matching experiments demonstrate that PPD achieves favorable performance close to that of SIFT and faster building and matching. We also present results showing that the use of PPD descriptors in a mobile image retrieval application results in a comparable performance to SIFT.

This paper proposes an improved image segmentation algorithm by the watershed algorithm based on the local adaptive threshold on local minima search and the fixing threshold on label allocation. The previous watershed algorithm generates the problem of over-segmentation. The over-segmentation makes the boundary in the inaccuracy region by occurring around the object. In order to solve those problems we quantize the input color image by the vector quantization, remove noise and find the gradient image. We sorted local minima applying the local adaptive threshold on local minima search of the input color image. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm controls over-segmentation and makes the fine boundary around segmented region applying the fixing threshold based on sorted local minima on label allocation.
In this paper, we propose a content-based image retrieval using the color ratio and moment of object region. We acquire an optimal spatial information by the region splitting that utilizes horizontal-vertical projection and dominant color. It is based on hypothesis that an object locates in the center of image. We use color ratio and moment as feature informations. Those are extracted from the splitted regions and have the invariant property for various transformation, and besides, similarity measure utilizes a modified histogram intersection to acquire correlation information between bins in a color histogram. In experimental results, the proposed method shows more flexible and efficient performance than existing methods based on region splitting.
In this paper, we propose a method for intensity correction using binarization-based region segmentation in 3D stereoscopic images. In the proposed method, 3D stereoscopic right image is segmented using binarizarion. Small regions in the segmented image are eliminated. For each region in right image, a corresponding region in left image is decided through region matching using correlation coefficient. When region-based matching, in order to prevent overlap between regions, we remove a portion of the area closed to the region boundary using morphological filter. The intensity correction in left and right image can be performed through histogram specification between the corresponding regions. Simulation results show the proposed method has the smallest matching error than the conventional method when we generate the right image from the left image using block based motion compensation.

Video Segmentation is an essential part in region-based video coding and any other fields of the video processing. Among lots of methods proposed so far, the watershed method in which the region growing is performed for the gradient image can produce well-partitioned regions globally without any influence on local noise and extracts accurate boundaries. But, it generates a great number of small regions, which we call over segmentation problem. Therefore we proposes that adaptive trimmed mean filter for resolving the over segmentation of image. Simulation result, we confirm that proposed ATM filter improves the performance to remove noise and reduces damage for the clear degree of image in case of the noise ratio of 20% and over.

In this paper, automatic shot panorama construction method is presented. For construction of panorama image, conventional panoramic techniques manually took two panorama members, but the proposed method automatically takes panorama members according to moving camera and constructs panorama image. The panorama members are automatically selected and taken by tracking region over image stream form camera. Matching region for panorama including the tracking region in the members is selected and applied by invariant feature panoramic method. Our method can automatically shot panorama members and has merit of high processing speed. In the experiments, it was shown that the algorithm required about 0.89 second in processing time, about two times shorter than existing invariant feature based one(6), for color images of $320{\times}240$ size.

In this study, measurements were conducted by image processing to do an in-depth evaluation of strain of rebar in a uniaxial tension test. The distribution of strain and the necking region were evaluated. The image processing is used to analyze the color information of a colored image, so that the parts consistent with desired targets can be distinguished from the other parts. After this process, the image was converted to a binary one. Centroids of each target region are obtained in the binary images. After repeating such process on the images from starting point to the finishing point of the test, elongation between targets is calculated based on the centroid of each target. The tensile test were conducted on grade 60 #7(D22) and #9(D29) rebars fabricated in accordance with ASTM A615 standards. Strain results from image processing were compared to the results from a conventional strain gauge, in order to see the validity of the image processing. With the image processing, the measuring was possible in not only the initial elastic region but also the necking region of more than 0.5(50%) strain. The image processing can remove the measuring limits as long as the targets can be video recorded. It also can measure strain at various spots because the targets can easily be attached and detached. Thus it is concluded that the image processing helps overcome limits in strain measuring and will be used in various ways.
In medical image processing field, object recognition is usually processed based on region segmentation algorithm. Region segmentation in the computing field is carried out by computerized processing of various input information such as brightness, shape, and pattern analysis. If the information mentioned does not make sense, however, many limitations could occur with region segmentation during computer processing. Therefore, this paper suggests effective region segmentation method based on R2-map information within the magnetic resonance (MR) theory. In this study, the experiment had been conducted using images including the liver region and by setting up feature points of R2-map as seed points for 2D region growing and final boundary correction to enable region segmentation even when the border line was not clear. As a result, an average area difference of 7.5%, which was higher than the accuracy of conventional exist region segmentation algorithm, was obtained.
