  • The effect of sublimable vehicle composition in the camphor-naphthalene system on the pore structure of porous Cu-Ni alloy is investigated. The CuO-NiO mixed slurries with hypoeutectic, eutectic and hypereutectic compositions are frozen into a mold at $-25^{\circ}C$. Pores are generated by sublimation of the vehicles at room temperature. After hydrogen reduction at $300^{\circ}C$ and sintering at $850^{\circ}C$ for 1 h, the green body of CuO-NiO is completely converted to porous Cu-Ni alloy with various pore structures. The sintered samples show large pores which are aligned parallel to the sublimable vehicle growth direction. The pore size and porosity decrease with increase in powder content due to the degree of powder rearrangement in slurry. In the hypoeutectic composition slurry, small pores with dendritic morphology are observed in the sintered Cu-Ni, whereas the specimen of hypereutectic composition shows pore structure of plate shape. The change of pore structure is explained by growth behavior of primary camphor and naphthalene crystals during solidification of camphor-naphthalene alloys.

  • In this study, we investigate the effect of porous $Al_2O_3$ substrate on the strengths of asymmetric structures after we prepare such a structure consisting of a dense $Li_2ZrO_3$ top layer and porous $Al_2O_3$ substrate layer. The porosity and elastic modulus of the substrate layer are controlled by sintering temperature, which has three values of 1150, 1250 and $1350^{\circ}C$. The porosity is controlled in the range of ~ 30-50 vol%, elastic modulus is ~80-120 GPa and elastic mismatch $E_s/E_c$ is ~ 0.6-1.0. Indentation stress-strain curves are obtained and analyzed to evaluate the yield stress of the asymmetric structure by concentrated local loading of WC balls. Conventional flexural strengths are also obtained to evaluate the strength of the asymmetric structure. The results indicate that the local yield strength of the asymmetric structure has mid-values between the top and the substrate layer; however, the flexural strength of the asymmetric structure are mainly influenced by elastic modulus and strength of the substrate.

  • Porous silicon materials have been shown to have bright prospects for applications in light emitting, solar cell, as well as light- and chemical-sensing devices. In this report, structures of porous silicon prepared by anodic etching in HF-based solution with various etching times were studied in detail by Atomic Force Microscopy and Small Angle X -ray Scattering technique using the high energy beam line at Pohang Light Source in Korea. The results showed the coexistence of the various pores with nanometer and submicrometer scales. For nanameter size pores, the mixed ones with two different shapes were identified: the larger ones in cylindrical shape and the smaller ones in spherical shape. Volume fractions of the cylindrical and the spherical pores were about equal and remained unchanged at all etching times investigated. On the whole uniform values of the specific surface area and of the size parameters of the pores were observed except for the larger specific surface area for the sample with the short etching time. The results implies that etching process causes the inner surfaces to become smoother while new pores are being generated. In all SAXS data at large Q vectors, Porod slope of -4 was observed, which supports the fact that the pores have smooth surfaces.

  • In the present study, vibration analysis of double bonded micro sandwich cylindrical shells with saturated porous core and carbon/boron nitride nanotubes (CNT/BNNT) reinforced composite face sheets under multi-physical loadings based on Cooper-Naghdi theory is investigated. The material properties of the micro structure are assumed to be temperature dependent, and each of the micro-tubes is placed on the Pasternak elastic foundations, and mechanical, moisture, thermal, electrical, and magnetic forces are effective on the structural behavior. The distributions of porous materials in three distributions such as non-linear non-symmetric, nonlinear-symmetric, and uniform are considered. The relationship including electro-magneto-hydro-thermo-mechanical loadings based on modified couple stress theory is obtained and moreover the governing equations of motion using the energy method and the Hamilton's principle are derived. Also, Navier's type solution is also used to solve the governing equations of motion. The effects of various parameters such as material length scale parameter, temperature change, various distributions of nanotube, volume fraction of nanotubes, porosity and Skempton coefficients, and geometric parameters on the natural frequency of double bonded micro sandwich cylindrical shells are investigated. Increasing the porosity and the Skempton coefficients of the core in micro sandwich cylindrical shell lead to increase the natural frequency of the structure. Cylindrical shells and porous materials in the industry of filters and separators, heat exchangers and coolers are widely used and are generally accepted today.

  • In this work, lightweight sandwich plates consisting of a functionally graded porous (FGP) core and two laminated composite face sheets resting on elastic foundation have been proposed. Three different profiles are considered for the distributions of porosities along core thickness. The main aim of this paper is the investigation of the buckling behavior of the proposed porous sandwich plates (PSPs) by reporting their critical mechanical loads and their corresponding mode shapes. A finite element method (FEM) based on first order shear deformation theories (FSDT) is developed to discretize governing equations for the buckling behavior of the proposed sandwich plates. The effects of porosity dispersion and volume, the numbers and angles of laminated layers, sandwich plate geometrical dimensions, elastic foundation coefficients, loading and boundary conditions are studied. The results show that the use of FGP core can offer a PSP with half weight core and only 5% reduction in critical buckling loads. Moreover, stacking sequences with only ${\pm}45$ orientation fibers offer the highest values of buckling loads.

  • We in this paper study nonlinear bending of a functionally graded porous nanobeam subjected to multiple physical load based on the nonlocal strain gradient theory. For more reasonable analysis of nanobeams made of porous functionally graded magneto-thermo-electro-elastic materials (PFGMTEEMs), both constituent materials and the porosity appear gradient distribution in the present expression of effective material properties, which is much more suitable to the actual compared with the conventional expression of effective material properties. Besides the displacement function regarding physical neutral surface is introduced to analyze mechanical behaviors of beams made of FGMs. Then we derive nonlinear governing equations of PFGMTEEMs beams using the principle of Hamilton. To obtain analytical solutions, a two-step perturbation method is developed in nonuniform electric field and magnetic field, and then we use it to solve nonlinear equations. Finally, the analytical solutions are utilized to perform a parametric analysis, where the effect of various physical parameters on static bending deformation of nanobeams are studied in detail, such as the nonlocal parameter, strain gradient parameter, the ratio of nonlocal parameter to strain gradient parameter, porosity volume fraction, material volume fraction index, temperature, initial magnetic potentials and external electric potentials.

  • This article present the free vibration analysis of simply supported perfect and imperfect (porous) FG beams using a high order trigonometric deformation theory. It is assumed that the material properties of the porous beam vary across the thickness. Unlike other theories, the number of unknown is only three. This theory has a parabolic shear deformation distribution across the thickness. So it is useless to use the shear correction factors. The Hamilton's principle will be used herein to determine the equations of motion. Since, the beams are simply supported the Navier's procedure will be retained. To show the precision of this model, several comparisons have been made between the present results and those of existing theories in the literature.

  • In this research, the buckling and free vibration of three-phase carbon nanotubes/ fiber/ polymer piezoelectric nanocomposite face sheet sandwich microbeam with microsensor and micro-actuator surrounded in elastic foundation based on modified couple stress theory (MCST) is investigated. Three types of porous materials are considered for sandwich core. Higher order (Reddy) and sinusoidal shear deformation beam theories are employed for the displacement fields. Sinusoidal surface stress effects are extracted for sinusoidal shear deformation beam theory. The equations of motion are derived by Hamilton's principle and then the natural frequency and critical buckling load are obtained by Navier's type solution. The determined results are in good agreement with other literatures. The detailed numerical investigation for various parameters is performed for this microsensor-microactuator. The results reveal that the microsensor-microactuator enhanced by increasing of Skempton coefficient, carbon nanotubes diameter length to thickness ratio, small scale factor, elastic foundation, surface stress constants and reduction in porous coefficient, micro-actuator voltage and CNT weight fraction. The valuable results can be expedient for micro-electro-mechanical (MEMS) and nano-electro-mechanical (NEMS) systems.

  • The functionally graded (FG) porous plates are usually characterized by the non-symmetric elastic modulus distribution through the thickness so that the plate neutral surface does not coincide with the mid-surface. Nevertheless, the conventional analysis models were mostly based on the plate mid-surface so that the accuracy of resulting numerical results is questionable. In this context, this paper presents the neutral surface-based static and free vibration analysis of FG porous plates and investigates the differences between the mid- and neutral surface-based analysis models. The neutral surface-based numerical method is formulated using the (3,3,2) hierarchical model and approximated by the last introduced natural element method (NEM). The volume fractions of metal and ceramic are expressed by the power-law function and the cosine-type porosity distributions are considered. The proposed numerical method is demonstrated through the benchmark experiment, and the differences between two analysis models are parametrically investigated with respect to the thickness-wise material and porosity distributions. It is found from the numerical results that the difference cannot be negligible when the material and porosity distributions are remarkably biased in the thickness direction.
