  • This study conducted the following experiment to examine change of biophysical and physical fitness function on combined exercise program in 20' female university students with obesity according to heights of insole. Obesity related biophysical function was measured by basal metabolism and percent body fat(% Fat) and health related physical fitness was measured by isokinetic strength of quadriceps femoris muscle, muscular endurance, flexibility and power on comparative analysis of pre, post exercise and each groups(0cm, 5cm, 9cm) in 36 female university students with obesity subject according to heights of insole. These result lead us to the conclusion that each group were statistically improved at isokinetic muscular strength of quadriceps femoris muscle and basal metabolism, but 5cm group compared with 0cm and 9cm group was more significant improvement. Consequently, combination exercise applying appropriate heights of insole would be lead to positive increment of muscular strength and basal metabolism.

  • Objectives: Chronic diseases, including back pain, result in significant patient morbidity and societal burden. Overall improvement in physical fitness is recommended for prevention and treatment. Walking is a convenient modality for achieving initial gains. Our objective was to determine whether neighbourhood walkability, acting as a surrogate measure of physical fitness, was associated with the presence of chronic disease. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of prospectively collected data from a prior randomized cohort study of 227 patients referred for tertiary assessment of chronic back pain in Ottawa, ON, Canada. The Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) was calculated from patient-completed questionnaires and medical record review. Using patients' postal codes, neighbourhood walkability was determined using the Walk Score, which awards points based on the distance to the closest amenities, yielding a score from 0 to 100 (0-50: car-dependent; 50-100: walkable). Results: Based on the Walk Score, 134 patients lived in car-dependent neighborhoods and 93 lived in walkable neighborhoods. A multivariate logistic regression model, adjusted for age, gender, rural postal code, body mass index, smoking, median household income, percent employment, pain, and disability, demonstrated an adjusted odds ratio of 2.75 (95% confidence interval, 1.16 to 6.53) times higher prevalence for having a chronic disease for patients living in a car-dependent neighborhood. There was also a significant dose-related association (p=0.01; Mantel-Haenszel chi-square=6.4) between living in car-dependent neighbourhoods and more severe CCI scores. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that advocating for improved neighbourhood planning to permit greater walkability may help offset the burden of chronic disease.

  • Tai Chi is a slow and gentle exercise which is suitable for obese women with chronic diseases. Tai Chi can improve the health of a senior without exacerbating existing impairments, including obese patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of different types of Tai Chi exercise on blood variables (glucose, cholesterol, TG, HDL, LDL, cortisol) and physical fitness (muscle strength, flexibility, muscle endurance, agility, balance). Thirty obese women were recruited from a public health center. They were divided into Yang style (YS: n=15) and 12 (12KS: n=15). The Tai Chi exercise group participated in a training program for 12 weeks (3times/week). There was significant improvement in muscle strength, flexibility, and muscle endurance in both groups. Agility was significantly increased in YS, more than in 12KS. However, there was no improvement in balance in both groups. There was significant improvement in cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and cortisol in both groups. However there was no improvement in blood glucose levels in either group. From the results, there was no significant difference in either Tai Chi exercises. The Tai Chi exercise program was effective in improving cholesterol related variables and physical fitness, except balance, in both groups. Further study is needed in this area.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of health-related indicators according to the participation of swimming program by adults with intellectual disabilities(ID). To this end, 20 adults with IDs, aged 20-39 living in Busna, were selected. Participants divided into two groups: swimming program participation(n=10) and non-participation(n=10). Data were collected by measuring the subjects health-related physical fitness, stress hormones, and immune function and data analysis was conducted using SPSS 18.0, paired t-test, independent t-test and two-way ANOVA. As a result, muscle strength(p<.001), muscular endurance(p<.001), flexibility(p<.001), cardiovascular endurance(p<.01) improvement of exercise group significantly but there was no significant difference in the control group. The stress hormone cortisol(p<.01) was significantly decreased in the exercise group and there was no significant difference in the control group. The immunoglobulins, IgA(p<.05), IgG(p<.001), IgM(p<.05) were significantly increased in the exercise group, but not significantly different in the control group. Therefore, regular swimming program can be said to be a very effective exercise program for improving the physical fitness of adults with IDs, and it is thought that it can reduce stress and help improve immune function. This suggests the need for active physical activity program development and intervention to maintain the health of adults with IDs and prevent chronic diseases.

  • The main purpose of this thesis was to provide a basis to investigate the effectiveness of regular exercises on basic physical fitness for middle school students. 40 second graders from a middle school were chosen randomly and divided into 4 groups-wrestling group, basketball group, jogging group, and control group. The first three groups have been trained 4 times per week for 18 weeks after class to be compared with the comparison group. Pre and post measurements of physical fitness of the subjects were processed by means of the SPSS program. The average and the standard deviation of the measurements of each group were covered with the ANOVA test, according to the periods and the types of training. Duncan's Multiple Range Test was performed to identify the significance of the relationship between training period and improvement in basic sports ability. The conclusions as follows; 1. In the 50 meter sprint, only the wrestling group showed statistical significance, while the other groups showed gradual progress in general. 2. In the standing long jump, there is no group that showed any improvement. 3. In the forward flexion of the trunk, no significance was to be found. 4. In 30-second sit-ups, the wrestling group showed statistical significance. The wrestling group made greater progress than the other groups, and the basketball group and the jogging group also showed rather great progress. 5. In push-ups, statistical significance was found in the groups of wrestling, basketball, and jogging. And the wrestling group came in first, the basketball group second, and the jogging group third on the progress level. 6. In the distance run, the jogging group showed statistical significance and the jogging group made considerable progress. Steady improvement was to be found in the groups of wrestling and basketball.
