Types of Attitudes toward a Successful Life of Korean Nursing Students: A Q-Methodological Approach (한국 간호대 학생의 성공적 삶에 관한 태도 유형: Q방법론적 접근)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze attitudes toward a successful life of students majoring in nursing science. Method: The Q-methodology which provides a method of analyzing the subjectivity of each items was used. The 32 selected Q-statements from each of 36 subjects were classified into a shape of normal distribution using a 9 point scale. The collected data was analyzed using a QUANL PC program. Result: Four types of successful life attitudes for research subjects in nursing science were identified. Type I is purpose achievement type, Type II is calling fullness type, Type III is balance maintenance type, and Type IV is happiness eagerness type. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that different approaches to nursing professional education programs are recommended based on the four types of successful life attitudes.

An Attitudinal Study on Women (여성에 대한 태도분석)

  • Purpose: This study was formed to propose a theoretical background for improving the quality of women's lives by measuring the subjectivity on women. Method: Q-methodology is used for purpose. Q-statements are collected through in-depth interviews and a literature review. 34 Q-statements were selected. There are 33 subjects in the research. The Q-Factor Analysis using PC Quanl program was performed to analyze the data. Result: There were three types of opinions on woman. The first type(equal-recognitive) thinks that men and women are equal, women can handle men, and women are independent, valuable beings. The second type(equal-fixed idea) express that women are not behind men in terms of abilities but are supposed to live for the sake of their husbands and children. The third type(equal-practical) answer that men and women are equal, but women have their own personalities and can participate in social activities and can financially help the families. Conclusion: The study express the overall opinions and attitudes on woman as reviewed by the research subjects. Therefore, this study helps the seizure of an opportunity to build a theoretical base for improving the quality of women's lives.

The Types of Nurses Perception of Whistle-Blowing;Q-Methodology (간호사의 내부고발 인식유형에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: This study was to define structural subjectivity pattern of whistle-blowing of hospital nurses. Method: This study was conducted using Q-methodology in order to classify the types of perception to an whistle-blowing from the inside of the incumbent hospital nurses. Nineteen members, including hospital nurses, professors and students majoring in the nursing department made 47 statements about the insider's accusation after an in-depth interview about the statements. Forty incumbent hospital nurses were the participants for the Q-Methodology. The statement data was analyzed with QUANL PC Program and five different types were classified according to how the nurse had replied to the statements. Result: The first one is a Propeller type. The second one is a Denial type. The third type is a Patient Advocate type. The fourth one is a Anonymous type. The fifth is a Netizen type. Conclusion: this study as a momentum, a reasonable and constitutional legislation in the nurses organization should be established as soon as possible.

Subjectivity on Stressful Life Events of Middle-aged Women - A Q Methodology Approach - (중년여성의 스트레스 생활사건에 관한 주관성 연구)

  • This study measures the subjectivity on stressful life events of middle- aged women. Method: Q-Methodological method was used for that purpose. As for the research method, Q-statements were collected preliminary to the study of through in-depth interviews and a literature review. For the study 38 Q-statements were selected. There were 28 middle aged women as subjects for the research. Q-Factor Analysis by using PC Quanl Program to supply the material. Result: Through the result of this study, the stressful life events of middle-aged women could be identified by 4 types. The type I is called the conflict in relationship with husband's family members. The type II is called lack of marital intimacy. The type III is called low self-esteem. The type IV is called changing life cycle itself. Conclusion: Therefore, identifing the subjectivity on the stressful life events of middle-aged women would be a basic step for the understanding of middle aged women.

A Q-methodology Study on Subjective Attitudes toward Dementia in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 치매에 대한 주관적 태도: Q 방법론적 연구)

  • Purpose: Nursing students are key personnel to take care of people with dementia in the nursing field in future. The purpose of this study was to identify subjective attitudes toward dementia in nursing students. Methods: Q methodology, which is a research method to study people's subjective points of views, was used. Thirty seven Q-statements (Q-sample) were derived from the Q population (Concourse) and were arranged in rank order by each of 42 participants into a normal distribution grid (from -4 to +4). A QUANL program was used to analyze the collected data. Results: Three types of attitudes toward dementia were identified: 'self-guided dementia management', 'national-guided dementia management' and 'facility-guided dementia management.' Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that nursing strategies to improve understanding of dementia and actively cope with dementia should be considered.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze types of nurse's attitudes toward the aging process. Methods: A Q-methodology which provides a method of analyzing the subjectivity of each item was used. Thirty-four selected Q-statements from each of 38 subjects were classified into a shape of normal distribution using a 9 point scale. The collected data was analyzed using a QUANL PC program. Results: Five types of attitudes towards the aging process from research subjects in Korean nurses were identified. Type I is a positive acceptance type, Type II is a negative acceptance type, Type III is a passive coping type, Type IV is an active coping type, and Type V is an ambiguous acceptance type. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that different approaches of educational programs for elderly care are recommended based on the five types of nurse's attitude toward the aging process.

Attitudes of Adolescents toward Suicide: Q-Methodological Approach (청소년의 자살에 대한 태도: Q-방법론적 접근)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify attitudes of adolescents toward suicide. Methods: Q-methodology which provides a method of analyzing the subjectivity of each item was used. Thirty middle and high school students classified 37 selected statements into a normal distribution using a 9 point scale. Collected data were analyzed using the Quanl PC Program. Results: Three types of attitudes toward suicide were identified. The first type (opposing suicide-moral minded) showed an attitude of opposing suicide and thinking that suicide is a sin. The second type (understanding-empathizing suicidal person) showed an attitude of understanding the situation of the adolescents who has suicidal ideation and empathizing with them. The third type (ambivalent attitude) showed an attitude of understanding the suicidal person but, at the same time, opposing suicide. Conclusion: Results of the study indicate that different approaches to suicide prevention programs should be developed based on the three types of suicide attitudes among adolescents.

Perceptions of Medical Personnel toward Burnout using Q Methodology (의료인의 소진에 대한 지각: Q 방법론 적용)

  • Purpose: This exploratory study was done to categorize medical personnel's perceptions of burnout and analyzed the characteristics. Methods: Q methodology was applied using a 45 Q-sample categorized on an 11-point scale which was completed by nurses and doctors working at a university hospital in Seoul, Korea. Collected data were analyzed using the PC-QUANL program. Results: Medical personnel's perceptions of burnout were categorized into three types; 33.83% of the total variance was explained. The first type was 'functionally deteriorating pressure' the second type was 'daily powerlessness' and the third was 'achievement-oriented re-energization'. Conclusion: There is a need to establish and apply intervention strategies for each type to alleviate medical personnel burnout and increase work efficiency to qualitatively improve medical services.

Recognition on Suicidal Intent of the Elderly among Caregivers: A Q-Methodological Application (노인 자살의도에 대한 주부양자의 인식: Q-방법론 적용)

  • Purpose: This study's purpose is to classify and analyze caregivers' recognition of the elderly suicidal intents. Methods: This study uses applied Q-methodology to measure human subjectivity in depth. Concretely, 35 statements are composed in depth interviews and literature investigation. Then, Q-cards and distributive chart of Q-sampling were given to 25 caregivers randomly-selected, who were asked to arrange them on a 7-score based. After coding Q-factor analysis is carried out with the PC-QUANL program. Results: Four types of indicators of the elderly suicidal intents were identified by the caregivers. These are Knowledge-based recognition, Behavioral measure based recognition, Negative comprehension and Sympathy. Conclusion: In this study, four types of recognition were yielded among the caregivers and the characteristics of each type were analyzed. These findings may be useful in assessing suicidal potential and nursing interventions.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the types of anger expression in adolescent women. Methods: The Q-Methodology which provides a method of analyzing the individual's subjectivity was used. The 32 subjects classified 50 selected Q-statements on a 9 point scale to make a normal distribution. The collected data was analyzed by a PC-QUANL program. Results: Five types of anger expression in adolescent women were identified. Type I: Direct attacking expression type, Type II: Mature consideration type, Type III: Passive indirect expression type, Type IV: Avoidance conversion type, and Type V: Expression control type. Conclusion: This study revealed that different approaches of nursing intervention strategies are recommended based on the five types of anger expression and their characteristics.
