  • Recently, a considerable number of studies have been made on the $RFID^{[1-6]}$ systems. RFID is a technique of identifying an object using radio frequency transmission. The technology can be used to identify, track, sort or detect a wide variety of objects. The RFID system is composed of two main elements: a reader and a tag. Tags can either be active (powered by battery) or passive (powered by the reader field). The passive tags communicate back to the reader with a technique called 'backscatter'. RFID technology can be applied to the supply chain, security, logistics industry and etc. Especially, UHF RFID is worth noticing because of its relatively long identification range and commercial UHF RFID systems are under development. In this paper, we designed and implemented a UHF RFID reader firmware for ISO/IEC 18000-6 Type B specification.

  • This paper presents a 13.56 MHz RFID reader that can be used as a door-lock system for smart home security. The RFID reader consists of a transmitter, a receiver, and a data processing block. To verify the operation of the developed RFID reader, we present both a PSPICE simulation for transmitter/receiver and a digital simulation for data processing block. In particular, a CRC block for error detection of received data and a Manchester decoding block for position detection of collided data are designed using VHDL. In addition, we applied a binary search algorithm for multi-tag anti-collision. The anti-collision procedure is carried out by PIC microcontroller on software. The experimental results show that the developed reader can provide the right multi-tag recognition.

  • When reader collect tags, we found that they tend to get together to specific interface in Multi-Interface Multi-Channel 2.4GHz Active RFID system. To solve this problem, we designed the LP-Combind and AP-Balanced protocol for load distribution between interfaces, then verified its superiority of the performance through the simulation. There are three problems to implement designed protocols in hardware of firmware-level. first, tag selects randomly the channel of reader and reader need the method which can change the channel of tags. second, reader has the synchronization problem between reader and tag. third, reader has problem that MCU of reader have to operate simultaneously dual interface. To slove this problems, we designed the message and implemented method for tag channel change and the protocol in order to adjust synchronization between reader and tag, Therefore, we compared and analyzed the performance of protocols by experiment. If LP windows size is same, the performance of LP-Combined protocol and AP-Balanced protocol which lower collision probability by its load distribution is more outstanding than single interface protocol performance.

  • When a real-time data transfer is not possible between a reader and a back-end server in the mobile environment, the reader should support a capability to search a certain tag without communicating with a back-end server. Some recent papers related to the mobile reader-based tag search protocol have addressed privacy concerns for the reader and the tags. However, to our best knowledge, there are no papers addressing the problem arising from reusing tag lists existed in the mobile reader. In other words, there arise a problem that a mobile reader which has lost an right to access to a specific tag is able to search that tag by reusing a tag list for searching a particular tag. If mobile reader having an unauthorized tag list, the mobile reader can reuse a particular tag list. Our protocol provides the enhanced secure tag lists preventing the reuse of the tag lists and an efficient tag search protocol based on dynamic identity in the mobile reader-based RFID environments.

  • When an RFID reader attempts to read tags, interference might occur if the neighboring readers also attempt to communicate with the same tag at the same time or the neighboring readers use the same frequency at the same time. These interferences cause the RFID reader collision. When the RFID reader collision occirs, either the command from the reader can not be transmitted to the tags or the response from the tags can not be received by the reader correctly. RFID reader anti-collision algorithms have been developed to reduce it. One of the best blown reader anti-collision algorithms is the Colorwave algorithm proposed by MIT. The Colorwave algorithm reduces the reader collisions by having the readers operate at different times. In Colorwave the time is divided into frames and a frame is divided into a number of slots. Each reader can access the tags using the slot time assigned to it. Depending on the probability of the interference, the colorwave adjusts the frame size to improve the efficiency. In this paper, we analyze the operations and the performance of the Colorwave algorithm and identify the problems of the algorithm. We also show that by adding some modifications to the algorithm the performance can be improved significantly.

  • Recently, study on RFID Tag Searching technique which is used to find a specific tag in particular tag group were developed continuously. RFID tag searching technique can be applicate in various fields such as product management, finding children, and electronic anklet. To implement a RFID tag search system, RFID tag searching protocol should be considered various security threats such as reader and tag tracking, privacy, etc. For implementing a safe RFID tag lookup system, it is important to consider the potential security threats such as the tag tracking problem, and the privacy of the owner of the tag reader problem. There exists an RFID tag lookup system that satisfies a few security requirements, but the privacy of the owner of the tag reader problem has still been left unsolved, and even if it were solved, it requires a considerable amount of cryptographic operations to be performed which results in a decrease in performance. This paper proposes a system that does not degrade the performance while solving the privacy of the owner of the tag reader problem.

  • RFID applications use tags to identify objects, but recent applications tend to include diverse sensor devices such as light, temperature, and humidity sensors as well. RFID tag information is usually processed via the event driven model. However sensor devices are usually accessed via the functional call model. Therefore application developers have to deal with mixed data access models and device dependent interface functions. In this paper, we propose a sensor reader emulator that provides a consistent access interface to sensor devices regardless of the types of devices. SRE provides a more efficient way of developing RFID applications by providing a single application programmer's view to RFID tags and sensor devices. In applications where tags are fixed to a place, SRE can replace expensive sensor tags and sensor readers with inexpensive sensor devices reducing the total cost while providing the same functionality.

  • This paper describes the design of a 5th order Elliptic CMOS Gm-C low-voltage filter for the RFID reader IC. The designed filter is composed of CMOS differential transconductors by parallel gain circuits to improve the gain of the conventional self-biased differential amplifier. The filter is designed to operate in low-voltage 1.8V to meet the specification of the RFID reader filter. The results of HSPICE simulation using 1.8V-0.18${\mu}m$CMOS processing parameter showed that the designed 5th order Elliptic low-pass filter satisfied the cutoff frequency of 1.35MHz given by the design specification.

  • This paper proposed a transponder detection method to reduce recognition time in RFID system. It's also shown that conventional procedure of communication in the system could cause a waste of time when a reader recognizes a transponder. The reduction of recognition time can be obtained by developing a circuit to detect a transponder actively. Detecting a transponder is achieved by using the voltage variation of reader antenna voltage that happens when a transponder approaches to the vicinity of magnetic field formed by the reader. By adding a comparator to the antenna receiver of a reader, the reader can perceive approach or existence of a transponder. A reader for experiment is made using the MFRC500 by Phillips that supports ISO/IEC 14443 protocol. Comparing the proposed method with the conventional methods by experiment, there are 47.5ms reduction of recognition time maximally and 12ms in average.
