In this paper we describe Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) using Petri nets, since Petri nets provide a powerful tool for modeling dynamical behavior of discrete concurrent processes. We deal with off-Line and on-Line rule-based scheduling of FMS. The role of the rule-base is to generate appropriate priority rule for resolving conflicts, that is, for selecting one of enabled transitions to be fired in a conflict set of the Petri nets. This corresponds to select a part type to be processed in the FMS. Towards developing more Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMS) we propose a conceptual framework of a futuristic intelligent scheduling system.

Distributed control systems(DCS) using fieldbus such as CAN have been applied to process systems but it is very difficult to design the DCS while guaranteeing the given end-to-end constraints such as precedence constraints, time constraints, and periods and priorities of tasks and messages. This paper presents a scheduling method to guarantee the given end-to-end constraints. The presented scheduling method is the integrated one considering both tasks executed in each node and messages transmitted via the network and is designed to be applied to a general DCS that has multiple loops with several types of constraints, where each loop consists of sensor nodes with multiple sensors, actuator nodes with multiple actuators and controller nodes with multiple tasks. An assignment method of the optimal period of each loop and a heuristic assignment rule of each message's priority are proposed and the integrated scheduling method is developed based on them.

This paper presents new scheduling heuristics, namely Mean Progressive Weighted Tardiness Estimator (MPWT) Heuristic Method and modified priority rules with sequence-dependent setup times consideration. These are designed to solve job shop scheduling problems with new performance measures - progressive weighted tardiness penalties. More realistic constraints, which are inter-machine overlapping sequence-dependent setup times, are considered. In real production environments, inter-machine overlapping sequence-dependent setups are significant. Therefore, modified scheduling generation algorithms of active and nondelay schedules for job shop problems with inter-machine overlapping sequence-dependent setup times are proposed in this paper. In addition, new customer-based measures of performance, which are total earliness and progressive weighted tardiness, and total progressive weighted tardiness, are proposed. The objective of the first experiment is to compare the proposed priority rules with the consideration of sequence-dependent setup times and the standard priority rules without setup times consideration. The results indicate that the proposed priority rules with setup times consideration are superior to the standard priority rules without the consideration of setup times. From the second experiment and the third experiment to compare the proposed MPWT heuristic approach with the efficient priority rules with setup times consideration, the MPWT heuristic method is significantly superior to the Batched Apparent Tardiness Cost with Sequence-dependent Setups (BATCS) rule, and other priority rules based on total earliness and progressive weighted tardiness, and total earliness and tardiness.

This paper addresses scheduling heuristics for an assembly job-shop that includes at least an assembly process throughout its processes. The assembly job shop has certain characteristics not only considering the precedence relationship between the processes but also considering the processing progress between the parts. In addition, it probably presents a different processing time for the same product according to the order of processes and the point of workable time, due to the difference in the availability of equipments. The paper proposes several priority-based dispatching rules that consider these characteristics of the assembly job-shop, aiming to minimize the total tardiness of products in the shop floor. Computational tests showed that job due date based priority rules significantly outperform existing priority rules in terms of total tardiness.

Up-to-date business environment for manufacturers is very complex and rapidly changing. In other words, companies are facing a variety of changes, such as diversifying customer requirements, shortening product life cycles, and switching to small quantity batch production. In this situation, the companies are introducing the concept of JIT (just-in-time) to solve the problem of on-time production and on-time delivery for survival. Though many companies have introduced ERP (enterprise resource planning) systems and MRP (material requirement planning) systems, the performance of these systems seems to fall short of expectations. In this paper, the case study on introducing an APS (advanced planning and scheduling) system based on dispatching rules to a machining company and on finding a method to establish an efficient production schedule is presented. The case company has trouble creating an effective production plan and schedule, even though it is equipped with an MRP-based ERP system. The APS system is applied to CNC (computer numerical control) machines, which are key machines of the case company. The overall progress of this research is as follows. First, we collect and analyze the master data on individual products and processes of the case company in order to build a production scheduling model. Second, we perform a pre-allocation simulation based on dispatching rules in order to calculate the priority of each order. Third, we perform a set of production simulations applying the priority value in order to evaluate production lead time and tardiness of pre-defined dispatching rules. Finally, we select the optimal dispatching rule suitable for work situation of the case company. As a result, an improved production schedule leads to an increase in production and reduced production lead time.

Team orienteering, an extension of single-competitor orienteering, is the problem of determining multiple paths from a starting node to a finishing node for a given allowed time or distance limit fixed for each of the paths with the objective of maximizing the total collected score. Each path is through a subset of nodes, each of which has an associated score. The team orienteering problem has many applications such as home fuel delivery, college football players recruiting, service technicians scheduling, military operations, etc. Unlike existing optimal and heuristic algorithms often leading to heavy computation, this paper suggests two types of priority rule based heuristics-serial and parallel ones-that are especially suitable for practically large-sized problems. In the proposed heuristics, all nodes are listed in an order using a priority rule and then the paths are constructed according to this order. To show the performances of the heuristics, computational experiments were done on the small-to-medium sized benchmark instances and randomly generated large sized test instances, and the results show that some of the heuristics give reasonable quality solutions within very short computation time.

This paper focuses on the problem of scheduling wafer lots with limited waiting times between pairs of consecutive operations in a semiconductor wafer fabrication facility. For the problem of minimizing total tardiness of orders, we develop a priority rule based scheduling method in which a scheduling decision for an operation is made based on the states of workstations for the operation and its successor or predecessor operation. To evaluate performance of the suggested scheduling method, we perform simulation experiments using real factory data as well as randomly generated data sets. Results of the simulation experiments show that the suggested method performs better than a method suggested in other research and the one that has been used in practice.

This paper suggests a decision tree based approach for flexible job shop scheduling with multiple process plans. The problem is to determine the operation/machine pairs and the sequence of the jobs assigned to each machine. Two decision tree based scheduling mechanisms are developed for static and dynamic flexible job shops. In the static case, all jobs are given in advance and the decision tree is used to select a priority dispatching rule to process all the jobs. Also, in the dynamic case, the jobs arrive over time and the decision tree, updated regularly, is used to select a priority rule in real-time according to a rescheduling strategy. The two decision tree based mechanisms were applied to a flexible job shop case with reconfigurable manufacturing cells and a conventional job shop, and the results are reported for various system performance measures.
