  • In this study, a research model was designed and verified in order to determine whether the communication styles of public library managers affect employees' empowerment, job satisfaction, and life satisfaction. A survey was conducted among employees of four public libraries in the Gyeonggi region and 24 libraries in Seoul, and 229 valid responses were analyzed. The analysis revealed that authoritative communication style influenced employees' job satisfaction, while social communication style influenced their empowerment. Additionally, employees' empowerment impacted their job satisfaction, which in turn affected their life satisfaction. This implies that job satisfaction and life satisfaction of the employees can be achieved after communication and empowerment were well established within the organization. This study is meaningful in suggesting an effective management direction for strengthening the essence and foundation of public libraries by examining the theoretical significance and implications of the research result. This study also suggested that in the future, another research should be conducted based on a variety of characteristics by integrating the different communication styles of researchers.

  • Purpose: This study investigated factors related to empowerment of paramedic students. Methods: A total of 208 students in the department of emergency medical services who experienced clinical practice at 5 universities were selected by convenience sampling methods. Differences in empowerment by general and major-related characteristics were evaluated using a t-test and analysis of variance. The association between satisfaction with clinical practice and empowerment was tested using correlation coefficients. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to investigate the factors associated with empowerment. Results: The levels of overall satisfaction with clinical practice and empowerment were 107.48 and 99.46, respectively. In simple analysis, empowerment level was associated with general characteristics, major-related characteristics, characteristics of clinical practice, and satisfaction with clinical practice. Empowerment level was significantly higher in older subjects (${\beta}=5.282$, p = .023), subjects with very good (${\beta}=8.487$, p = .002) or fair (${\beta}=4.879$, p = .010) subjective health status, and high subjective school record (${\beta}=5.837$, p = .008) in multiple linear regression analysis. Satisfaction with clinical practice was positively associated with empowerment (${\beta}=0.250$, p < .001). Conclusion: Empowerment was associated with major-related factors and satisfaction with clinical practice. Increased satisfaction with clinical practice could positively influence empowerment for paramedic students.

  • Resident participation or tenant empowerment is becoming an important concept of planning, provision of welfare services, and management of housing. It can be motivated by three variables: shared goals, shared values, and sense of community among residents. Theoretically, the more each of these three variables, the more likely people will be to participate. The purpose of this study was to identify the perception of management staff on residents' participation in public rental housing. For this, 198 management staff of public rental housing under Korea Housing Management were surveyed using questionnaire distributed by email during February 18 to 27, 2009. Only 33.3% of the public rental housing complexes surveyed constituted Residents Representative Committee. Most of the respondents showed negative perception of resident organizations and their roles as an meaningful way to communicate with them on the management system. Several ways to enhance the resident participation and to reduce housing and living cost burden of residents in public rental housing were suggested as follows: development and distribution of education and service program inspiring the residents' empowerment, enacting a provision of Tenants Representative obligation in Rental Housing Act, and so on.

Methodology: For this purpose, this study sampled 260 administrative staff working for the general hospitals in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. A total of 260 questionnaires were distributed to them, and 229 ones responded to the survey, which had been conducted from Mar. 9, through Mar. 30, 2018. 211 responses were used for the final analysis. The data collected were processed using the SPSS 18.0K for descriptive statistics, T-test, ANOVA and regression analysis. Findings: The results of this study can be summed up as follows. The empowerment of the subjects scored 3.73 on average on the 5-point scale. To be specific, the sub-factor 'meaning' scored the highest or 4.01, while the sub-factor 'impact' was lowest. Subjects' job satisfaction scored 3.37 and their organizational commitment scored 3.54 both on the 5-point scales. Practical Implications: Meaning and self determination of empowerment positively related to subjects' job satisfaction and organizational commitment, and particularly, meaning of empowerment was more strongly related. Hence, it is required of the general hospitals to operate a customized competence build-up program and educational courses on a continual basis. Besides, it would also be important to create a working environment wherein the administrative staff can demonstrate their deliberation, autonomy and independent services.

This study collected data from public organizations that are responsible for social welfare provision in Daegu, Gyeongsangbuk-Do, and Pusan in South Korea. This study employs confirmatory factor analysis in Amos 21 to find the discriminant validity of all constructs and regression analysis by Baron and Kenny (1986) to test that psychological empowerment is a mediator of the causal relationship between high-performance work system and organizational citizenship behavior. As the result of the analysis, psychological empowerment has a significant mediating effect on the relationship between high-performance work system and organizational citizenship behavior. The study suggests to the managers in social welfare organizations how they need to enhance organizational citizenship behavior through psychological empowerment themselves.

  • Purpose: This study has been conducted to develop and examine a health promotion empowerment program using a lay health leader for frail elderly. Methods: The research was organized in a nonequivalent control group pre-post test design. Data collection was performed from August 18 to October 8, 2015. The subjects included 76 frail elders aged over 65 registered in home visiting services (Experimental group=39, Control group=37). A health promotion empowerment program using a resident volunteer as a lay health leader was run for 8 weeks. Health factors (health promotion behavior, perceived health status and frailty) and empowerment factors (empowerment, social participation) were assessed. The data were analyzed by using the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. Results: After the program, health promotion behavior, perceived health status and social participation increased in the experimental group more significantly than in the control group, but frailty decreased in the experimental group greater than in the control group. Conclusion: The health promotion empowerment program using a resident volunteer as a lay health leader was effective. Therefore, the health promotion empowerment program needs to be expanded to other frail elders. Also, a health leader should be recommended as a public health resource and systematically managed.
