Increased impervious surface caused by rapid urbanization serves to produce the discharge of non-point source pollutants such as total suspended solid (TSS). There exist various methods of removing TSS, including a filtration process using granular media (a well-known method to be practically used after the consideration of removal efficiency, clogging, and backwashing efficiency). To determine the TSS removal capability of the filter, we initially performed lab-scale experiments which assessed flow rates, influent concentrations, permeability co-efficients, the particular shapes of suspended solids and potential clogging, and also evaluated TSS removal efficiency when applied to filtration facility in a pilot-scale. In low filtration flux condition, the removal efficiency of suspended solids was more than 95 %, while decreased to 83% in high filtration flux. Regarding the clogging aspect of the experiment, total cumulative solids were loaded up to $19.15kg/m^2$, and TSS removal efficiency was noted to commence to decrease when the loaded solids exceeded $9.0kg/m^2$. It was also noted, however, that superior efficiency was maintained for six hours. In addition, for pilot-scale experiment, the removal efficiency was still high enough (83.4 %) for the solid concentration of 140 ~ 343 mg SS/L and after backwashing, head loss was recovered to 92 ~ 95 % during two hour filtration. With these results, It was confirmed that lifetime of the filter applied to the test was prolonged due to the high treatment efficiency and good backwashing efficiency for the cumulative solids load.

Permeation experiments of a commercial nanofiltration membrane (nominated as ESNA 1) were carried out with aqueous solutions of various single salts, that is, five chlorides (NH$_4$Cl, NaCl, KCl, MgCl$_2$ and $CaCl_2$), three nitrates $(NaNo_3,\;Mg(No_3)_2\;and\;Ca(NO_3)_2)\;and\;three\;sulfates\;((NH_4)_2SO_4,\;Na_2SO_4\;and\;MgSO_4)$. The experimental results showed that (1) the permeate volume flux of the ESNA 1 membrane increased and decreased with the growth of the applied pressure and the feed concentration of salts, respectively. The real rejection of ESNA 1 membrane to most single salts increased with the growth of the permeate volume flux. (2) The reflection coefficients of ESNA 1 membrane to chlorides, nitrates and sulfates are 0.97, 0.96 and 0.99, respectively. The solute permeability of most salts except for magnesium and calcium salts increased with the growth of feed concentration. (3) The sequence of the rejections of ESNA 1 membrane to anions is $R({SO_4}^{2-})>R(CI)>R(NO_3)$ at the same feed concentration. While the sequence of the rejections to cations is cataloged into two cases: $R(Na^+)>R(K^+)>R(Mg^{2+})>R(Ca^{2+})$ at the concentration of 10 mol/$m^3$ and $R(Mg^{2+})>R(Ca^{2+})>R(Na^+)>R(K^+)$ at the concentration of 100 mol/$m^3$. The separation capability of a NF membrane is usually affected by the electrostatic effect and the steric-hindrance effect. In this case, the electrostatic effect is the major factor at low concentration and the steric-hindrance effect is the major factor at high concentration. Both the specific sorption and the hydration also reasonably influenced the separation performance of NF membrane to salts.

Korea needs proper and rational public policies on conservation and use of forest land and other natural resources because of the accelerating expansion of national land developments in recent years. Unfortunately, there is no systematic planning system to support the needs. Generally, forest land use planning needs suitability analysis based on efficient land classification system. The goal of this study was to classify a forest land using multivariate satistical methods. A case study was carried out in winter of 1983 on a mountainous area higher than 100m above sea level located at Mt. Kwanak in Anyang -city, Kyung-gi-do (province). The study area was 19.80 km$^2$wide and was divided into 1, 383 Operational Taxonomic Units (OTU's) by a 120m$\times$120m grid. Fourteen descriptors were identified and quantified for each OTU from existing national land data : elevation, slope, aspect, terrain form, geologic material, surface soil permeability, topsoil type, depth of the solum, soil acidity, forest cover type, stand size class, stand age class, stand density class, and simple forest soil capability class. For this study, a FORTRAN IV program was written for input and output map data, and the computer statistics packages, SPSS and BMD, were used to perform the multivariate statistical analysis. Fourteen variables were analyzed to investigate the characteristics of their fire quench distribution and to estimate the correlation coefficients among them. Principal component analysis was executed to find the dimensions of forest land characteristics, and factor scores were used for proper samples of OTU throughout the study area. In order to develop the classes of forest land classification based on 102 surrogates, cluster and discriminant analyses of principal descriptor variable matrix were undertaken. Results obtained through a series of multivariate statistical analyses were as follows ; 1) Principal component analysis was proved to be a useful tool for data selection and identification of principal descriptor variables which represented the characteristics of forest land and facilitated the selection of samples.
The State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) database is a valuable source for assessment of soil properties at a state level. Using GIS techniques, eight physical soil properties were extracted from the database, including available water capacity, clay content, soil depth, slope, depth to water table, drainage, texture, and permeability. The influences of these soil properties on drought severity, which was estimated by NDVI departures from normal, were determined over western-central Kansas. Study results showed that seven soil properties had significant relationships with drought severity with correlation coefficients, ranging from -0.89 to 0.85. Thermal emission signals from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) had a significant relationship with drought severity expressed by NDVI departure from normal and represented spatial progression of drought over time well. High thermal signals, indicating high soil moisture deficit, emerged in the western region and their spatial distribution changed over time. Different sets of soil factors influenced drought severity among early-drying and late-drying areas.

Recently, as the importance of structural maintenance has been increased, studies on self - healing concrete technology are being actively carried out. On the other hand, test for evaluating the self-healing performance is not standardized yet. Although visual test is used as a basic method for measuring crack widths, it is difficult to observe the crack width inside the specimen, and there is a disadvantage that only the local measurement of the surface can be measured due to the inhomogeneous cracking characteristics. Although permeability test has been widely used as an indirect method for measuring crack width, there is a problem due to the viscosity of water, and also a possibility that the internal material of the specimen may be eluted during the test. In this study, we propose a crack width evaluation method using gas diffusion characteristics. Idealized straight cracks were fabricated by acrylic and the diffusion coefficients of specimens were analyzed with respect to crack width and thickness. The experimental results show that the crack width and the diffusion coefficient are in a linear relationship and that the thickness and diffusion coefficient are inversely related.

High-strength shielding concrete against gamma radiation is a priority for many medical and industrial facilities. This paper aimed to investigate the gamma-ray shielding properties of high-strength hematite concrete mixed with silica fume (SF) with nanoparticles of lead dioxide (PbO2), tungsten oxide (WO3), and bismuth oxide (Bi2O3). The effect of mixing steel fibres with the aforementioned binders was also investigated. The reference mixture was prepared for high-strength concrete (HSCC) containing 100% hematite coarse and fine aggregate. Thirteen mixtures containing 5% SF and nanoparticles of PbO2, WO3, and Bi2O3 (2%, 5%, and 7% of the cement mass, respectively) were prepared. Steel fibres were added at a volume ratio of 0.28% of the volume of concrete with 5% of nanoparticles. The slump test was conducted to workability of fresh concrete Unit weight water permeability, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, and modulus of elasticity tests were conducted to assess concrete's engineering properties at 28 days. Gamma-ray radiation of 137Cs emits photons with an energy of 662 keV, and that of 60Co emits two photons with energies of 1173 and 1332 keV were applied on concrete specimens to assess radiation shielding properties. Nanoparticles partially replacing cement reduced slump in workability of fresh concrete. The compressive strength of mixtures, including nanoparticles was shown to be greater, achieving 94.5 MPa for the mixture consisting of 7.5 PbO2. In contrast, the mixture (5PbO2-F) containing steel fibres achieved the highest values for splitting tensile, flexural strength, and modulus of elasticity (11.71, 15.97, and 42,840 MPa, respectively). High-strength shielded concrete (7.5PbO2) showed the best radiation protection. It also showed the minimum concrete thickness required to prevent the transmission of radiation.
The seismic holding behaviors of plate anchor embedded into submerged coarse-grained soils were investigated considering different anchor inclinations. The limit equilibrium method and the Pseudo-Dynamic Approach (PDA) were employed to calculate the inertia force of the soils within the failure rupture. In addition, assuming the permeability of coarse-grained soils was sufficiently large, the coefficient of hydrodynamic force applied on the inclined plate anchor is obtained through adopting the exact potential flow theory. Therefore, the seismic holding resistance was calculated as the combination of the inertia force and the hydrodynamic force within the failure rupture. The failure rupture can be developed due to the uplift loads, which was assumed to be an arc of a circle perpendicular to the anchor and inclines at (π/4 - φ/2). Then, the derived analytical solutions were evaluated by comparing the static breakout factor Nγ to the published experimental and analytical results. The influences of soil and wave properties on the plate anchor holding behavior are reported. Finally, the dynamic anchor holding coefficients Nγd, were reported to illustrate the anchor holding behaviors. Results show that the soil accelerations in x and z directions were both nonlinear. The amplifications of soil accelerations were more severe at lower normalized frequencies (ωH/V) compared to higher normalized frequencies. The coefficient of hydrodynamic force, C, of the plate anchor was found to be almost constant with anchor inclinations. Finally, the seismic anchor holding coefficient oscillated with the oscillation of the inertia force on the plate anchor.
The objective of this work was to investigate the gas permeation properties of CO2 and CH4 for PEBAX®/TS-530 hybrid membranes and compare with pure PEBAX®-1657 membrane. With FTIR and XRD it was possible to confirm that TS-530 was dispersed well in PEBAX® matrix. Compared with pure PEBAX® membrane, ideal separation factor for PEBAX®/TS-530 (10 wt%) hybrid membrane was enhanced a little. As the amount of TS-530 was increased, the gas permeability coefficients of both CO2 and CH4 were increased, while the ideal separation factor was decreased. This results were explained by the reduction of crystallinity of polyamide block and interchain distance caused by introduction of inorganic nanoparticles. And fumed silica might tend to agglomerate, resulting in forming nonselective nanogaps in the hybrid materials, thus the diffusivity would be enhanced at the expense of diffusivity selectivity.
This study was conducted to simulate the lifetime of the membrane by analyzing the performance of the membrane degraded by chlorine. Chlorine exposure under several conditions caused the degradation of the membrane, resulting in the absence of any salts and an extreme increase in permeability. When the n value was calculated and compared through CnT analysis and CTn analysis, the p values were all less than 0.005, but CTn analysis, which had a higher R2 value, was adopted to simulate the membrane lifetime. Power coefficients take on values higher than 1, indicating that the exposure time to chlorine has a greater influence on membrane deterioration than the chlorine exposure concentration at 20℃ and 30℃. In particular, the process should be operated at less than 0.5 ppm at 30℃, and the chlorine exposure time of 1 cycle should be set to within 15 hours. In addition, the sensitivity to chlorine increased by 10.5 to 12.2 times when the chlorine exposure temperature increased by 10℃ through the correlation between the chlorine exposure cycle and membrane lifetime. The membrane lifetime investigated in this study is only an estimated value, entirely because of chlorine membrane deterioration, excluding raw water characteristics and the type of detergent. Accordingly, it is considered that the membrane lifetime simulation can be applied by comparing the membrane performance with the actual process based on the filtration performance of membrane deterioration by chlorine.
The ideal membranes for membrane-covered oxygen probes system should be selectively permeable for oxygen and chemically inert, and have good mechanical strength. Polysulfone(PSf) was selected to develop the membrane for membrane-covered oxygen electrodes system. PSf membranes have properties such as good reproducibility, good mechanical strength, chemical inertness, and high heat resistance. PSf membranes were cast from polymer solution on the glass plate at constant temperature, and casting solvents used were tetrahydrofuran(THF), methylene chloride, and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone(NMP). Tricresyl phosphate(TCP) as plasicizer was added to PSf to increase the softness of membrane. The permeation characteristics were observed for pure oxygen and nitrogen through pure PSf membranes by variable volume method and membrane-covered electrode system. The permeability coefficients of oxygen and nitrogen measured by variable volume method were slightly decreased with increasing of upstream pressure. The permeation properties of PSf membrane using methylene choride as casting solvent were not affected by the PSf amount of polymer solution. The permeability coefficients of oxygen and nitrogen for PSf membrane containing TCP were very slightly lower than those for pure PSf membrane, but ideal separation factors were slightly higher. The flexibility of PSf membrane containing 2wt% TCP was better than that of pure PSf membrane. It was expected that this increase in flexibility would solve the difficulty of fixing the membrane to the cathode. The membrane-covered oxygen probes system was composed of anode, cathode and electrolyte. The type of the anode was Ag/AgCl half-cell, that of cathode was Ag, and the electrolyte was 4N KCl solution. The result of sampled current voltametry for PSf membrane showed the plateu region at -0.3V~-1.0V. The correlation coefficient of oxygen partial pressure versus current for PSf membrane was relatively high, 0.99949. It was concluded that PSf membrane was the good candidate for the membrane-covered oxygen probes system.
