This paper presents a reliability-based shape optimization (RBSO) using the evolutionary structural optimization (ESO). An actual design involves uncertain conditions such as material property, operational load, poisson's ratio and dimensional variation. The deterministic optimization (DO) is obtained without considering of uncertainties related to the uncertainty parameters. However, the RBSO can consider the uncertainty variables because it has the probabilistic constraints. In order to determine whether the probabilistic constraint is satisfied or not, simulation techniques and approximation methods are developed. In this paper, the reliability-based shape design optimization method is proposed by utilization the reliability index approach (RIA), performance measure approach (PMA), single-loop single-vector (SLSV), adaptive-loop (ADL) are adopted to evaluate the probabilistic constraint. In order to apply the ESO method to the RBSO, a sensitivity number is defined as the change of strain energy in the displacement constraint. Numerical examples are presented to compare the DO with the RBSO. The results of design example show that the RBSO model is more reliable than deterministic optimization.
This paper describes the method of hull shape optimization to improve the resistance performance of planing hulls when a reference hull shape and its principal dimensions are given. First, the planing hull of precedent research is adopted as the reference hull and an optimization problem is formulated by defining hull shape parameters. The search space of this research is discretized for computing cost and DPSO(Discrete binary version of Particle Swarm Optimization) method is used to solve the optimization problem. As the result of optimization, the decrease of resistance is confirmed from the comparison between the reference hull's and the modified hull's planing performance from computational results.

Blended-Wing-Body Underwater Glider (BWBUG), which has excellent hydrodynamic performance, is a new kind of underwater glider in recent years. In the shape optimization of BWBUG, the lift to drag ratio is often used as the optimization target. However this results in lose of internal space. In this paper, the energy reserve is defined as the direct proportional function of the internal space of BWBUG. A motion model, which relates gliding range to steady gliding motion parameters as well as energy consumption, is established by analyzing the steady-state gliding motion. The maximum gliding range is used as the optimization target instead of the lift to drag ratio to optimizing the shape of BWBUG. The result of optimization shows that the maximum gliding range of initial design is increased by 32.1% though an Efficient Global Optimization (EGO) process.
The aim of this study is the optimization of the parameters of interconnected Hydro-Pneumatic (HP) suspension system of a three-axle vehicle for ride comfort and handling. For HP suspension systems of equivalent vertical stiffness and damping characteristics, interconnected HP suspension systems increase roll and pitch stiffness and damping characteristics of the vehicle as compared to unconnected HP suspension systems. Thus, they result in improved handling and braking/acceleration performances of the vehicle. However, increased roll and pitch stiffness and damping characteristics also increase roll and pitch accelerations, which in turn result in degraded ride comfort performance. Therefore, in order to improve both ride comfort and vehicle handling performances simultaneously, an optimum parameter set of an interconnected HP suspension system is obtained through an optimization procedure. The objective function is formed as the sum of the weighted vertical accelerations according to ISO 2631. The roll angle, one of the important measures of vehicle handling and driving safety, is imposed as a constraint in the optimization study. Upper and lower parameter bounds are used in the optimization in order to get a physically realizable parameter set. Optimization procedure is implemented for a three-axle vehicle with unconnected and interconnected suspension systems separately. Optimization results show that interconnected HP suspension system results in improvements in both ride comfort and vehicle handling performance, as compared to the unconnected suspension system. As a result, interconnected HP suspension systems present a solution to the conflict between ride comfort and vehicle handling which is present in unconnected suspension systems.
This paper presents a design methodology for determining configurations of slider air bearings considering the randomness of the air-bearing surface (ABS) geometry by using the iSIGHT. A reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) problem is formulated to minimize the variations in the mean values of the flying heights from a target value while satisfying the desired probabilistic constraints keeping the pitch and roll angles within a suitable range. The reliability analysis is employed to estimate how the fabrication tolerances of individual slider parameters affect the final flying attitude tolerances. The proposed approach first solves the deterministic optimization problem. Then, beginning with this solution, the RBDO is continued with the reliability constraints affected by the random variables. Reliability constraints overriding the constraints of the deterministic optimization attempt to drive the design to a reliability solution with minimum increase in the objective. The simulation results of the RBDO are listed in comparison with the values of the initial design and the results of the deterministic optimization, respectively. To show the effectiveness of the proposed approach, the reliability analyses are simply carried out by using the mean value first-order second-moment (MVFO) method. The Monte Carlo simulation of the RBDO's results is also performed to estimate the efficiency of the proposed approach. Those results are demonstrated to satisfy all the desired probabilistic constraints, where the target reliability level for constraints is defined as 0.8.
When a projectile travels at high speed underwater, supercavitating flow arises, in which a huge cavity is generated behind the projectile so that only the nose, i.e., the cavitator, of the projectile is wetted, while the rest of it should be surrounded by the cavity. In that case, the projectile can achieve very high speed due to the reduced drag. Furthermore if the nose of the body is shaped properly, the attendant pressure drag can be maintained at a very low value, so that the overall drag is also reduced dramatically. In this study, shape optimization technique is employed to determine the optimum cavitator shape for minimum drag, given certain operating conditions. Shape optimization technique is also used to solve the potential flow problem for any given cavitator, which is a free boundary value problem having the cavity shape as unknown a priori. Analytical sensitivities are derived for various shape parameters in order to implement a gradient-based optimization algorithm. Simultaneous optimization technique is proposed for efficient cavitator shape optimization, in which the cavity and cavitator shape are determined in a single optimization routine.
Penetration of renewable energy sources makes the modern interconnected power systems to have more intelligence and flexibility in the control. Hence, it is essential to maintain the system frequency and tie-line power exchange at nominal values using Load Frequency Control (LFC) for efficient, economic and reliable operation of power systems. In this paper, intelligent tuning of the Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller for LFC in an interconnected power system is considered as a main objective. The chosen problem is formulated as an optimization problem and the optimal gain parameters of PID controllers are computed with three innovative swarm intelligent algorithms named Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Bacterial Foraging Optimization Algorithm (BFOA) and hybrid Bacterial Foraging Particle Swarm Optimization (BFPSO) and a comparative study is made between them. A new objective function designed with necessary time domain specifications using weighted sum approach is also offered in this report and compared with conventional objective functions. All the simulation results clearly reveal that, the hybrid BFPSO tuned PID controller with proposed objective function has better control performances over other optimization methodologies.
The optimum design of truss structures is one of the significant categories in structural optimization that has widely been applied by researchers. In the present study, new mathematical programming called Consistent Approximation (CONAP) method is utilized for the simultaneous optimization of the size and shape of truss structures. The CONAP algorithm has already been introduced to optimize some structures and functions. In the CONAP algorithm, some important parameters are designed by employing design sensitivities to enhance the capability of the method and its consistency in various optimum design problems, especially structural optimization. The cross-sectional area of the bar elements and the nodal coordinates of the truss are assumed to be the size and shape design variables, respectively. The displacement, allowable stress and the Euler buckling stress are taken as the design constraints for the problem. In the proposed method, the primary optimization problem is replaced with a sequence of explicit sub-problems. Each sub-problem is efficiently solved using the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm. Several truss structures are designed by employing the CONAP method to illustrate the efficiency of the algorithm for simultaneous shape and size optimization. The optimal solutions are compared with some of the mathematical programming algorithms, the approximation methods and metaheuristic algorithms those reported in the literature. Results demonstrate that the accuracy of the optimization is improved and the convergence rate speeds up.
In this paper, a parameter optimization technique for a mobile robot navigation is discussed. Authors already have proposed a navigation algorithm for mobile robots with sonar sensors using fuzzy decision making theory. Fuzzy decision making selects the optimal via-point utilizing membership values of each via-point candidate for fuzzy navigation goals. However, to make a robot successfully navigate through an unknown and cluttered environment, one needs to adjust parameters of membership function, thus changing shape of MF, for each fuzzy goal. Furthermore, the change in robot configuration, like change in sensor arrangement or sensing range, invokes another adjusting of MFs. To accomplish an intelligent way to adjust these parameters, we adopted a genetic algorithm, which does not require any formulation of the problem, thus more appropriate for robot navigation. Genetic algorithm generates the fittest parameter set through crossover and mutation operation of its string representation. The fitness of a parameter set is assigned after a simulation run according to its time of travel, accumulated heading angle change and collision. A series of simulations for several different environments is carried out to verify the proposed method. The results show the optimal parameters can be acquired with this method.

In this paper, a direct method is developed to extact RF equivalent circuit of a packaged BJT without optimization. First, parasitic components of plastic package are removed from measured S-parameters using open and short package patterns. Using package do-embedded S-parameters, a direct and simple method is proposed to extract bonding wire inductance and chip pad capacitance between package lead and chip pad. The small-signal model parameters of internal BJT are next determined by Z and Y-parameter formula derived from RF equivalent circuit. The modeled S-parameters of packaged BJT agree well with measured ones, verifying the accuracy of this new extraction method.
