  • The purpose of this study was to understand a mother's parenting behavior and home environment in relation to the stress of a male child. The subjects were 200 mothers of 4-6 years old children in early childhood programs located in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. Instruments used in this study were the Mother's Parenting Behavior Scale (Park Seong Yeon & Lee Suk, 1990), Home Scale (Jang Yeong Ae, 1981), and Children's Usual Stress Scale (Yeom Hyeon Gyeong, 1998). Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis. Results indicated that (a) stress was shown to be higher if the mother's parenting behavior was authoritarian and over-protective, (b) children of lower economic background showed a higher stress level than middle and upper economic background subjects, and (c) the mother's educational background, authoritarian and over-protective parenting behavior and quality of the family background were meaningful variables for children's stress.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of depression in the relationships between marital conflict and parenting behavior of fathers. The data from fathers of 1703 4-year-old children participating in the Panel Study of Korean Children was analyzed. Findings of this study from structural equation modeling analysis indicated that marital conflict was associated positively with depression. Parenting behavior was predicted by depression. Marital conflict had a negative effect on parenting behavior. This study showed that the relationships between marital conflict and parenting behavior were mediated by depression.

Results: For the statistical analysis, the t-test was used for the family support and parenting behaviors according to the general characteristics. The influence elicited by the instrument of parenting behavior was determined using multiple regression under the control of general characteristics. The influencing factors are mothers's affection and father's supervision, neglection and affection. Conclusion: Based on the study results, it is important father's behavior to their children especially they are regarded as father's neglect is not support them. • Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore whether there are gender differences in the influences of paternal parenting behavior on the relational aggression of adolescents and to examine the mediating effects of internal attribution and normative beliefs about aggressive behaviors. Methods: This study assessed 492 fifth to sixth graders from an elementary school (237 males and 255 females). Results: The results of this study were as follows: First, the effect of paternal affectionate parenting behavior on girls' reactive aggression was partially mediated by internal attribution. Second, the effect of paternal coercive parenting behavior on boys' proactive aggression was completely mediated by normative beliefs about aggressive behavior. Third, girls' proactive aggression was partially mediated by normative beliefs about aggressive behavior. Conclusion: These results suggest the need to further examine relational aggression and to help children gain positive relationships with peers.

  • The purpose of the present study was to examine mechanisms by which the characteristics of child temperament influences academic achievement in late childhood. It was hypothesized that the effects of child temperament on achievement would be mediated by assertive behavior on the part of children and maternal parenting behavior. Data for this study came from self-report questionnaires completed by 657 elementary school children (343 boys, 314 girls). The results of structural equation modeling demonstrated that child temperament affected academic achievement through both assertive behavior and maternal parenting behavior; this was evidenced across the entire sample. Child temperament (approach-withdrawal, mood quality, persistence) also had a number of positive effects on assertive behavior (directiveness, social assertiveness, defense of rights and interests) and maternal parental behavior (warmth-acceptance, guidance). These results were found to be the case for both boys and girls. The results of this study further revealed that maternal parenting behavior mediated the relationship between child temperament and achievement for boys, whereas assertive behavior played the same role for girls. These findings suggest the need for different approaches in developing programs to improve levels of academic achievement which give due consideration to child temperament and social behavior as well as parenting, based on child gender.

  • This study was conducted to study the associations between parents' effortful control (EC), their parenting behavior and infants' EC. Subjects of the present study were 55 infants and their parents. Parents who participated in this study replied to questionnaires, including ECBQ-SF, ATQ-SF and Parenting style scale. There was positive correlations between the parents' EC, affectionate parenting style and infants' EC by zero-order correlation. We also performed Mann-Whitney test on the acquired data and it showed significant differences in the infants' EC by their parents' EC and parenting behavior. More specifically, infants with more affectionate and permissive parents showed higher levels of EC. Finally, we performed a partial correlation analysis and its results revealed that the correlation coefficient between the parents' EC and the infants' EC decreased when the parenting style was controlled. These results are vital to have a better understanding on the developmental pathways to the EC.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a mother/infant-toddler health program developed to enhance parenting knowledge, behavior and confidence in low income mothers and home environment. Methods: A one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design was used. Sixty-nine dyads of mothers and infant-toddlers (aged 0-36 months) were provided with weekly intervention for seven session. Each session consisted of three parts; first, educating to increase integrated knowledge related to the development of the infant/toddler including nutrition, first aid and home environment; second, counseling to share parenting experience among the mothers and to increase their nurturing confidence; third, playing with the infant/toddler to facilitate attachment-based parenting behavior for the mothers. Results: Following the programs, there were significant increases in parenting knowledge on nutrition and first aid. A significant improvement was found in attachment-based parenting behavior, but not in home safety practice. Nurturing confidence was not significantly increased. The program led to more positive home environment for infant/toddler's health and development. Conclusion: The findings provide evidence for mother-infant/toddler health program to improve parenting knowledge, attachment-based parenting behavior and better home environment in low income mothers. Study of the long term effectiveness of this program is recommended for future research.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of marital satisfaction and depression of adoptive mother on the problem behaviors of adopted children and the mediating effects of parenting competency between them. Contextual variables such as family background and adoption-related characteristics were also included as control variables. The results of multiple regression analysis showed marital satisfaction had significant influence on the problem behavior of adopted child through flexibility of parenting competency, while depression was not significantly related to parenting competency of adoptive mother. Yet, maternal depression had direct influence on the problem behavior of adopted child. Based on the limitations of the study, suggestions for further study were made.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate if conflict resolution strategies that middle school students use are different according to grade, gender and parenting behavior. Six hundred middle school students completed Scale on Friendship Conflict Resolution Strategies in Friendship and Parenting Behavior Inventory. Collected data were analyzed using Two Way ANOVA, Cross-Tabulation Analysis and Multiple Regression Analysis. The results of the study showed that strategies that students use in conflict situations were partially different according to gender and grade. And parenting behaviors influenced strategies that students use in conflict situations. The implications of this study on theory and practice were discussed. Finally, limitations of this study and suggestions for further study were made.
