  • The present study has numerically investigated two-dimensional flow over three circular cylinders in an equidistant side-by-side arrangement at a low Reynolds number. For the study, numerical simulations are performed, using the immersed boundary method, in the range of g* < 5 at Re= 100, where g* is the spacing between two adjacent cylinder surfaces divided by the cylinder diameter. Results show that the flow characteristics significantly depend on the gap spacing and a total of five kinds of wake patterns are observed over the range: modulation-synchronized (g* (equation omitted) 2), inphase-synchronized (g* (equation omitted) 1.5) , flip-flopping (0.3 < g* (equation omitted) 1.2) , deflected (g* (equation omitted) 0.3), and single bluff-body patterns (g* < 0.3). Moreover, the parallel and symmetric modes are also observed depending on g* in the regime of the flip-flopping pattern. The corresponding flow fields and statistics are presented to verify the observations.

  • An experimental investigation was performed to study the characteristics of ER (Electro-Rheological) fluid flow in a horizontal rectangular tube with or without D. C voltage. To determine some characteristics of the ER flow, 2D PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique was employed for velocity measurements. This research found the mean velocity distributions with 0kV /mm, l.0kV /mm and l.5kV /mm for Re=0, 0.62, 1.29 and 2.26. When the strength of the electric field increased, the cluster of ERF was clearly strong along the test tube and the flow rate decreased. The present results will contribute to the economical and compact design of ER fluids system.

  • We have proposed a model to describe the current-voltage characteristics of fabricated devices using the Biot-Savart's law in order to develop superconducting flux flow transistors, The measured and calculated values, including induced voltage, transresistance and current gain were investigated in relation to the parallel flow of the vortices in a single microbridge. The predictions agreed very well with measured results.

  • Precise leakage prediction for annular type seals of turbomachinery is necessary for enhancing their efficiency and various prediction methods have been developed. As the seal passage is designed intricately, the analysis based on Bulk-flow concept which has been mainly used in predicting seal leakage is limited. In order to improve the seal leakage prediction, full Navier-Stokes Equations with turbulent model derived in the seal flow passage have to be solved. In this study, 3D CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis has been performed for predicting leakage of various non-contact type anular seals using FLUENT. Compared to the results by Bulk-flow model analysis, experiment, and 2D CFD analysis, the result of 3D CFD analysis shows improvement in predicting seal leakage, especially for the parallel grooved pump seal.

  • When a flow passes a series of parallel ones, vortexes will be formed in the wake after the cylinder. This paper treats the problems of vibration and noise in tube bank of gas flow duct of heat exchanger thermal suppling boiler in combine cycle thermal power plants. The boiler burner type has recently been changed to low Nox burner and begun commercial operation. After more load up operation then 70%, high level noise and vibration were generated at gas flow duct of heat exchanger.

  • We conducted simple experiments to consider the influence of nonlinear groundwater flow on Trichloroethylene (TCE) as Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (DNAPL) migration in a rough walled single fracture. A glass replica of a granite sample containing a rough single fracture was made and experiments were conducted over a range of Re. Observations are compared to the results of TCE migration tests that were conducted in two parallel glass plates over the same range of Re. Results show nonlinear groundwater flow in a single fracture affect TCE migration path and residual saturation of TCE.

  • Abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) is a shellfish that feeds on kelp and, as a product, it can often achieve a high market value. However, the dissolved oxygen (DO) levels in coastal waters in Korea have been negatively impacted by pollution from many anthropogenic sources. Herein, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software package was used to analyze the distribution of the DO concentration within an abalone containment structure. A finite volume approach was used to solve the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations combined with a $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model to describe the flow. The distribution of DO was determined within the control volume domain, and the transport equations of the pollutants were interpreted using a CFD model. The CFD analysis revealed that more than 60% and 30% of the relative oxygen concentration in one and two containers, respectively, was maintained when the flow acts along the six sheets of polyethylene plates. Therefore, it is clear that the abalone plate shelters should be placed parallel to the flow.

  • Viscous flows around a cooling tower fan with sweep are numerically investigated. The Navier-Stokes equations and the continuity equation are solved in the flow domain. The Reynolds stresses are modelled using the $\kappa-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The governing equations are discretized with the Finite Volume Method. The pressure and the velocity are linked with the SIMPLE algorithme. Flow and pressure characteristics around the fan are investigated. The pressure sharply increases through the fan. Pressure variations on the pressure and suction sides of the fan are well represened in the calculations. The flow streamlines in the blade passage are nearly parallel to the blade.

  • Electrorheological fluids (ERF) are suspensions which show an abrupt increase in rheological properties under electric fields. The rheological response is very rapid and reversible when the electric field is imposed and/or removed. Therefore, there are many practical applications using the ERF. The purpose of the present study is to examine the flow characteristics of ERF. First, the microscopic behavior of the ER suspension structure between two fixed parallel-plate brass electrodes applied dc high voltage for the stationary and flow of the ERF was investigated by flow visualization. The electrical and rheological properties of zeolite based ERF were reported.

  • A simple method for balancing flow rates in arrays of parallel connected flat plate solar collectors has been developed. The method is based on a computer program which solves for the flow rate through each of the collectors in a reverse return plumbed array. The analysis uses conventional "K-value" techniques and assumes the effects of density variations within the system to to be negligible. It has been found that by appropriately sizing the inlet and outlet manifolds, flow maldistribution can be nearly eliminated without resorting to expensive or complicated balancing techniques.
