  • NiO-YSZ anode-supported single cell was prepared by spin-coating YSZ and LSM slurries as electrolyte and cathode, respectively. Dense YSZ electrolyte film was successfully prepared on the porous NiO-YSZ anode substrate by tuning pre-sintering temperature of NiO-YSZ and co-firing temperature. The thickness of YSZ film was controlled by the solid content of slurry and coating cycles. The experimental conditions affecting on the thickness of YSZ film was discussed. Single cells with the active electrode area ${\sim}0.8\;cm^2$ were prepared by spin-coating the cathode layers of LSM-YSZ mixture and LSM consequently as well. The effects of the pre-sintering temperature and thus the microstructure of NiO-YSZ substrate on the current-voltage characteristics of co-fired cell were investigated.

  • Ni-ceria cermets have been extensively investigated as candidates for the anode in intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells. We have used the citric method to synthesize nanocomposite powders consisting of NiO (Ni metal content: $40{\sim}60%$ by volume) highly dispersed in $Ce_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}O_{1.95}$ (CGO). The microstructure characteristics and sintering behaviors of the nanocomposites were investigated. No impurity phases were observed and the shrinkage of these substrates matched well with that of a CGO electrolyte with a specific surface area of $11\;m^2/g$. Densification of the CGO electrolyte layer to $<5\;{\mu}m$ thickness was achieved by co-firing the laminated electrolyte with the porous NiO-CGO substrate at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 6 h.

  • This paper presents an atmospheric microplasma-jet device for bio~medical application. The microplasma-jet device consists of four components; a thin Ni anode, porous alumina insulator, a stainless steel cathode and an aluminum case. The anode has 8 holes, and hole diameter and depth are $200 {\mu}m$ and $60 {\mu}m$, respectively. The discharge test was performed in atmospheric pressure using nitrogen gas and AC voltage at the optimum gas flow rate of 4 Vmin. The plasma-jet is ejected stably for the input voltage ranging from 5.5 to $9.5 kV_{p-p}$. The plasma becomes dense as the input voltage increases, which was verified by the hydrophilicity change of PMMA surface treated by the plasma. The temperature increasement of the aluminum film exposed to plasma-jet illustrates that the micro plasma-jet device is feasible for bio-medical application.

  • MAO (micro-arc oxidation) is an eco-friendly convenient and effective technology to deposit high-quality oxide coatings on the surfaces of Ti, Al, Mg and their alloys. The roles of the electrolyte concentration and relative cathode electrode area sizes in the grown oxide film during titanium MAO were investigated. The higher the concentration of the electrolyte, the lower the $R_{total}A$ value. The oxide film produced by the lower concentration of the electrolyte is thinner and less uniform than the film by the higher concentration, which is thick and porous. The cathode area size must be bigger than the anode area size in order to minimize the voltage drop across the cathode. The ratio of the cathode area size to the anode area size must be bigger than 8. Otherwise, the cathode will be another source for voltage drop, which is detrimental to and slows down the oxide growth.

  • Silica/SUS composite membranes were prepared for CO removal from products of methanol steam reforming. A support was prepared by coating Ni powder of sub-micron and SiO$_2$ sols of particle size of 500nm and 150nm in turns on a porous stainless steel (SUS) substrate. Silica top layer was coated on the modified support using colloidal sol with nanoparticle. As a result of mixture gas permeation test of silica composite membrane using H$_2$(99%)/CO(1%), CO concentration of 10000 ppm was reduced to under 81 ppm, which is acceptable in PEMFC anode gas specification. Permeation mechanism through the membrane was mainly molecular sieving.

  • $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ is a promising next-generation anode material for lithium-ion batteries due to excellent cycle life, low irreversible capacity, and little volume expansion during charge-discharge process. However, it has poor charge capacity at high current density due to its low electrical conductivity. To improve this weakness, porous $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ was synthesized by sol-gel method with P123 as chelating agent. The physical characteristics of as-prepared sample was investigated by XRD, SEM, and BET analysis, and electrochemical properties were characterized by cycle performance test, cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ synthesized by 0.01mol ratio of P123/Ti showed most unified particle size, high specific surface area, and relatively high porosity. EIS analysis showed that depressed semicircle size was remarkably reduced, which suggested resistance value in electrode was decreased. Capacity in rate performance showed 178 mAh/g at 0.2C, 170 mAh/g at 0.5C, 110 mA/h at 5C, and 90 mAh/g at 10C. Capacity retention also showed 99% after rate performance.

  • Ceramic powder, such as MgO, is added as a binder to prepare the green compacts of molten salts of an electrolyte for a thermal battery. Despite the addition of a binder, when the thickness of the electrolyte decreases to improve the battery performance, the problem with the unintentional short circuit between the anode and cathode still remains. To improve the current powder molding method, a new type of electrolyte separator with porous MgO preforms is prepared and characteristics of the thermal battery are evaluated. A Spherical PMMA polymer powder is added as a pore-forming agent in the MgO powder, and an organic binder is used to prepare slurry appropriate for tape casting. A porous MgO preform with $300{\mu}m$ thickness is prepared through a binder burnout and sintering process. The particle size of the starting MgO powder has an effect, not on the porosity of the porous MgO preform, but on the battery characteristics. The porosity of the porous MgO preforms is controlled from 60 to 75% using a pore-forming agent. The batteries prepared using various porosities of preforms show a performance equal to or higher than that of the pellet-shaped battery prepared by the conventional powder molding method.

  • Hierarchically porous $Fe_2O_3$ nanofibers with meso- and macro- pores are designed and synthesized by electrospinning and subsequent heat-treatment. The macro pores are generated by selectively decomposition of polystyrene as a dispersed phase in the as-spun fibers containing $Fe(acac)_3$/polyacrylonitrile continuous phases during heat-treatment. Additionally, meso-pores formed by evaporation of infiltrated water vapor during electrospinning process interconnected the macro-pores and results in the formation of hierarchically porous $Fe_2O_3$ nanofibers. The initial discharge capacity and Coulombic efficiency of the hierarchically porous $Fe_2O_3$ nanofibers at a current density of $1.0A\;g^{-1}$ are $1190mA\;h\;g^{-1}$ and 79.2%. Additionally, the discharge capacity of the nanofibers is $792mA\;h\;g^{-1}$ after 1,000 cycles. The high structural stability and morphological benefits of the hierarchically porous $Fe_2O_3$ nanofibers resulted in superior lithium ion storage performance.
