  • The purpose of the current study is to report a part of our larger project whose focus is to understand a relationship between students' units coordination and K-12 school mathematics. In particular, in this paper we report how students who exhibit distinct levels of units coordinations used their knowledge of proportion to solve quadratic function problems of the form y = ax2. To this end, three 7th grade students all of whom assimiliated whole number problem situations with three levels of units but showed different levels for fraction problems were chosen. We carried out clinical interviews not only to understand their ability to coordinate units but to understand their problem solving process of proportion and the quadratic function problems. The analysis suggest that their abilities to coordinate units influenced their ways to solving proportion problems, and in turn influenced their ways to solve the specific form of quadratic functions. We have finalized our study by discussing how students' ability to construct and coordinate units, their proportion knowledge, and their knowledge associated with expressing the specific type of quadractic functions could be related.

  • Students' mathematical thinking is represented via various forms of outcomes, such as written response and verbal expression, and teachers could infer and respond to their mathematical thinking by using them. This study analyzed 39 elementary teachers' competency to notice students' problem-solving strategies containing mathematical errors in fraction addition and subtraction with uncommon denominators problems. Participants were provided three types of students' problem-solving strategies with regard to fraction addition and subtraction problems and asked to identify and interpret students' mathematical understanding and errors represented in their artifacts. Moreover, participants were asked to design additional questions and problems to correct students' mathematical errors. The findings revealed that first, teachers' noticing competency was the highest on identifying, followed by interpreting and responding. Second, responding could be categorized according to the teachers' intentions and the types of problem, and it tended to focus on certain types of responding. For example, in giving questions responding type, checking the hypothesized error took the largest proportion, followed by checking the student's prior knowledge. Moreover, in posing problems responding type, posing problems related to student's prior knowledge with simple computation took the largest proportion. Based on these findings, we suggested implications for the teacher noticing research on students' artifacts.

  • It is necessary to understand the characteristics of each type of division problems in other to help students develop a rich understanding when they learn each type of division problems. This study focuses on a specific type of division problems; a quotitive division as finding a scale factor in enlargement context. First, this study investigated via survey how 4th-6th graders and preservice and inservice elementary teachers solved a quotitive division relating to scaling problem. And semi-structured interviews with preservice and inservice elementary teachers were conducted to explore what knowledge they brought when they tried to solve enlargement quotitive division problems. Most of participants solved the given quotitive division problem in the same way. Only a few preservice and inservice teachers interpreted it as a proportion problem and solved in a different way. From the interviews, it was found that different conceptions of context and decontextualization, and different conceptions of times (as repeated addition or as a multiplicative operator) were connected to different solutions. Finally, three issues relating to teaching enlargement quotitive division were discussed; visual representation of two solutions, conceptions connected each solution, and integrating quotitive division and proportion in math textbooks.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the types and characteristics of the Seventh Graders' proofs. Harel, & Sowder's proof schemes were used to analyze the subjects' responses. As a result of the study, there was a difference in the type of proof schemes used by the students depending on the academic achievement level. While the proportion of students using a transformative proof scheme decreased from the top to the bottom, the proportion of students using inductive (measure) proof scheme increased. In addition, features of each type of proof schemes were shown, such as using informal codes in the proof process, and dividing a given picture into a specific ratio in the problem. Based on this, we extracted four meaningful conclusions and discussed implications for proof teaching and learning.

  • This study analyzed the efficiency and influence factors according to the main research institute type of R&D Program for the local community problem-solving. This study applied data envelopment analysis (DEA) method and Tobit regression analysis by using 20 institutions that participated in R&D Program. The results are summarized as follows. First, Analysis results according to the research institute type of R&D project, Efficient DMUs showed more regional innovation institutions than social economy enterprises. But regional innovation institutions were the lowest in the CCR and BCC model. However, efficiency dose not differ between regional innovation institutions and social economy enterprises. Second, as a result of the analysis relation between efficiency and allocation characteristics of R&D input, the participation of regional innovation organizations as participating organizations has a negative effect on efficiency. It was found that the higher the proportion of government subsidies and the higher the employment rate of the vulnerable, which is a social achievement, the positive effect on efficiency. The implication of this study is that the participation of social economy enterprises as the main R&D institution and government R&D support can provide social economy enterprises with opportunities to accumulate R&D capabilities and experience successful commercialization.

  • Purpose: The small-scale environmental impact assessment system in Korea was introduced and implemented in August 2000, but it has a problem that it cannot guarantee implementation due to the large proportion of qualitative reduction measures for each evaluation item. Therefore, when preparing a small-scale environmental impact assessment, research was conducted on how to improve the existing simple listing-type reduction measures and qualitative evaluation standards to quantitative reduction measures and evaluation standards reflecting regional characteristics. Research design, data and methodology: The small-scale environmental impact assessment system in Korea was introduced and implemented in August 2000, but it has a problem that it cannot guarantee implementation due to the large proportion of qualitative reduction measures for each evaluation item. Therefore, when preparing a small-scale environmental impact assessment, research was conducted on how to improve the existing simple listing-type reduction measures and qualitative evaluation standards to quantitative reduction measures and evaluation standards reflecting regional characteristics. Results: As a result of the analysis of qualitative and quantitative factors, the arithmetic sum of the qualitative factors of the total six projects is 160, accounting for 80% of the total number of reduction measures, and the quantitative factors are 40, accounting for 20%. Among them, the number of qualitative reduction measures reached 97.4% for animal and plant items, and more than 90% for air quality, noise and vibration, and eco-friendly resource circulation items. Conclusions: Therefore, it is necessary to avoid establishing qualitative reduction measures and set quantitative measures as the basis, but to specify the specifications, size, and installation location related to the reduction measures, and to calculate the numerical reduction efficiency.
