It is very important for rehabilitation to deal with psychological aspects of persons with disabilities, as well as efforts improving the institutional and environmental conditions. A majority of persons with severe disabilities in the situation of Korea have difficulty in having and maintaining a job. Work should and would be a source of self-respect and material well-being in this modern society. Therefore, Vocational rehabilitation services are measures in restoration of family functions and social participation of persons with disabilities. This study aims at investigating linguistic characteristics and the validity of constructional concepts of picture interest test Inventories that have been utilized for the segregated groups of people such as persons with developmental disabilities. Picture interest test inventories seemed to be valid for measuring psychological traits and characteristics of people with mental retardation, and this finding can be extended to the group of other developmental disabilities, such as learning disabilities and mild/moderate behavioral deficits. The Holland classification system seemed to be best fitted for developing a comprehensive and accurate vocational interest inventory.
Objectives: To validate the role of a new information and communication technology platform that we created for the betterment of the oral health of persons with disabilities and for providing appropriate health care services. Methods: A Delphi survey was conducted among 16 people in various professions, including academia, government agencies, and dentistry, to evaluate the validity of the information and communication technology platform. Moreover, platform satisfaction was evaluated using a user experience questionnaire among 200 people, including persons with disabilities, parents, and public institutions. Results: Experts in consensus indicated a high validity for the categories of service provider (CV=0.29, CVR=0.69), service target (CV=0.29, CVR=0.38), service contests (CV=0.27, CVR=0.63), and financial support (CV=0.30, CVR=0.63) in our information and communication technology platform. In addition, information from questionnaires on user experience and communication technology satisfaction analysis showed that both users and providers were highly satisfied with the platform. Conclusions: The provision of oral health services based on the new information and communication technology platform has numerous advantages, in addition to providing adequate oral health care for the disabled. Furthermore, the social safety net for improved oral health may be further strengthened.

An opportunity for dental students to come into contact with individuals with disabilities is insufficient. Therefore, prejudice and negative attitudes towards persons with disabilities persist. Working under the assumption that educating dental students regarding people with disabilities will bring about positive awareness, we conducted this study. We investigated the changes in the recognition of the issues and needs of people with disabilities before and after special care dentistry class of students of dental college that will include an experience in a dental clinic with a disabled person. Seventy-two Kyung Hee University School of Dentistry third-year dental students attended the special care dentistry class in one semester and they took the same survey was before and after the class. In the questionnaire, we used the disability factor scale (DFS) that Siller has proposed. The authoritarian virtuousness factor getting lower to a significant level after receiving an education. This means that after the education, the respondents realize that how hard to adapt the disabilities. After receiving an education, the rejection of intimacy factor score significantly get higher than before they took the class. This means that after the training, positive attitudes towards those with disabilities were better than those towards the opposite sex. We were able to confirm a positive change in the recognition for persons with disabilities through the special care dentistry class. Our study shows that educating dental students on the how to take care of individuals with disabilities can bring about a positive change in the attitudes students may have regarding them.
The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of employment for people with developmental disabilities on their social activities. As a research method, cross-analysis, correlation analysis, and logistic regression analysis were performed using questionnaire data on employment status and social activity for 391 persons with developmental disabilities. As a result of the analysis, first, employment for people with developmental disabilities was found to be significant in social activities. In other words, 79.7% of those with developmental disabilities who were employed participated in social activities, and 39.3% of those who were not employed. Second, employment for people with developmental disabilities, whose personal characteristics were carefully verified as a control variable, had a significant effect on social activities and increased by 5.2 times. According to the results of the study, it can be seen that active employment support for people with developmental disabilities and policy efforts for employment are required for participation in social activities of people with developmental disabilities. Finally it was suggested to supported employment, expand standard workplaces for the disabled, introduce a job coach system, and establish a network with related organizations.
The purpose of the research is to understand the life of persons with disabilities caused by an accident by reconstructing their post-accident experiences. As a research tool, Fritz $Sch{\ddot{u}}tze's$ narrative interview was used, and three cases were analyzed in terms of a 'process structure of life'. After the researcher reconstructed each case, she sorted the cases comprehensively both according to the common features as well as to the differences among them. In doing so, the researcher came up with three characteristics of persons with disabilities caused by an accident. First, rather than identifying with their present life, the interviewees identified themselves with their life before the accident happened. Such identification problem is connected with their problem of accepting their handicap. And the interviewees identified themselves with disability groups. It showed that they feel more comfortable and secure among other people with disabilities than with families or friends. This makes them stay in the group of the disabled, in which they can understand and respect each other, rather than staying in a group in which people discriminate the disabled from able bodied and do not accept the disabled as equal members. Second, in their narration the interviewees told stories emphasizing their life after the accident happened. This feature can be compared with the experiences of those persons who underwent a trauma. Finally, it was found that our country's welfare policy for persons with disabilities caused by an accident is designed without differentiating people according to gender or educational background. Through these findings, the researcher intends to reflect on our country's current social welfare services and to look for new methods in order to implement proper social welfare practices.
In order to set the direction of providing facility for the utilization of castle heritage, as well as to establish the method for securing access and determine installation criteria in consideration of preservation environment, an analysis was carried out on the cases of having secured access for people with disabilities in England for the advanced utilization of castle heritage. As the result of the analysis, the planning factors of the facility for people with disabilities in England for the utilization of castle heritage were deduced as follows: 1) The plan for facility was focused on the disabled using wheelchairs and visually impaired persons, rather than on services for hearing-impaired persons and people with learning disability. 2) As for audience movement line plan, regular route was used for audience movement line to lead them in a single direction. 3) As for the provision of prior access information, 3 stepwise access grades were established for the facility information plan of heritage. 4) As for information service by disability type, models were provided; and complementary explanation was provided by using text, drawing, picture, video and voice. 5) Rest spaces were secured where audience could look out upon castle heritage. For the utilization of castle heritage, it is necessary to develop planning factors of the facility design for people with disabilities according to its characteristics.

Dental caries and periodontal disease continue to present unique problems in the dental management of the persons with disabilities because the chronicity of oral diseases complicates the primary physical or mental disability. The increased prevalence of dental disease in most persons with disabilities is probably not due to any inherent proclivity for dental disease but more likely evolves because dental care receives less attention. Prosthetic dentistry procedures are not contraindicated for most patients with physical and mental disabilities. Fixed bridges may be feasible if the patient or care provider can maintain adequate oral hygiene and the patient's disability dose not preclude this type of prosthesis. Removable partial or full dentures may be indicated if the patient or care provider can easily remove the prosthesis and care for it. Although most persons with disabilities need no additional behavior management modalities to complete dental care, some persons require professionally recognized behavior management techniques during treatment, such as physical restraint, pharmacologic agents, or general anesthesia. Hospitalization and the use of general anesthesia are sometimes required to deal effectively with the extreme management problem patient. This patient with mild mental retardation was fearful of dental treatment. Routine restorative, surgical and prosthetic dentistry procedures were performed under general anesthesia.
This study investigated the relationship between social support and caregiving self-efficacy among 530 mothers of persons with intellectual disabilities in their childhood(age 3-12), adolescence(age 13-18), and adulthood(age 19-35), exploring the moderating effect of the life span affiliation of the children with disabilities. The analysis revealed that greater perception of social support predicted higher level of caregiving self-efficacy for all the mothers. However, the moderating effect was detected indicating that there were differences in the effects of social support on caregiving self-efficacy across groups. Although social support was found to have some positive effects on caregiving self-efficacy for each group of mothers of both adolescents and adults, no effects for a group of mothers of children. These findings suggested that greater emphasis be placed on the expanded provision of social support for families of persons with intellectual disabilities in their developmental stages following the childhood.
This study The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of online lifelong education in a home using contents of university-affiliated lifelong education center on the acquisition and generalization of cooking task skills for persons with developmental disabilities. The subjects of this study were three persons with developmental disabilities who lived with their parents in the home without employment after graduation from school. The research design and method used the technique of multiple probe design across subjects during the single subject research. As a result of the study, the three persons with developmental disabilities who participated in the study effectively acquired cooking task skills through online lifelong education in the home using contents of university-affiliated lifelong education center, and generalized the performance of cooking task skills in the actual restaurant environment, not at home.
Background: Dental treatment has shifted to the center of the community, and the public policy of the country has expanded to support the vulnerable classes such as the disabled. The dental profession needs education regarding oral health services for persons with disabilities, and it is necessary to derive the competencies for this. Therefore, we conducted this study to derive the normative ability to understand the role of a dental hygienist in the oral health service for persons with disabilities and improvement plans for education. Methods: We conducted a qualitative analysis for deriving competencies by analyzing the data collected through in-depth interviews with experts in order to obtain abilities through practical experience. Based on the competency criterion, relevant competency in the interview response was derived using the priori method, and it was confirmed whether the derived ability matched the ability determined by the respondent. Results: The professional conduct competencies of dental hygienists, devised by the Korean Association of Dental Hygiene, consists of professional behavior, ethical decision-making, self-assessment skills, lifelong learning, and accumulated evidence. Also, core competencies of the American Dental Education Association competencies for dental hygienist classification such as ethics, responsibility for professional actions, and critical thinking skills were used as the criterion. The dental hygienist's abilities needed for oral health care for people with disabilities, especially in the detailed abilities to fulfill these social needs, were clarified. Conclusion: To activate oral health care for people with disabilities, it is necessary for dental hygienists to fulfill their appropriate roles, and for this purpose, competency-based curriculum restructuring is indispensable. A social safety net for improving the oral health of people with disabilities can be secured by improving the required skills-based education system of dental hygienists and strengthening the related infrastructure.
