  • This paper uses the Korean Labor Panel data to investigate changes in the employment types of male workers following their job changes with the classification of workers into three categories: regular wage workers, non-regular wage workers, and self-employed workers. It also estimates a competing-risks hazard model to analyze the determinants of employment types of workers. The results show that the type of employment of a worker at an immediate previous job has a critical importance in determining his employment type at a new job and that the types of employment at jobs other than the immediate previous job also play some role in determining the type of employment at a new job, although their impact declines as the number of intervening jobs increases. A job loser, who worked as a non-regular worker at his immediate previous job, for example, is considerably less likely to find a regular job, but more likely to get reemployed at another non-regular job than one who worked as a regular worker at his immediate previous job. Similarly, a worker who quit self-employment is much less likely to find a regular job but more likely to restart his own business than one who worked as a regular worker at his immediate previous job. These findings suggest that it is not easy at all for a worker who worked as either a non-regular worker or self-employed worker to become a regular worker, although it might be premature to assert that non-regular jobs or self-employed jobs are dead-end jobs. Another interesting finding of this analysis is that a high unemployment rate lowers a probability of reemployment at either regular jobs or self-employed jobs, but raises a non-regular job reemployment probability, which strongly implies that as labor market conditions become adverse to workers the proportion of non-regular employment can rise rapidly.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of positive psychological capital on re-employment attitudes of youth in their 20s dealing with an unemployment rate of more than 10%. The effect of positive psychological capital on attitudes for re-employment was analyzed by domain, and is based on variables of positive psychological capital composed of self-efficacy, hope, resilience, and optimism. As a result, hope (3.64) was the highest on the scale; however, resilience (at 3.37) was the lowest. In the analysis of positive psychological capital, the university graduate group (3.89) was the highest. But, the high school graduate group (3.25) was the lowest. In the results for re-employment attitude based on education level, the university graduate group (4.93) was the highest, but the high school graduate group (3.80) was lowest. The main variables influencing re-employment attitude were (in order): hope, optimism, self-efficacy, and resilience. These factors have an explanatory power for the four variables of around 25%. Overall, young adults (in their 20s) have higher levels of positive psychological capital because they have a higher education level. Also, higher educated re-employed applicants have higher positive psychological capital and attitudes for re-employment, compared to the other groups.

  • The purpose of the present study was to examine the desire of married women to be re-employed and the factors related to this desire. The study gathered information from 240 women who gave up their jobs and careers after marriage. Information included their career history, current psycho-social condition, and family situation. Multiple regression and covariation structure analyses indicated that the desire of married women to go back to paid work was influenced by family economic condition, psycho-social condition, and child care situation. Specifically, the study found that family's monthly income and the age of the last child were negatively related to the women's desire for re-employment. On the other hand, economic pressure and achievement motivation were positively related to the women's desire. Finally, the study found that socio-economic background and external social support were not significantly related to the women’s wish to go back to the workforce.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify relatively important predictors of quality of life (QOL) of HSCT recipients among client's characteristics(age, gender, family income, religiosity), HSCT-related characteristics(time since HSCT, type of HSCT, decision maker of HSCT) and social support. Methods: Eighty two participants who had a HSCT were recruited for the study. Data were analyzed by descriptive analysis, pearson's correlation, ANOVA and stepwise multiple regression using SPSS for Window(version 12.0) program to answer the research questions. Results: Family income, time since HSCT and religiosity explained 23.8% of the variance in the QOL of HSCT recipients. HSCT recipients who had higher family income, longer time past since HSCT, and more religious tend to have higher quality of life. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, we could know that the HSCT recipients need certain amount of time to recover their QOL after HSCT. Opportunities of reemployment and religious support should be considered when we develop intervention program for HSCT recipients.

  • The purpose of this study is to study the influence of the entrepreneurship of the senior generation on the will to start a business at a time when the senior generation cannot lead to technology start-ups or reemployment even after retirement. In addition, in this study, we look at the relationship between entrepreneurship and will to start a business and use social and intellectual capital to verify the impact of entrepreneurship on the will to start a business. This study shows that entrepreneurship is concerned with the relationship between social and intellectual capital and not with the relationship between entrepreneurship and will to start a business. In addition, the relationship between social capital to the will to start a business was significant and the intellectual capital was not significant in the will to start a business. Even if entrepreneurship is embedded, it means that experience and network of social and intellectual capital are essential to the will to start a business, rather than to start one right away.

  • The work history of the workers injured in industrial accidents was recomposed by combining the database on compensation for industrial accidents with the database on employment insurance among those who were newly classified as disabled during the period from 1998 to 2000. It shows that the injured workers mainly returned to the original workplaces, and such workers had higher job retention rate. It is in contrast with the higher separation rate of the workers who started to work at the new workplace after medical recuperation. And it is found that 61% left or lost their jobs out of the injured workers who returned to work, and 77% of the job separators had job tenure less than one year. The analysis based on competing risks model shows that the workers at the smaller workplace have the shorter the employment duration, and the longer job-searching period has the negative effect on the employment duration of the job losers. In addition, the longer employment duration at the first job after medical recuperation is more effective on the reemployment and job stability after separation.
