A Population Viability Analysis (PVA) for Re-introduction of the Oriental White Stork (Ciconia boyciana) in Korea

  • The Oriental White Stork (Ciconia boyciana) is a representative wetland species distributed across East Asia. The species has been declined to face the threat of species extinctions with estimation of at about 3000 individuals. In order to re-introduce the endangered storks in the field, we developed a baseline model using the program VORTEX, performed sensitivity test, and finally suggested an ideal model based on results of the sensitivity test. The baseline model predicted 12.5% extinction probability with mean time to first extinction of 82.0 year. Sensitivity test revealed that two demographic variables (first-year mortality and percent of adult female breeding) had the greatest impacts on population persistence. Thus, corrected model improved the population persistence, where the extinction probability decreased to 1.0% in 100 years by changing values of two variables within a range of applicable to the population. Our models for stork re-introduction suggest this population will be stable by improving first-year mortality and adult female fecundity.

Estimation of Cut-off Stratum in the Highly Skewed Population (왜도가 심한 모집단의 절사층 추정)

  • In business survey, cut-off sampling is usual, The contribution from cut-off part of the population is at least small in comparison with the remaining population. In this case, part of the target population is excluded from the selection and parameter estimations are only based on Take-all and Take-some stratum. It may be tempting not to use resources on enterprises that contribute little to the overall results of the survey. And this reduces the response burden for these small enterprises. But, the size of cut-off stratum has been increased as a way to manage reduced budgets. This leads to additional bias. In this study, the population have been separated as three stratum, cut -off, take-some, take-all, and we will estimate cut-off part using auxiliary variable.

Length based estimation population numbers of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) stock in Lake Hayq, Ethiopia

  • The study was conducted at Lake Hayq, one of the lakes of Wollo, Ethiopia. Data were collected at the landing sites for 365 days (June 8, 2022 to June 7, 2023). The basic information gathered in the fishing part of the Lake was Nile tilapia caught by fishermen, the total number of tilapia and the increase in fishing effort. The aim of the research was to estimate the size of the Nile tilapia population and the fishing mortality rate in length groups for Nile tilapia stocks occurring in the lake. A Jones length-based cohort analysis model was used to estimate Nile tilapia population. The estimated Nile tilapia population was over 46.8 Million tilapia per year. The model estimates that more than 13.3 million 8-10 cm Nile tilapia are caught in fisheries each year.

  • In this study, the adequacy of water supply critical factors of urban design was examined. The supply of water supply is analyzed in various ways as the design progresses. Starting with basic data collection and analysis a supply and demand plan is established to calculate the amount of water supply and in this study the adequacy of population estimation and original unit calculation was evaluated. Among the second new cities where actual data can be secured Wirye New Town was selected as the study target area. Related data were analyzed to confirm the future population and the original unit and compared with the measured data. As of September 2020, the population of Wirye New Town was 93,977, showing the appropriateness of about 84% with a planned population of 110,990 confirming that the planned population and the actual population were almost similar. In the case of the original unit, it was calculated as 314 liters per person in Seoul and 320 liters per person in Seongnam at the time of design. As a result, it was found that there was some agreement in the population estimation while examining the supply in the planned city. In the case of Korea, there is a lot of interest in revitalizing the existing city, away from continuous development. Therefore it is judged that there is a need for further research on the adequacy of supply for the old city center.

Multivariate analysis of longitudinal surveys for population median

  • This article explores the analysis of longitudinal surveys in which same units are investigated on several occasions. Multivariate exponential ratio type estimator has been proposed for the estimation of the finite population median at the current occasion in two occasion longitudinal surveys. Information on several additional auxiliary variables, which are stable over time and readily available on both the occasions, has been utilized. Properties of the proposed multivariate estimator, including the optimum replacement strategy, are presented. The proposed multivariate estimator is compared with the sample median estimator when there is no matching from a previous occasion and with the exponential ratio type estimator in successive sampling when information is available on only one additional auxiliary variable. The merits of the proposed estimator are justified by empirical interpretations and validated by a simulation study with the help of some natural populations.

On the Spectral Shape of Non-recycled γ-ray Pulsars

  • More than 100 γ−ray pulsars have been discovered by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. With a significantly enlarged sample size, it is possible to compare the properties of different classes. Radio-quiet (RQ) γ−ray pulsars form a distinct population, and various studies have shown that the properties of the RQ population can be intrinsically different from those of radio-loud (RL) pulsars. Utilizing these differences, it is possible to further classify the pulsar-like unidentified γ−ray sources into sub-groups. In this study, we suggest the possibility of distinguishing RQ/RL pulsars by their spectral shape. We compute the probabilities of a pulsar to be RQ or RL for a given spectral curvature. This can provide a key to the estimation of the intrinsic fraction of radio-quietness in the γ−ray pulsar population, which can place a tight constraint on the emission geometry.

  • Recently the interval estimation of binomial proportions is revisited in various literatures. This is mainly due to the erratic behavior of the coverage probability of the well-known Wald confidence interval. Various alternatives have been proposed. Among them, the Agresti-Coull confidence interval, the Wilson confidence interval and the Bayes confidence interval resulting from the noninformative Jefferys prior were recommended by Brown et al. (2001). However, unlike the binomial distribution case, little is known about the properties of the confidence intervals in finite population sampling. In this note, the property of confidence intervals is investigated in anile population sampling.

  • This paper proposes a method of estimating the lifetime distribution at use condition for constant stress accelerated life tests when an infant-mortality failure mode as well as wear-out one exists. General limited failure population model is introduced to describe these failure modes. It is assumed that the log lifetime of each failure mode follows a location-scale distribution and a linear relation exists between the location parameter and the stress. An estimation procedure using the expectation and maximization algorithm is proposed. Specific formulas for Weibull distribution are obtained. An illustrative example and the simulation results are given.

  • In order to improve sensing performance when the noise variance is not known, this paper considers a so-called blind spectrum sensing technique that is based on eigenvalue models. In this paper, we employed the spiked population models in order to identify the miss detection probability. At first, we try to estimate the unknown noise variance based on the blind measurements at a secondary location. We then investigate the performance of detection, in terms of both theoretical and empirical aspects, after applying this estimated noise variance result. In addition, we study the effects of the number of SUs and the number of samples on the spectrum sensing performance.

  • The purpose of this research is to provide more reliable water unit factors of domestic airports by investigating of general informations related to the domestic airport. The informations of domestic airports such as passengers, settled population of airports, building areas and water amount are investigated to estimate the unit factor of water of domestic airports. The domestic airports are divided into three type such as central airport, position airport and general airport. Through analysis of relationship between water amount and the others, the unit factor of water could be calculated. The water amount of central airport as Incheon international airport and position airports could be estimated by unit factor of settled population. The others could be estimated by unit factor of building area.
