  • Seasonal occurrence pattern of the peach pyramid moth (PPM), Dichocrosis punctfferahs, was studied by sex pheromone traps and mercury light traps in several Fuyu persimmon orchards under different control pressures in southern region of Korea in 2000 and 2001. Fruit damage by the larvae was also checked at harvesting time from 1999 to 2001. The pattern showed 3 distinct peaks; the 1st one in mid to late June, the 2nd one in mid to late August, and the 3rd one in late September. Number of PPM catches was higher in less controlled than in intensively controlled orchards. There were no persimmon fruits damaged by the larvae of PPM and persimmon fruit moth, Stathmopoda masinissa, in our samples from the testing orchards at harvesting time. Therefore, it is unlikely that these two quarantine pests are included in the exporting fruits. Considering flora adjacent to the tested orchards and zero levels of fruit damage by the larvae, there is a strong possibility that the moths flew from neighbouring chestnut trees or other host plants to be attracted to the traps in the persimmon orchards.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the inhibition efficacy of high CO$_2$ atmosphere (35, 60, and 100% ${\times}$ 24, 48, and 72 h) on growth of Botrytis cinerea in vitro in order to offer sterilizing method of horticultural crops including peach fruits. Botrytis cinerea was isolated from a naturally infected peach fruits. Growth of the fungus at 25$^{\circ}C$ declined with increased CO$_2$ concentration and treatment duration. Especially, 100% CO$_2$ provided completely inhibition effect of growth of the fungus for 72 h. After removal of high CO$_2$ condition, however, the fungus showed normal growth speed. The growth of fungus at low temperature was completely inhibited temporarily by short-term 100% CO$_2$ treatment, but resumed right after transferring to normal atmosphere at 25$^{\circ}C$.

  • The phenomena of global warming has led to an increase in the average air temperature in temperate climates. Springtime frost damage is becoming more common, and after a period of dormancy, damage to buds, blooms, and developing fruits is greater significant than damage from low winter temperatures. Peaches are a crucial crop among moderate fruits. Spring frost damage in peaches can have a negative effect on crop growth, yield, and quality. It is noteworthy that these plants have evolved defenses against spring frost damage while being exposed to a variety of low temperatures in the early spring. In this current review, recent research advancements on spring frost damage avoidance in peaches were deliberated. Additionally, adaptive mechanisms of peach, such as deacclimation and reacclimation, were emphasized. Moreover, the emerging advancements using various omics approaches revealed the peach physiology and molecular mechanisms comprehensively. Furthermore, the use of chemical products and understanding the spring frost mechanisms through the use of environmental chamber temperature stimulation and infrared thermography studies were also discussed. This review is essential groundwork and paves the way to derive and design future research for agronomists and horticulturalists to overcome the challenges of spring frost damage avoidance and crop management in these circumstances.

  • We studied to compare with the effect on the shoot growth and yield relavant to weed control methods in peach. As the results about 10 day intervals and 3 times investigation after each primary treatment, treatment plot of 2 times and 3 times with the herbicide, glufosinate ammonium, were 98.2~98.6% into $10^{th}$ day, 78.6~79.6% into $20^{th}$ day, 40.7~41.1% into $30^{th}$ day, fabric covering treatment showed 100%, 100% and 97.5% and treatment plot of machinery weeding were 92.1%, 56.4% and 36.4%, respectively. Also, we compared shoot growth for pre- and post-harvest. In the results, most of weed control methods showed better growth than control. Thus, the average number of standard fruits for treatment plot of 2 times with the herbicide and that of machinery weeding was different significantly in relation to control. Therefore, we think that the herbicide henceforth is well worth the application because treatment of 2 times or 3 times with the herbicide showed significant the control effect against all of 14 weed species surveyed in peach orchard and thus no inhibition for growth and number of standard fruits in peach trees.

  • The fungus, Podosphaera pannosa, was identified in 1991 as the cause of powdery mildew symptoms on peach (Prunus persica var. persica) fruit from Korea based on the morphological characteristics of the conidial state. Recently, however, in Serbia and France, the cause of 'rusty spot' found on peach fruit was identified as P. leucotricha, and the cause of 'powdery mildew' on nectarine (Prunus persica var. nucipersica) fruit was identified as P. pannosa. To confirm the identity of the Korean pathogen, we collected four samples of powdery mildew from Korean peach fruit: three with the 'powdery mildew' symptom and one with the 'rusty spot' symptom. Morphological examination of the four samples confirmed P. pannosa as the pathogen. Internal transcribed spacer sequences of rDNA were analyzed for molecular characterization. A phylogenetic tree showed that the Korean isolates were clustered into a clade containing P. pannosa from Rosa species, with high sequence similarities of more than 99%. Thus, we showed that the powdery mildew and rusty spot symptoms on peach fruits from Korea are associated with P. pannosa.

  • To examine the relationship between plant hormones and the development of pepper anthracnose, we investigated the effects of several plant hormones on the progression of disease symptoms. Of the five plant hormones examined, abscisic acid (ABA) increased the lesion length and disease incidence on detached fruits of Capsicum annuum cv. Nokkwang. The simultaneous application of ABA with inoculation of Colletotrichum acutatum JC24 resulted in increased lesion length, depending the concentration of ABA applied. Additionally, application of ABA caused the development of pepper anthracnose in fruits of Capsicum baccatum cvs. PBC80 and PBC81, which were previously resistant to the disease. Furthermore, ABA administration rendered increased pathogenicity of other isolates of C. acutatum BAC02063, PECH10, and TCBNU3 obtained from the Chinese matrimony vine, peach, and tea tree, respectively. Our data suggest that exogenous ABA may result in the suppression of defense mechanisms of pepper fruits against anthracnose, which leads to a change in the susceptibility of pepper fruits and the development of pepper anthracnose.

  • Objectives: Intake of fruits and vegetables has protective effects against stroke attack. This study intended to examine the status of consuming fruits and vegetables and to find out which factors may influence the frequency of consumption of fruits and vegetables in individuals with a history of stroke. Methods: The data of 208 subjects from 5th (2010, 2011) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHNES) who reported a stroke diagnosis was used for analysis. To identify major factors influencing the consumption of fruits and vegetables, a classification-tree analysis was carried out. Results: Among those who reported a stroke diagnosis, the frequencies of consumption of fruits and vegetables were influenced by their age, place of residence (urban or rural), economic status, educational level, occupation, number of family members, frequency of eating out, and having meals (breakfast or lunch) with family members. Two factors from fruits and three factors from vegetables were generated by exploratory factor analyses. Urban residents ate fruits and vegetables more frequently in all factors than rural residents. Eating frequencies of 'seasonal fruits (orange, apple, strawberry, melon, pear and watermelon)', 'easily-accessible fruits (persimmon, tangerine, grape, peach, banana)', and 'Western-style vegetables (cabbage, mushroom, carrot, tomato, spinach)' were influenced by the socioeconomic status. Eating frequencies of 'Korean-style vegetables (bean sprout, radish leaves, pumpkin/squash, sea weed)', 'preserved vegetables (Korean cabbage, radish, laver, cucumber)' were influenced by having breakfast with family members. Conclusions: The results of this study suggested that by eating more fruits and vegetables, more preventive effects against secondary stroke attack are expected in stroke patients who live in the rural areas and who do not eat breakfast with family members. In addition, more outreach and education programs are needed for them.

  • Fungicide-resistant isolates of Monilinia fructicola grew readily on media amended with 0.1, 1.0, 10, 100 and $1,000\mu\textrm{g}$ a.i./ml of carendazim, benomyl, or thiophanate-methyl. However, sensitive isolates did not grow on media amended even with $0.1\mu\textrm{g}$ a.i./ml of carbendazim, $1.0\mu\textrm{g}$ a.i./ml of benomyl or thiophanate-methyl. The fitness compositions including mycelial growth on fungicide-free medium, sporulation on fungicide-free medium and pear, and virulence on pear were not different between resistant and sensitive isolates. The resistant isolates persisted carbendazim resistance during multiple subdulturing and long term storage. The competitive ability of resistant isolates obtained from peach orchards in Korea was similar to those of sensitive isolates.

  • In order to get the actual pesticide usage data for fruit crops at farmer's gate, this survey was carried out on the growers of 6 representative fruit crops such as apple, citrus, grape, peach, pear and persimmon, in Korea. One hundred fifty farmers were selected in main production areas to record their pesticide usage during the growing seasons. Pesticides were sprayed in pear 15.2 times/year and persimmon 7 times/year. Pesticide input amount per unit for fruits was 39.5 for citrus, 22.1 for apple, 21.5 for pear, 11.9 for peach, 10.8 for persimmon and 6.7 a.i. kg/ha for grape, respectively. The amounts of pesticides sprayed in 2002 except for peach and pear tend to decrease compared with those in 1999. The major fungicides used were mancozeb, propineb, dithianon, etc., while the major insecticides were fenitrothion, chlorpyrifos, methidathion, etc. Total active ingredients of pesticides used for six fruit crops amounted to 18.3% of total sales amount of pesticides for horticulture in 2002. The amounts of pesticides sprayed on citrus, grape, peach and pear in Korea was less than those in U.S.A., excepting those in apple.
