This study proposes a method of an equivalent bell model in order to tune the beat period of a Korean bell. In a Korean bell having a slight asymmetry, each circumferential mode splits into a mode pair which has a slight difference in frequency, and the interaction of the mode pair makes a beat in vibration and sound. An equivalent bell model which consists of an axi-symmetric bell and an equivalent point mass, has the same mode property as in a real bell. The equivalent bell model is constructed by the finite element analysis based upon the theory of a revolutionary shell Using the equivalent bell model, the beat period is predicted when the bell thickness is locally decreased to improve the beat property. The predicted result is verified by experiment on a test bell. The proposed method is useful to save the time required for tuning the beat period of a large bell.
This paper attempts to approximate the distribution function for the number of innovation activities (NIA). To this end, the dataset of 2002 Korean Innovation Survey (KIS 2002) published by Science and Technology Policy Institute is used. To deal with zero NTI values given by a considerable number of firms in the KIS 2002 survey, a mixture model of distributions for NIA is applied. The NIA is specified as a mixture of two distributions, one with a point mass at zero and the other with full support on the positive half of the real line. The model was empirically verified for the KIS 2002 data. The mixture model can easily capture the common bimodality feature of the NIA distribution. In addition, when covariates were added to the mixture model, it was found that the probability that a firm has zero NIA significantly varies with some variables.
This paper presents a new method for including the dynamic stiffness of the stationary parts in rotordynamic analysis. As a consequence of the support dynamics, critical speeds are varied and/or additional critical speeds are introduced. Therefore, dynamic effects of the support are often significant in high speed turbomachinery, but most of analysis has considered the support as a rigid body or a simple structure. The proposed method is based on the coupled characteristics of the driving point and transfer frequency response functions of the support system to model the equivalent spring-mass series in finite element analysis. To demonstrate the applicability of the simulation procedures provided, it is applied to the rotor model of the double suction centrifugal pump. Results of the suggested equivalent-support rotor model including coupled effects agree well with the entire pump model.
Interdiffusion between two partially miscible polymers of similar chemical structures with different molecular weights is characterized theoretically by using the reptation model for the interdiffusion. This model provides more reliable results than the early Rouse model for same molecular weights, compared with the experiments. Furthermore, by introducing the molecular weight ratio R into the reptation model, we can see the dynamic effect of molecular weight on the diffusion behaviors of the asymmetric system. Near the critical point the diffusion behaviors of asymmetric binary polymer mixtures are well characterized by the interfacial width W(t), the mass transport M(t) for the different values of the Flory Χ parameter and different molecular weight ratios ofpolymers of the diffusion couple. These two quantities and composition profiles by this model give betteragreement with experiments.
A laboratory experiment using artificial fracture rocks was used to understand the 3-dimensional dispersion of a tracer and the mixing process in a fractured network. In this experiment, 12cm polystyrene foam cubes with two electrodes for monitoring electric conductivity (EC) were used as artificial fractured rocks. Distilled water with 0.5mS/m was used as a tracer in water with 35mS/m and the difference of EC between the tracer and the water was monitored by a multipoint simultaneous measurement system of electrical resistance. The results showed that even if the fracture arrangement pattern was not straight in the direction of the flow, the tracer did not diffuse along individual fractures and an oval tracer plume, which was the distribution of tracer concentrations, tended to be form in the direction of the flow. The vertical cross section of the tracer distribution showed small diffusivity in the vertical direction. The calculated total tracer volume passing through each measurement point in the horizontal cross section showed while that the solute passed through measurement points near the direction of hydraulic gradient and in other directions, the passed tracer volumes were small. Using Peclet number as a criterion, it was found that the mass distribution at the fracture intersection was controlled in the stage of transition between the complete mixing model and the streamline routing model.

In general, almost information is stored in only a few wavelet coefficients. This sparse characteristic of wavelet coefficient can be modeled by the mixture of Gaussian probability density function and point mass at zero, and denoising for this prior model is peformed by using Bayesian estimation. In this paper, we propose a method of parameter estimation for denoising using hypothesis-testing problem. Hypothesis-testing problem is applied to variance of wavelet coefficient, and $X^2$-test is used. Simulation results show our method outperforms about 0.3dB higher PSNR(peak signal-to-noise ratio) gains compared to the states-of-art denoising methods when using orthogonal wavelets.
This paper proposes an extended service filtering technique to prevent overload in service control point (SCP) due to televoting (VOT) or mass calling (MAS) services with the heavy traffic characteristics. Also, this paper compares this extended technique with the existing overload control techniques, and calculates steady state call blocking probabilities in intelligent network (IN) under overload conditions. The proposed technique considers SCP overload and IN Capability Set (CS)-1 services (such as VOT or MAS service) that have to use the specialized resources of intelligent peripheral (IP). This technique uses first an activating step in which SCP requests service filtering to service switching point (SSP). Then, in the filtering step, SSP sends filtering results to SCP periodically or each N-calls. Also, when filtering time-out expires, SSP stops service filtering, and sends service filtering response to SCP in the deactivating step. This paper applies this technique to VOT/MAS service, and calculates SCP and SSP-IP (circuit) call blocking probabilities by using an analytical VOT/MAS service model. With the modeling and analyzing of this new technique, it shows that this technique reduces the traffic flow into SCP from SSP and IP prominently.
The paper presents a new approach for the analysis of slope stability that is based on the numerical solution of a differential equation, which describes the thrust force distribution within the potential sliding mass. It is based on the evaluation of the thrust force value at the endpoint of the slip line. A coupled approximation of the slip and thrust lines is applied. The model is based on subdivision of the sliding mass into slices that are normal to the slip line and the equilibrium differential equation is obtained as the slice width approaches zero. Opposed to common iterative limit equilibrium procedures the present method is straightforward and gives an estimate of slope stability at the value of the safety factor prescribed in advance by standard requirements. Considering the location of the thrust line within the soil mass above the trial slip line eliminates the possible development of a tensile thrust force in the stable and critical states of the slope. The location of the upper boundary point of the thrust line is determined by the equilibrium of the upper triangular slice. The method can be applied to any smooth shape of a slip line, i.e., to a slip line without break points. An approximation of the slip and thrust lines by quadratic parabolas is used in the numerical examples for a series of slopes.

The physical characteristics of suspended solid in urban watersheds are estimated and are described the accumulation processes on the urban surface. And build up the accumulation model which has two parameters and three constants. Two parameters are $p_0\;and\;p_{max'}$, and three constants are landuse, clean and traffic constant. Suggested model is applied three industry watershed which has variable area. And simulated results are compared with observed data. The model estimates the real phenomenon and the results are pretty good. The simulated accumulation mass are 1.20, 0.96 and $2.88g/m^2$. The differences of simulation and observation data are about 30%.

This study proposes an equivalent bell model for the Sacred Bell of the Great King Seongdeok An equivalent bell model bas the modal property of the real bell and it consists of an axi-symmetric bell body and a point mass, The bell model is constructed by the finite element analysis based upon the theory of a revolutionary shell. Using the equivalent bell model. the beat period can be controlled by decreasing the thickness of local area. This study aims at showing a beat period control method for a large bell having the similar size to the Sacred Bell of the Great King Seongdeok.
