  • There is increasing interest, on the global basis, in the operation of ocean surface radars for measurement of coastal sea surface conditions to support environmental, oceanographic, meteorological, climatological, maritime and disaster mitigation operations. In south Korea, ocean surface radars are operating to monitoring oil spill, outflow from dike or preventing from safety-accidents in the 6 regions (16 radial sites) by main frequency about 13, 25 and 42 MHz until the present. However, that ocean surface radars have been operated on an experimental spectrum basis. In the results of 3~50 MHz band domestic analysis to improve the regulatory status of the spectrum used by oceanographic radars, it was demonstrated that sufficient frequency bands are available for oceanographic radars on the frequency band above 20 MHz. It is difficult to deploy and operate oceanographic radars in the sub-bands below 20 MHz except for 13 MHz band. For using HF ocean surface radars one should understand the spectrum environment in Korea and should prepare a suitable operating system and data processing techniques.

  • The purpose of airborne radars is to detect and identify approaching targets as early as possible. If the targets are identified as enemies, detection systems must provide defense systems with information of the targets to counter. Though many previous studies based on the detection theory of the target have shown various ways to derive detection probability of each radar, optimal arrangement of radars for effective detection, and determination of the search pattern, they did not reflect the fact that most military radar sites run multiple radars in order to increase the accuracy of identifications by radars. In this paper, we propose a model to analyze the probability of identification generated by the multiple radars using non-homogeneous absorbing markov chains. Our results are expected to help the military commanders counter the enemy targets effectively by using radars in a way to maximize the identification rate of targets.

  • In the past, radars have been classified into fire control radars, detection radars, tracking radars, and image acquisition radars according to the characteristics of the mission. However, multi-function radars perform various tasks within a single system, such as target detection, tracking, identification friend or foe, jammer detection and response. Therefore, efficient resource management is essential to operate multi-function radars with limited resources. In particular, the target threat for tracking the detected target and the method of selecting the tracking cycle based on this is an important issue. If focus on tracking a threat target, Radar can't efficiently manage the targets detected in other areas, and if you focus on detection, tracking performance may decrease. Therefore, effective scheduling is essential. In this paper, we propose the TaP (Time and Priority) algorithm, which is a multi-functional radar scheduling scheme, and a software design method to construct it.

  • At present, multiple input multiple output radars offer accurate target detection and better target parameter estimation with higher resolution in high-speed wireless communication systems. This study focuses primarily on power allocation to improve the performance of radars owing to the sparsity of targets in the spatial velocity domain. First, the radars are clustered using the kernel fuzzy C-means algorithm. Next, cooperative and noncooperative clusters are extracted based on the distance measured using the kernel fuzzy C-means algorithm. The power is allocated to cooperative clusters using the Pareto optimality particle swarm optimization algorithm. In addition, the Nash equilibrium particle swarm optimization algorithm is used for allocating power in the noncooperative clusters. The process of allocating power to cooperative and noncooperative clusters reduces the overall transmission power of the radars. In the experimental section, the proposed method obtained the power consumption of 0.014 to 0.0119 at K = 2, M = 3 and K = 2, M = 3, which is better compared to the existing methodologies-generalized Nash game and cooperative and noncooperative game theory.

  • To improve the performance of identification for radars in an ES(Electronic warfare Support) system, it is necessary to estimate scan characteristics as well as the basic identification parameters such as frequency, pulse repetition interval and pulse width of radars. This paper presents the method of estimating the scan period and the scan beam width of circular scanning radars. The proposed method estimates the scan period using the quality of the autocorrelation of a periodic signal. And, it estimates the scan beam width using the linear interpolation and the proposed method of estimating the scan period. Simulation results are presented to show the performance of the proposed method.

  • Cross eye technique was proposed as an angle deception jamming technique against monopulse radars. Tracking radars use monopulse or conical scan methods for angle estimation of a target. Thus, if we verify deception performance of cross eye technique against a conical scan radar, efficient jamming systems can be developed to disturb both monopulse radars and conical scan radars. In this paper, we propose a mathematical model for a conical scan radar and a cross eye system. Using the proposed model, angular deception performance of the cross eye technique against conical scan radar is analyzed.

  • The performance measure of airborne radars is the range at which the cumulative probability of detection has some specified value, because the per-scan detection probability is an oscillatory function of the target range in airborne radars operating with the dynamic clutter environment. As a result, no one range, at which the per-scan detection probability has a given value, can give a meaningful description of the range performance. In this paper, we provide the equation to calculate the cumulative detection probability and show that the result of Monte Carlo simulation is same as the calculated value in a simple scenario. This verified Monte Carlo model will be used to evaluate the performance of airborne radars in various operating scenarios, at which the numerical calculation is difficult.

  • This study presents an imaging algorithm that can provide an image of a moving target in a multiple-input-multiple-output radar environment where multiple transmitting and receiving radars are fixed on the ground. The proposed algorithm, which is based on polar format processing using plane wave approximation, is shown to provide an unaliased image by using multiple transmitting radars even when the distances between the receiving radars are relatively large. We derive the conditions necessary to deploy the transmitting radars by which the resolution of the reconstructed image can be improved, while simultaneously reducing aliasing artifacts. Moreover, we offer a means of separating out each transmitting radar target echo. Finally, the performance of the proposed system is verified through a simulation.

  • The interference among the rain radars and interference in the adjacent wireless station due to the spurious signals from the rain radar were analyzed in this paper. The rain radar measures the rain intensity using S-band signal. The measured data are utilized in forecasting the rainfall. The interference among the rain radars or in the adjacent wireless stations may be caused by the operation with low elevation angle and the high output power. Based on the propagation analysis of S band signal and the deduced interference protection ratio of rain radar, the interference due to the rain radar are analyzed. Also, the radiation spectrum characteristics of a rain radar are deduced from the caused interference effects by the spurious signals of the rain radar. To minimize the interference effects for adjacent wireless stations, it is required to get the rejection characteristics of spurious signals above 105 dB. In viewpoints of interference for rain radars, it is necessary to operate the rain radar with a different PRF and operation time opposite to adjacent rain radars.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method to deinterleave multi-stage stagger PRI signals of pulse radars using the electronic intelligence systems. While former algorithms were based on hardware PRI tracker only using the first deviation of the TOA of radar signals, this paper uses the first and the second deviation of TOA of radar signals and uses the PRI histogram method to deinterleave multiple PRIs of pulse radars. This algorithm can be used for deinterleaving various PRI signals at electronic intelligence systems.
