Effect of Aeration on Removal of phenolic Compounds in Soil (공기공급이 토양내 페놀화합물 제거에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of aeration on removal of phenolic compounds in soils. Phenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, and pentachlorophenol as phenolic compounds were chosen in this study. Texture of soil used was sandy loam. Temperature and moisture content of the soils in lab-scale reactors were maintained at $25^{\circ}C$ and at 15%, respectively. Phenolic compounds vaporized from reactors were trapped by methylene chloride solution. Phenolic compounds were applied to the soils as individual compound Aeration improved the phenol degradation rate in soil, while it did not in case of 2,4-dichlorophenol and pentachlorophenol. The amount of phenol vaporized by aeration was only 0.3of of that of initial phenol compound added to the soil. First order kinetics described the degradation rates of phenolic compounds better than zero order kinetics.

Fractal Analysis of the Carbonization Pattern Formed on the Surface of a Phenolic Resin (페놀수지 표면에 형성된 탄화패턴에 대한 프랙탈 해석)

  • When a phenolic resin is carbonized by the leakage current flowing along its surface, the carbonization pattern is one of the most important factors to determine its carbonization characteristics. However, the typical carbonization pattern of a phenolic resin is too complicated to be analyzed by conventional Euclidean geometry. In most cases, such a complicated shape shows a fractal structure. It is possible, therefore, to examine the characteristics of the carbonization pattern regarding a given phenolic resin. In order to quantitatively investigate the carbonization pattern of the phenolic resin carbonized by a leakage current, in this paper, the fractal dimension of the carbonization pattern has been calculated as a function of the magnitude of a leakage current and the distance between two electrodes. For reliability of calculation, the correlation function as well as the box counting method has been used to calculate the fractal dimension. According to the result of calculation, the fractal dimension increases as the current increases at the constant electrode gap distance. However, there is no significant relation between the fractal dimension and the electrode gap distance at a constant current.

Optimization of ultrasound-assisted extraction of anthocyanins and phenolic compounds from campbell early grape using response surface methodology (반응표면분석법을 이용한 캠벨얼리 포도의 총 안토시아닌과 총 페놀의 초음파 추출조건 최적화)

  • In this study, ultrasound-assisted extraction conditions of total anthocyanins and total phenolic compounds from Campbell early grape (Vitis labruscana) were optimized via response surface methodology using a Box-Behnken design. Three independent variables, including solid-liquid ratio (1/30-1/50 g/mL), extraction time (2-10 min), and amplitude (20-100%), significantly affected total anthocyanin content. However, no significant effect of these variables was observed in the total phenolic compound content. The optimized extraction conditions were solid-liquid ratio of 1/48.13 g/mL, extraction time of 2 min, and amplitude of 20%. Under these conditions, the predicted values of total anthocyanins and total phenolic compounds were 94.96 and 1,661.16 mg/100 g dry weight (DW), respectively. The experimental values of total anthocyanins and total phenolic compounds were 88.25 and 1,554.37 mg/100 g DW, respectively, which is well matched with the predicted values within 7.5% difference.

Antioxidative effectiveness of ether extract in Crataegus pinnatifida Bunge and Terminalia chebula Rets (산사 및 가자 에테르 추출물의 항산화 효과)

  • Free phenolic acid, soluble ester and insoluble phenolic acid were extracted from defatted Crataegus pinnatifida and Terminalia chebula. Their antioxidative effectiveness was compared with BHA and BHT for soybeen oils by measuring peroxide and thiobarbituric acid values at $45^{\circ}C$ for 25 days. The patterns of these extracts were compared by using high performance liquid chromatography. Ether extracts from Crataegus and Terminalia showed a higher antioxidative effectiveness than BHA and BHT, and the latter was more effective than the former Among phenolic extracts, free phenolic acid and soluble phenolic acid ester were found most effective in Crataegus and Terminalia, respervively, Each phenolic extract was confirmed to be composed of two or three individual compounds.

Extraction Conditions for Rhododendron mucronulatum Pollen (추출조건에 따른 진달래 화분의 이화학적 특성)

  • The physiochemical properties of Rhododendron mucronulatum pollens were examined after the use of various extraction conditions. The levels of phenolic compounds and electron donating abilities (DPPH) were better after 80% (v/v) ethanol extraction than after water extraction. The content of phenolic compounds and the DPPH were high when the solvent ratio was 20X. The content of phenolic compounds was highest at $45^{\circ}C$ (347.60 mg/100 g). The DPPH was highest, at 67.93%, when extraction was performed at $25^{\circ}C$. An extraction time of 6 hr yielded the highest content of phenolic compounds (312.63 mg/100 g). The DPPH did not vary with extraction time. Both the levels of phenolic compounds and DPPH values rose when extractions were performed twice. In summary, a solvent ratio of 20X, an extraction temperature of $25-45^{\circ}C$, double extraction and an extraction time of 6 hare optimal for extraction, with maximal DPPH and phenolic content, of Jindalrae pollens.

Effect of SiO2 on yield and phenolic profile of Tartary buckwheat

  • The aim of this study was to enhance the Tartary buckwheat growth and phenolic profile by the application of $SiO_2$ on potsin the glasshouse. The liquid of $SiO_2$ were applied at three times after three weeks of sowing at ten days interval. The doses of the $SiO_2$ was low (2.5 ml/5 L water), high (10 ml in 5 L water) and control experiment was done without $SiO_2$. In this study, it is clearly shown that high dose of $SiO_2$ increased the buckwheat plant growth including, plant height, leaf length and width, stem diameter, fresh weight and number of seed per plant compared to control treatment. In the same way, the total phenolic compound (1421 mg/100 g), total flavonoid (35.1 mg/100g), rutin (3,130 mg/100g) and DPPH (82%) in plant were also increased high dose of $SiO_2$ compared to control (1,175 mg/100g, 31.9mg/100g, 860 mg/100g, 59%, respectively). Moreover, higher phenolic compound (1,421 mg/100g) and DPPH (82%) was observed in plant compared to seed (196 mg/100mg, 72 %, respectively). In the contrary, total flavonoid (36.2 mg/100g) and rutin (1,400 mg/100g) was higher in buckwheat seed compared to plant (35.1 mg/100g, 3,130 mg/100g, respectively). Finally, it is concluded that higher dose of $SiO_2$ enhance buckwheat growth and phenolic profile. Further investigation is needed to evaluate the optimum dose of $SiO_2$ according to soil conditions in the field.

Resistance to Pine Gall-midge and Phenolic Acid Content in Pine Needles (소나무류의 솔잎혹파리에 대한 저항성과 침엽내(內) Phenolic Acid의 농도)

  • The phenolic acids in needles of five pine species such as Pinus densiflora, P. thunbergii. P. virginiana. P. rigida. and P. koraiensis were analyzed seasionally (March, June, September and December) in order to investigate the resistant factors against pine gall-midge(Thecodiplosis japonensis Uchida et Inouye). The interrelation of resistance to pine gall-midge and the content of phenolic acids in pine needles was investigated in the artificial hybride pine species. The contents of salicylic acid in susceptible species (P. densiflora and P. thunbergii) to pine gall-midge which watered with salicylic acid solution in a pot was determined. The results can be concluded as follows, 1. There was a little change in total phenolic constituents of resistant and susceptible pines seasonally. The each content of benzoic acid, salicylic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid in June was the highest through four seasons. 2. In June, resistant species showed higher content of salicylic acid than susceptible species, while the content of gallic acid was the highest in December. 3. Among the 21 artificial hybrids(P. densiflora ${\times}$ P. virginiana. P. thunbergii ${\times}$ P. virginiana), the hybrides of the higher salicylic acid content showed the lower rate of pine gall formation. 4. Pine gall formation of the susceptible species which were watered with salicylic acid solution remarkably decreased.

Effect of Fed of Phenolic Acids in Plant on Serum Cholesterol Concentration in Rats (식물에 존재하는 페놀산류를 급여한 흰쥐 혈청 콜레스테롤 농도)

  • Phenolic acids are widely distributed in all plant meterial. Most of these acids were combined with plant or grain cell wall. On the other hand, it had been reported that p-coumaric acid exhibited hypocholesterolemic activity in rats. We have undertaken a study of these compounds with regard to their effect on the rat. In this study, the effects of phenolic acid on the serum cholesterol level in rats fed with cholesterol free and cholesterol enriched diets were examined. The commercially available phenolic acid were purchased in the experiment. These compounds were incoporated in the diet at a level of 0.2%. These diets were fed for 21 days to male wistar strain rats with a body weight of 80 to 90g. It was found no significant change in serum cholesterol level in the phenolic acid fed rats in both cholesterol-free and cholesterol-enriched diet.
