  • In this study the concepts for science learning of physics and earth science presented in the seventh grade science textbooks for the seventh national curriculum of Korea approved by the ministry of education were analyzed in terms of the concrete and formal concept level. The parts of textbook analyzed for science learning consist of three sections in physics such as light, force, and waves, and three sections in earth science such as the structure of the earth, the substance of crust, and the movement and composition of the ocean. The analyzed results showed that the number of scientific concepts were differed from 54 to 74 in physics and from 86 to 120 in earth science depending upon publishers. In general, the concepts for science learning in the physics were found to be more in the formal level than the concrete level. However, the concepts for science learning in earth science were found to be more in the concrete level than the formal level. The analyzed results suggest that the concepts of science learning should be considered the learner's cognitive level and the sections should be disposed depending on the degree of difficulty for writing the science textbook. Therefore, it seems to be important to review carefully whether the textbook meets the object of the seventh curriculum of Korea during the process of the investigation for the science textbook.

  • The purpose of this study was to seek a workable alternative to replace a big deal related to the journal budget for the maintenance of academic libraries with the largest issue on the E-journal consortium. The contents of this study was to present it. It had examined the current situation, strengths, weaknesses and corresponding to replace the big deal contract. After reviewing the literature, we looked into the alternative activities for the big deal such as open access-based, usage-based, consortium improvement-based, publishers lead, and other models. As a result, the 'consortium cost reapportion model' was an alternative for the KESLI. The alternative was in the short term for cost division format, but long-term oriented for a consortium single(bloc) payment type or national licence model. The model was based on the data from the last year. It had evaluated download the PDF and HTML documents, but the three times weighting more than others, and the rest of 14 factors of 0.5 to 5 out of 100 total score. The total amount negotiated by national units 10, 20 and 30 grades for the final step was allocated to the participating library on the KESLI consortium.

  • This study aimed to investigate, analyze and identify the problems related to SNS usage by publishing companies around Twitter, Facebook and Me2day as well as theoretically investigate SNS, and ultimately to suggest the approaches to improve the outstanding issues identified. In accordance with the analysis, only 0.5%(222 publishing companies) in total publishing companies(41,407) opened SNS[3.7%(1,537) opened the independent website.] Second, in accordance with the investigation on 212 publishing companies in 222 companies opening SNS(71 twitters, 74 facebooks, 67 Me2days), the communication was not significant to the extent that only 50.5%(107) kept the communication with less than 100 readers or potential readers. Furthermore, 77.4%(164 companies) had less than 1,000 postings by publishing companies. The analysis on the postings(500) by users and postings(300) by publishing companies demonstrated that those postings were mostly related to marketing, introduction, recommendation and reading of publications by publishing companies. It means that the postings were mostly positive. However, 86.6% of postings by users in SNS of publishing companies was merely one-time posting. It indicated that continuity was not sufficient.

  • Biodiversity informatics applies information technology methods in organizing, accessing, visualizing, and analyzing primary biodiversity data and quantitative data management through the scientific names of accepted names and synonyms. We reviewed the GBIF data published by China, Japan, Taiwan, and internal institutes, such as NIBR, NIE, and KNA of the Republic of Korea, and assessed data in diverse aspects of data quality using BRAHMS software. Most data from four Asian countries have quality problems with the lack of data consistency and missing information on georeferenced data, collectors, collection date, and place names (gazetteers) or other invalid data forms. The major problem is that biodiversity management institutions in East Asia are using unstructured databases and simple spreadsheet-type data. Owing to the nature of the biodiversity information, if data relationships are not structured, it would be impossible to secure the data integrity of scientific names, human names, geographical names, literature, and ecological information. For data quality, it is essential to build data integrity for database management and training systems for taxonomists who are continuous data managers to correct errors. Thus, publishers in East Asia play an essential role not only in using specialized software to manage biodiversity data but also in developing structured databases and ensuring their integration and value within biodiversity publishing platforms.

  • As part of effort to develop the strategies of internationalization of social science academic journals in South Korea, this study attempts to verify the measurement invariance of journal selection criteria across the groups of library and information science researchers and social science researchers. The authors collected 146 survey responses from researchers who have published at least one paper in SSCI/Scopus-indexed social science journals between 2014 and 2016. As a result of the study, it was found that the configural and partial metric invariance of the journal selection criteria held across the two groups, implying that the model of journal selection criteria is appropriate to use in the field of social science as well as library and information science. Additionally, the authors investigated the perceptions of journal selection criteria indicators in the two groups, and it was shown that researchers in both groups considered peer review and indexing in major databases important. The findings of this study could be useful for publishers or academic societies to develop improvement strategies of their journals.

  • Bibliographic metadata can help researchers effectively utilize essential publications that they need and grasp academic trends of their own fields. With the manual creation of the metadata costly and time-consuming. it is nontrivial to effectively automatize the metadata construction using rule-based methods due to the immoderate variety of the article forms and styles according to publishers and academic societies. Therefore, this study proposes a two-step extraction process based on rules and deep neural networks for generating bibliographic metadata of scientific articlles to overcome the difficulties above. The extraction target areas in articles were identified by using a deep neural network-based model, and then the details in the areas were analyzed and sub-divided into relevant metadata elements. IThe proposed model also includes a model for generating reference summary information, which is able to separate the end of the text and the starting point of a reference, and to extract individual references by essential rule set, and to identify all the bibliographic items in each reference by a deep neural network. In addition, in order to confirm the possibility of a model that generates the bibliographic information of academic papers without pre- and post-processing, we conducted an in-depth comparative experiment with various settings and configurations. As a result of the experiment, the method proposed in this paper showed higher performance.

  • For everyone, books are not only a passage to break down temporal and spatial barriers, but also a passport to the world. However, books are neither a passage nor a passport for persons with print disabilities. They are suffering from a severe book famine, with only 1-7% of alternative materials in accessible formats. The Marrakesh Treaty is an international agreement promoted by the WBU and WIPO to reduce such access gaps and inequalities. Accordingly, this study intensively analyzed and linked the global book famine and the Marrakesh Treaty for the persons with print disabilities including the blind and visually impaired, and suggested strategic tasks and implementation plans to strengthen the services of the disabled in domestic libraries. The government and libraries should concentrate all their competencies on improving awareness, inducing standardization of alternative materials in the publishing industry, amending and supplementing the copyright act and related laws, strengthening the digital file collection and service of the National Library for the disabled, and developing and applying library guidelines to implement the Marrakesh Treaty. This is because if food supports the body of the disabled, reading fosters their spirit. In order to solve the global book famine for persons with print disabilities, it is necessary to improve the publishing industry's cartels, copyright holders' barricades, and the weak platform of the library industry. All copyright holders, publishers, and libraries should participate in reducing the 95% gap in access between non-disabled and disabled people. That is the mantra of the book famine.

  • The purpose of this study is to extract and analyze ecological citizenship elements in the middle school home economics textbook used in the 2015 national curriculum for the introduction of ecological transformation education in the 2022 national curriculum. As a result of the analysis, the content analysis of the ecological citizenship factor was validated by six experts who are incumbent middle school home economics teachers, and the S-CVI value was 0.97, ensuring the validity of the ecological citizenship factor analysis. The results of analyzing 242 ecological citizenship factors extracted from home economics textbooks are as follows. According to the content area of the 2015 national home economics curriculum, the 'human development and family' area had the highest presence of ecological citizenship factors followed by the 'resource management and self-reliance' area and the 'home life and safety' area. Among the categories of ecological citizenship factors, 'value⋅attitude' was the most frequent, followed by 'process⋅function' and 'knowledge⋅understanding'. For each textbook composition system, ecological citizenship elements were extracted in the order of pictures, text, activities, and supplementary materials. There was a significant variation in the number of ecological citizenship factors among publishers, indicating the importance of the textbook writers' perception, interpretation, and direction of writing. Based on these analysis results, ecological citizenship teaching and learning activities applicable to home economics education were presented. This study highlights the potential for practicing ecological citizenship education in line with the new orientation of the curriculum on ecological transformation education through home economics education. Furthermore, it provides valuable baseline data for the development and implementation of textbooks for the 2022 national curriculum.
