  • Achieving a highly resolved spatial distribution of Mn-bearing minerals and elements in the natural ferromanganese nodules can provide detailed knowledge of the temporal variations of geochemical conditions affecting the formation processes of nodules. While a recent study utilizing Raman spectroscopy has reported the changes in the manganate mineral phases with growth for spherical nodules from the Arctic Sea, the distributions of minerals and elements in the nodules from the shallow Arctic Sea with non-spherical forms have not yet fully elucidated. Here, we reported the micro-laser Raman spectra with varying data acquisition points along three different profiles from the center to the outermost rim of the non-spherical ferromanganese nodules collected from the East Siberian Sea (~73 m). The elemental distributions in the nodule (such as Mn, Fe, etc.) were also investigated by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis to observe the internal structure and mineralogical details. Based on the microscopic observation, the internal structures of a non-spherical nodule can be divided into three different regions, which are sediment-rich core, iron-rich substrate, and Mn-Fe layers. The Raman results show that the Mn-bearing mineral phases vary with the data acquisition points in the Mn-Fe layer, suggesting the changes in the geochemical conditions during nodule formation. In addition, we also observe that the mineral composition and structural characteristics depend on the profile direction from the core to the rim. Particularly, the Raman spectra obtained along one profile show the lack of Fe-(oxy)hydroxides and the noticeably high crystallinity of Mn-bearing minerals such as birnessite and todorokite. On the other hand, the spectra obtained along the other two profiles present the presence of significant amount of amorphous or poorly-ordered Fe-bearing minerals and the low crystallinity of Mn-bearing minerals. These results suggest that the diagenetic conditions varied with the different growth directions. We also observed the presence of halite in several layers in the nodule, which can be evidence of the alteration of seawater after nodule formation. The current results can provide the opportunity to obtain detailed knowledge of the formation process and geochemical environments recorded in the natural non-spherical ferromanganese nodule.

  • SnNb2O6 nanoplates were prepared by a solvothermal synthesis with water and ethanol mixed solvent. For improvement of their properties, as-prepared SnNb2O6 nanoplates also were calcined. The prepared powder was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), UV-vis spectroscopy, Raman spectrometer, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The calcined nanoplates have a smaller surface area than the as-prepared nanoplates have. Nevertheless, in the case of the optical absorption properties, the calcined nanoplates could absorb more photon energy, due to their smaller band gaps. The Raman analysis revealed that the Nb-O bond length in the calcined nanoplates was longer than that in the as-prepared nanoplate. The higher optical absorption capability of the calcined nanoplates was attributed to the local structure variation within them. Furthermore the high crystallinity of the calcined nanoplates is effective in improving the generation of charge carriers. So, It was found that the calcined nanoplates exhibited superior photocatalytic activity for the evolution of H2 from an aqueous methanol solution than the as-prepared nanoplates under UV and visible irradiation. Therefore, the enhanced photocatalytic activity of the calcined nanoplate powder for H2 evolution was mainly attributed to its high crystallinity and improved optical absorption property resulting from the variation of the crystal structure.

  • Properties of a free-standing diamond wafer with a diameter of 80 mm and a thickness of 900~950 $mu extrm{m}$ deposited by the multi-cathode direct current plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (MCDC PACVD) method were investigated. Defects of the diamond film were observed by optical transmission microscopy and its crystallinity was characterized by Raman and IR spectroscopy. Defects were distributed partially on boundaries of the grain. In the grain, (111) plane contained a higher defect density than that on (100) plane. FWHM of Raman diamond peak and IR transmission at 10.6 $\mu\textrm{m}$ were 4.6 $\textrm{cm}^{-1}$ /~5.3 $\textrm{cm}^{-1}$ and 51.7 ~ 61.9 %, and their uniformity was $\pm$7% and $\pm$9%, respectively. The diamond quality decreased with going from center to edge of the wafer.

  • This paper describes the Raman scattering characteristics of polycrystalline (poly) 3C-SiC thin films, in which they were deposited on the oxidized Si substrate by APCVD method according to growth temperature. Since the phonon modes were not measured for $0.4{\mu}m$ thick 3C-SiC, $2.0{\mu}m$ thick 3C-SiC deposited on the oxidized Si at $1180^{\circ}C$, in which TO (transverse optical mode) and LO (longitudinal optical mode) phonon modes were appeared at 794.4 and $965.7cm^{-1}$, respectively. The broad FWHM (full width half maximum) can explain that the crystallinity of 3C-SiC deposited at $1180^{\circ}C$ becomes polycrystalline instead of disorder crystal. Additionally, the ratio of intensity $I_{LO}/I_{TO}{\approx}1.0$ of 3C-SiC indicates that the crystal disorder of $3C-SiC/SiO_2/Si$ is small. Compared poly $3C-SiC/SiO_2$ with $SiO_2/Si$ interfaces, $1122.6cm^{-1}$ phonon mode was measured which may belong to C-O bonding and two phonon modes, 1355.8 and $1596.8cm^{-1}$ related to D and G bands of C-C bonding in the Raman range of 200 to $2000cm^{-1}$.

  • Carbon nanotubes were prepared by catalytic decomposition of $CH_4$ using Ni-MgO catalyst at various temperatures. $H_2$ effect on crystallinity and morphology during the synthesis of carbon nanotubes was investigated. The crystallinity and morphology were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, TGA, and Raman spectroscopy. In addition, the hydrogen adsorption properties were evaluated by PCT measurement in a hydrogen pressure range between 1 and 120 bar. The optimal synthesis temperature of carbon nanotubes was elevated in the presence of $H_2$, although significant difference of carbon nanotube morphology was not found. It is believed that hydrogen served as self-cleaner mops the amorphous carbon on the catalyst surface. It is proved that the carbon nanotubes have multi-walled structure, short length with a outer diameter of 20 ~40nm and open tips after elimination of the catalyst. The amount of hydrogen adsorbed in carbon nanotubes is increased as the pressure of hydrogen is increased and reaches 1.3 wt % under the hydrogen pressure of 120 bar at room temperature.

  • Diamond thin films were deposited on pretreated Co cemented tungsten carbide (WC-6%Co) inserts as substrate by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) system, equipped with a 915MHz, 30kW generator for generating a large-size plasma. The substrates were pretreated with two solutions Murakami solution $[KOH:K_3Fe(CN)_6:H_2O]$ and nitric solution $[HNO_3:H_2O]$ to etch, WC and Co at cemented carbide substrates, respectively. The deposition experiments were performed at an input power of 10 kW and in a total pressure of 100 torr. The influence of various $CH_4$ contents on the crystallinity and morphology of the diamond films deposited in MPCVD was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The diamond film synthesized by the $CH_4$ plasma shows a triangle-faceted (111) diamond. As $CH_4$ contents was increased, the thickness of diamond films increased and the faceted planes disappeared. Finally, Faceted diamond changed into nano-crystalline diamond with random crystallinity.

  • Herein we investigated the effect of the conductive agent on the electrochemical performance of the SiOx anode. SiOx anodes have a relatively low volume expansion (~160%) compared to Pure-silicon, but have a problem in that they have a poor electrical conductivity characteristic. In this study, physical and electrochemical measurements were performed using two 0-dimensional amorphous carbon conductive agents with different crystallinity and surface area. The crystal structure of the conductive agents and the local graphitization degree were analyzed through XRD and Raman, and the surface area of the particles was observed through BET. In addition, the electrical performance according to the graphitization degree of the conductive agents was confirmed through a 4-point probe. As a result of the electrochemical cycle and rate performance, it was confirmed that the performance of SiOx using a conductive agent having a low graphitization degree and a high surface area was improved. The results in this study suggest that the graphitization degree and surface area of the amorphous carbon conductive agent may play an important role in the SiOx electrode.

  • The diamond thin film was deposited on Si(100) substrate from$CH_3OH/H_2O$mixtured gas using a hot filament chemical vapor deposition(HFCVD) method. The deposition condition for samples has been varried with the$CH_3OH/H_2O$composition. Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and Raman spectroscopy has been employed for the sample analysis. The diamond sample has been obtained below 20Pa with$CH_3OH/H_2O$mixtured gas. The crystallinity of diamond film improved as the composition $CH_3OH$decreases from 60Vol% to 52Vol%, and the sample structure changed from the cauliflower to the diamond structure. But the sample structure was becomes cauliflower at 50Vol% of in$CH_3OH$ in the $CH_3OH/H_2O$. It was shown that the$CH_3OH$ has threshold composition.

  • The effect of the surface activation treatment on the crystallization of the amorphous silicon film was investigated. The amorphous silicon film was deposited on the silica substrate with LPCVD technique. Wet blasting with silica slurry or exposure with Nd:YAG laser beam was applied on the amorphous silicon film before annealing for the crystallization. For the analysis of the crystallinity, XRD, Raman, and SEM were employed. In this investigation, the prior surface activation treatment like silica wet blasting or Nd:YAG laser beam exposure before annealing for the crystallization were found to be effective in the enhancement of the crystallization. It is believed that these treatment lower the activation energy required for the crystallization of the amorphous silicon film.
