  • Since Jiuzhang Suanshu, mathematical structures in the traditional East Asian mathematics have been revealed by practical problems. Since then, polynomial equations are mostly the type of $p(x)=a_0$ where p(x) has no constant term and $a_0$ is a positive number. This restriction for the polynomial equations hinders the systematic development of theory of equations. Since tianyuanshu (天元術) was introduced in the 11th century, the polynomial equations took the form of p(x) = 0, but it was not universally adopted. In the mean time, East Asian mathematicians were occupied by kaifangfa so that the concept of zeros of polynomials was not materialized. We also show that Suanxue Qimeng inflicted distinct developments of the theory of equations in three countries of East Asia.

  • A variety of practical problems can be addressed in the framework of rotation (successive) sampling. The present work presents a sample rotation pattern where sampling units are drawn on two successive occasions. The problem of estimation of population variance on current (second) occasion in two - occasion successive (rotation) sampling has been considered. A class of estimators has been proposed for population variance that includes many estimators as a particular case. Asymptotic properties of the proposed class of estimators are discussed. The proposed class of estimators is compared with the sample variance estimator when there is no matching from the previous occasion. Optimum replacement policy is discussed. Results are supported with the empirical means of comparison.

  • The regularized structured total least norm (RSTLN) method finds an approximate solution x and error matrix E to the overdetermined linear system (H + E)x $\approx$ b, preserving structure of H. A new separation scheme by parts of variables for the regularized structured total least norm on blind deconvolution problem is suggested. A method combining the regularized structured total least norm method with a separation by parts of variables can be obtain a better approximated solution and a smaller residual. Computational results for the practical problem with Block Toeplitz with Toeplitz Block structure show the new method ensures more efficiency on image restoration.

  • The algorithmic idea has been a kind of necessary mathematics quality for modern people in this information society. In China the algorithm was represented fully as one of the new mathematics contents in the secondary level for the first time when The Standards of Mathematics Curriculum for the Senior High School was promulgated in 2003, so the research about the teaching algorithm undoubtedly has its practical implications for mathematics education. In this paper, with the conceptual framework of The Mathematics Task Framework as the research tool, an algorithmic teaching case based on LOGO software was introduced in detail, and data by ways of observations, interviews and worksheets were collected, then the case was analyzed. The results showed that the teaching of algorithm is feasible and effective in the LOGO environment. Some beneficial implications about the instructional design of algorithm were also discussed.

  • In this study, we tried to devise a method to activate meta-affect in the aspect of supporting mathematics teaching and learning according to the need to find specific strategies and teaching and learning methods to activate learners' meta-affect in mathematics subjects, which are highly influenced by psychological factors. To this end, the definitional and conceptual elements of meta-affect which are the basis of this study, were identified from previous studies. Reflecting these factors, a teaching and learning model that activates meta-affect was devised, and a meta-affect activation strategy applied in the model was constructed. The mathematics teaching and learning model that activates meta-affect developed in this study was refined by verifying its suitability and convenience in the field through expert advice and application of actual mathematics classes. The developed model is meaningful in that it proposed a variety of practical teaching and learning methods that activate the meta-affect of learners in a mathematical learning situation.

  • In this paper, our primary focus revolves around the examination of a set of fractional stochastic models. Through our investigation, we can establish the presence of a solution and its distinctiveness. Additionally, we employ a moment-based algorithm to estimate the coefficients within these models and provide evidence that these estimations maintain their asymptotic characteristics. To support this claim, we conduct experimental studies using simulations and numerical examples.

  • To predict the fate of groundwater contaminants, accurate spatially continuous information is needed. Because most field sampling of groundwater contaminants are not conducted spatially continuous manner, a special estimation technique is required to interpolate/extrapolate concentration distributions at unmeasured locations. A practical three-dimensional estimations method for in situ groundwater contaminant concentrations is introduced. It consistas of two general steps: estimation of macroscopic transport process and kriging. Using field data and nonlinear optimization techniques, the macroscopic behavior of the contaminant plume is estimated. A spatial distribution of residuals is obtained by subtracting the macroscopic transport portion from field data, then kriging is applied to estimate residuals at unsampled locations. To reduce outlier effects on obtaining correlations between residual data which are needed for determining variougram models, the R(sub)p-estimator is introduced. The proposed estimation method is applied to a field data set.

  • The rule of the game of Chomp is simple and the existence of a winning strategy can easily be proved. However, the existence tells us nothing about what strategies are winning in reality. Like in Chess or Baduk, many researchers studied the winning moves using computer programs, but no general patterns for the winning actions have not been found. In the paper, we aim to construct practical winning strategies based on backward induction. To do this we develop how to analyze Chomp and prove and find the winning strategies of the simple games of Chomp.

  • Dutch mathematician Simon Stevin published De Thiende(The Tenth) in 1583. In that book Stevin suggested new numerical notation which could express all numbers. That new notation was decimal fraction system. In this article I will argue that Stevin invented new decimal fraction system with two main purposes. The explicit purpose was to invent a new system which could be used easily by practical mathematicians. The implicit purpose which cannot be found in De Thiende alone but in his other writings was to break the Aristotelian tradition which separated geometry and arithmetic which dealt continuous magnitude and discrete numbers respectively.

  • Formally p$\rightarrow$q means that affirming p one implicitly affirms q and that denying q one implicitly denies p. Denying p or affirming q do not lead to certain conclusions. Middle school students can recognize practical implication p$\rightarrow$q is true whenever p is false, but they don't recognize theoretical implication p$\rightarrow$q is true whenever p is false. They have not assimilated intuitively the complete structure of implication. Thus they do not distinguish naturally between the uncertain conclusion which can be drawn by affirming p and the certain rejection of p which follows from the negation of q. Also they can not recognize the uncertain conclusion which can be drawn by negation of p. There is no significant difference between practical conditional statements, formal conditional statements and conditional Inferences in advanced mathematics students. But there is a significant difference between formal conditional inferences and specific conditional inferences with statement p$\rightarrow$q is true when p is false.
