This paper presents a general-purpose design scheme of a filter bank (FB)-based radio frequency (RF) transceiver that operates across the entire ultra-high frequency (UHF) TV band from 470 MHz to 698 MHz and complies with the TV white space (TVWS) regulatory requirements. To this end, an intermediate frequency (IF) band-pass filter (BPF) with a sharp skirt characteristic is considered as a solution for handling the incoming signals from a baseband modem. Specifically, an FB-based BPF structure with four ceramic resonator filters that effectively rejects unwanted signals is proposed to extract a desired signal in the TV band. Achievable data rates of a cognitive radio system (CRS) employing the proposed FB-based RF transceiver at the application layer are investigated in both wired and wireless environments. The service coverage of the CRS network is measured according to several modulation and coding schemes (MCSs) of the CRS. The results show that the coverage of a wireless network in a nearly open area can be extended by more than 9.3 km in the TVWS. Experimental results also confirm that the proposed FB-based RF transceiver is adequate for utilization in TVWS applications.

ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) recommends the introduction of SBAS (Satellite Based Augmentation System) in 2025, which provides GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) correction data and the ranging signal via GEO (geostationary earth orbit) satellites to GNSS users. In this paper, we present the basic design results of the satellite communication system RF link for the Korean SBAS systems, KASS (Korea Augmentation Satellite System) which is going on the development & implementation. KASS RF link was designed in consideration of both the C-band and Ku-band uplinks to meet the international standard requirements for the SBAS system, and identified the minimum EIRP and G/T performance of the KASS uplink station for each frequency band. These analysis results for the RF link design are expected to be used for an effective design of the subsystem specifications for KASS satellite communication system.

The implementation of a BTS(Base station Transceiver) for WLL system using W-CDMA(Wideband-Code Division Multiple Access) method is presented in this paper. It consists of three boards; receiver, transmitter and RF controller. Some RF parameters are considered and simulated by the RF simulation S/W using commercial and customized components specifications. The implemented transceiver of 5 MHz RF channel bandwidth satisfies the system requirements of a transceiver such as dynamic range, sensitivity in the receiver and spurious emission suppression in the transmitter. At the receiver, the experimental measurement showed 2.86 dB of NF and 60 dB above of dynamic range in AGC(Automatic Gain Control) locking. At the transmitter, the -49.46 dBc of spurious emission suppression is attained when the output power of the transmitter is 34.3 dBm. These results are good enough to meet to standard performance specifications.

In this research, we develop an airborne equipment radiating S/C-band signal to a target located at a long distance. RF interface of the equipment comprises band-specific transmitters and an broadband antenna to satisfy EIRP(effective isotropic radiated power) requirements. The equipment is in a shape of a POD like an aircraft fuel tank. The measured weight of the equipment is 119.8 kg, the CG(center of gravity) is 1391.35 mm and the MOI(moment of inertia) are 46.07 ± 0.05(Iyy) kg·㎡, 45.36 ± 0.09(Izz) kg·㎡. All results are found to meet the requirements for aircraft installation. To verify flight safety, EMI(electromagnetic interference) tests (RE102, CE102), environmental tests (high/low temperature operation, altitude), intra-system EMC(electromagnetic compatibility) and HERP(hazards electromagnetic radiation personnel) tests have been conducted and all the test results met the requirements. It is confirmed that the equipment could be mounted on the aircraft by meeting all electrical and mechanical requirements.

A RF-MEMS (radio-frequency microelectromechanical-system) based DPDT (double pole double throw) switch for the Ku band has been designed and analyzed for this article. The switch topology is based on the FG-CPW (finite ground-coplanar waveguide) configuration of a microstrip-transmission line. An FEM-based multiphysics solver is used for the evaluation of the spring constant, stress distribution, and pull-in voltage regarding the requirements of the switch-beam unit. The electromagnetic performance of the switch is investigated for a $675{\mu}m$ thick silicon substrate. For the operational frequency of 14.5 GHz, an insertion loss better than -0.3 dB, a return loss better than -40 dB, and input/output- and output-port isolations better than -35 dB are achieved for the switching unit.

This paper presents three dimensional structure of RF packages and the improvement effect of its electrical characteristics when implementing RF transceivers. We divided RF modules into several subunits following each subunit function based on the partitioning algorithm which suggests a method of three dimension stacking interconnection, PAA(pad area array) interconnection and stacking of three dimensional RF package structures. 224MHz ITS(Intelligent Transportation System) RF module subdivided into subunits of functional blocks of a receiver(RX), a transmitter(TX), a phase locked loop(PLL) and power(PWR) unit, simultaneously meeting the requirements of impedance characteristic and system stability. Each subfunctional unit has its own frequency region of 224MHz, 21.4MHz, and 450KHz~DC. The signal gain of receiver and transmitter unit showed 18.9㏈, 23.9㏈. PLL and PWR modules also provided stable phase locking, constant voltages which agree with design specifications and maximize their characteristics. The RF module of three dimension stacking structure showed $48cm^3$, 76.9% reduction in volume and 4.8cm, 28.4% in net length, 41.8$^{\circ}C$, 37% in maximum operating temperature, respectively. We have found that three dimensional PAA package structure is able to produce high speed, high density, low power characteristics and to improve its functional characteristics by subdividing RF modules according to the subunit function and the operating frequency, and the features of physical volume, electrical characteristics, and thermal conditions compared to two dimensional RF circuit modules.

TR module using in satellite must consider discriminative electrical and mechanical requirements compare to the one using in ground and aircraft system since not only the environment level of vibration and shock during the launch stage but also the level of radiation, vacuum and thermal variation from orbit environment are more severe than atmosphere condition. This paper describes the environmental conditions of launch and the orbit and, suggests design method of TR module applying GaN to satisfy the unique environmental requirements of satellite systems by especially focusing on parts selection, derating design, RF budget design, manufacturing process design, and thermal design of TR module.

This study measured the radio environment of 10 domestic institutions with CubeSat ground stations for 24 hours in three frequency bands (VHF/UHF/S-band) allocated by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The impact of the RF environment around the ground stations on CubeSat downlink frequencies was analysed and compared with acceptable interference noise requirements from the CubeSat RF link. The findings indicate that not only the selection of downlink frequency but also the configuration of RF communication link design and ground station system of CubeSat should consider the S-band RF environment around the ground station due to the presence of several wireless devices.

This paper evaluates the adjacent channel coexistence issues between LAA(License Assisted Access) system and other system (e.g. Wi-Fi) system in 5 GHz unlicensed spectrum. LAA is a technology to achieve enhanced data rate by aggregating licensed and unlicensed spectrum using CA(Carrier Aggregation). The coexistence study is essential before deploying LTE in unlicensed spectrum to verify the impact of LTE on the existing system such as Wi-Fi including system in throughput and regulatory aspects. This paper evaluates and analyzes the RF requirements of LTE system using interference analysis of coexistence study when operating at adjacent frequency channel of the Wi-Fi system in order to minimize the impact of LTE system into Wi-Fi system.
