COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE FRACTURE STRENGTH OF EMPRESS 2 CERAMIC AND TARGIS-VECTRIS CROWN

  • Due to an increasing interest in esthetics and concerns about toxic and allergic reactions to certain alloys, patients and dentists have been looking for metal-free tooth-colored restorations. Recent improvement in technology of new all-ceramic materials and composite materials has broadened the options for esthetic single crown restorations. The aim of this investigation was to study the fracture strength of the metal-free posterior single crowns fabricated using two recently introduced systems, Empress 2 ceramic and Targis-Vectris. Forty premolar-shaped stainless steel dies with the 1mm-wide circumferential shoulder were prepared. Ten cylindrical crowns having a diameter of 8.0mm and total height of 7.5mm were fabricated for each crown system respectively(PFM, Empress staining technique, Empress 2 layering technique, and Targis- Vectris). The crowns were filled with cement and placed on the stainless steel dies with firm finger pressure. The crowns were then stored in distilled water at room temperature for 24 hours before testing. The crowns were tested for fracture strength in an Instron universal testing machine (Instron 6022). With a crosshead speed of 1mm/min the center of the occlusal surface of the crown was loaded using a 4-mm-diameter stainless steel ball until fracture occurred. The fracture surfaces of the crowns were gold coated and examined using scanning electron microscopy(Jeol JSM-840 Joel Ltd., Akishima, Tokyo, Japan). Within the parameters of this study the following conclusions were drawn: 1. The mean fracture strength for PFM crowns was 5829(${\pm}906$)N; for Empress staining technique the fracture strength was 1697(${\pm}604$)N; for Empress 2 Layering technique the fracture strength was 1781N(${\pm}400$)N, and the fracture strength for Targis- Vectris was 3093(${\pm}475$)N. 2. The fracture strength of the PFM crowns was significantly higher than that of the Empress 2 and the Targis-Vectris crowns (P<0.05). 3. The fracture strength of the Targis-Vectris crowns was significantly higher than that of the Empress 2 crowns (P<0.05). 4. No statistical difference was found when Empress staining technique was compared with Empress 2 layering technique. 5. The SEM image of fracture surface of Empress 2 crown showed a very dense microstructure of the lithium disilicate crystals and the SEM image of fracture surface of Targis-Vectris crown showed indentations of Vectris and some fibers tom off from Vectris.

제강소 장기근무자의 소음 노출 및 청력손실과 혈압과의 관계에 관한 연구 (Long term noise exposure of steel mill workers, hearing loss and blood pressure)

  • 모 철강공장에서 1990년 8월 27일부터 9월 6일까지 실시되었던 정기 특수건강진단에 참여한 근로자 중 평균 소음노출이 $91.8{\pm}5.2dB(A)$인 고소음부서 기능직 근로자 1,034명과 $75.2{\pm}4.6dB(A)$인 저소음부서 기능직 근로자 390명 사이에 고혈압(수축기 160mmHg 이상 또는 이완기 100mmHg 이상) 유병률을 비교하고, 청력손실(1,000Hz에서 25dB 이상 또는 4,000Hz에서 40dBA이상) 여부와 고혈압 유병률과의 관계를 관찰하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 고소음부서와 저소음부서 사이에 평균 수축기 및 이완기 혈압의 차이를 보이지 않았다(p>0.05). 고소음부서와 저소음부서 사이의 고혈압 유병률은 통계적으로 유의하지는 않았으나 39세 이내의 연령군에서는 고소음부서에서 더 높았으며, $40{\sim}49$세 사이의 연령군에서는 차이가 없었고, 50세 이상의 연령군에서는 오히려 저소음부서에서 높은 경향을 보였다. 고혈압 유병률은 고연령군에서 보다 저연령군의 청력손실군에서 정상 청력군에 비해 통계적인 유의성이 없었으나 더 높은 경향을 보였다. 청력손실, 비만도지수, 연령, 음주습관 및 고혈압 가족력이 이완기 혈압의 예견지표였다(p<0.02). 청력손실은 특히 40세 이전의 연령군에서 주요 이완기혈압 예견지표로 나타났다(p<0.01).

마이크로 강섬유와 MWCNT를 혼입한 전도성 모르타르의 발열성능, 휨강도 및 미세구조 분석 (Analysis of Heat-generating Performance, Flexural Strength and Microstructure of Conductive Mortar Mixed with Micro Steel Fiber and MWCNT)

  • 본 연구에서는 마이크로 강섬유와 다중벽 탄소나노튜브(multi-walled carbon nanotube, MWCNT)를 혼입한 전도성 모르타르의 발열성능, 휨강도 및 미세구조를 분석하기 위해 실험적으로 수행하였다. 전도성 모르타르 발열성능 및 휨강도 시험에서 MWCNT의 혼입 농도는 시멘트 중량 대비 0.0wt%, 0.5wt% 및 1.0wt%로 선정하였으며, 마이크로 강섬유는 부피 대비 2.0vol%로 혼입하였다. 발열성능 실험은 다양한 인가전압 (DC 10V, 30V, 60V) 및 상이한 전극간격 (40 mm, 120 mm)을 매개변수로 수행하였으며, 양생 재령 28일에서 휨강도를 측정하여 일반 모르타르와 비교, 분석하였다. 더 나아가, 전계방사 주사전자현미경(field emission scanning electron microscope, FE-SEM)을 이용하여 전도성 모르타르의 표면 형상과 미세구조를 분석하였다. 그 결과 MWCNT의 혼입 농도와 인가전압이 증가할수록 발열성능이 향상되었으며, 전극간격이 좁을수록 발열성능이 더욱 향상되는 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 MWCNT의 혼입 농도를 1.0wt%까지 추가하더라도 발열성능은 크게 향상되지 못하였다. 휨강도 시험결과, PM 시편과 MWCNT를 혼입한 시편을 제외한 모든 시편의 평균 휨강도가 4.5 MPa 이상으로 나타나 마이크로 강섬유 혼입에 따른 높은 휨강도를 보였다. FE-SEM 이미지 분석을 통해 시멘트 매트릭스 내 마이크로 강섬유와 MWCNT 입자 사이에 전도성 네트워크가 형성되는 것을 확인하였다.

탄소강의 초석페라이트와 시멘타이트 구상화가 미끄럼마멸 거동에 미치는 영향 분석 (Effect of Pro-eutectoid Ferrite and Cementite-spheroidization on the Sliding Wear Resistance of Carbon Steels)

  • The current study elucidates the effects of cementite spheroidization and pro-eutectoid ferrite on the sliding wear resistance in medium carbon (0.45wt%C) and high carbon (1wt%C) steels. Both steels were initially heat treated to obtain a fully pearlite or ferrite + pearlite microstructure. Spheroidizing heat treatments were performed on both steels to spheroidize the pearlitic cementite. Sliding wear tests were conducted using a pin-on-disk wear tester with the steel specimens as the disk and an alumina ($Al_2O_3$) ball as the pin. The sliding wear tests were carried out at room temperature in air with humidity of $40{\pm}2%$. Adapted sliding distance and applied load was 300m and 100N, respectively. Sliding speed was 0.1m/s and the wear-track radius was 9 mm. Worn surfaces and cross-sections of the wear track were examined using an SEM. Micro Vickers hardness of the wear-track subsurface was measured as a function of depth from the worn surface. Hardness and sliding-wear resistance of both steel decreased with increased spheroidization of the cementite. The decrease was more significant in the fully pearlitic steel (1wt%C steel). The steel with the pro-eutectoid ferrite showed relatively higher wear resistance compared to the spheroidized pearlitic steel.

  • 복합소재와 금형강 간에는 열팽창계수의 차이로 인하여 성형 과정 중의 온도 구배에 따라 다른 열팽창길이를 갖는다. 따라서 금형 내에 복합소재를 삽입하여 성형을 하는 경우 복합소재의 표면에 작용하는 압력이 소재의 업체에서 추천하는 성형 압력을 유지하는지를 확인할 필요성이 있다. 본 연구에서는 온도의 차이에 따른 복합소재와 금형 사이의 압력을 유한요소해석법을 사용하여 예측하였으며 열팽창에 따른 금형의 길이를 측정함으로써 해석의 정확성을 검증하였다. 각 온도에서의 해석과 실험값의 차이로써 매우 근사한 값을 얻을 수 있었으며, 틈새 예측 값의 목표치인 ${\pm}0.05mm$ 안에 들어오는 것을 확인하였다. 이를 통하여 복합소재에 작용하는 압력을 추정한 해석값이 신뢰할 수준임을 알 수 있었다.

  • 폴리에틸렌 코팅 가스배관의 결함탐상을 위해 광범위 비파괴탐상기법인 유도초음파를 적용하였다. 가스배관의 내경은 190.7mm, 두께는 5.3mm, 그리고 바깥 표면은 $1.9{\pm}0.5mm$의 폴리에틸렌 층으로 코팅되어 있다. 폴리에틸렌 코팅 배관의 외면에 0.5MHz 탐촉자와 가변각 웨지를 사용하여, 비축대칭 유도초음파를 가진 시켰다. 주파수와 위상속도 조정을 통하여 가스배관의 결함 탐상을 위한 적절한 모드를 찾아내고, 모드의 특성을 단시간 퓨리어 변환을 이용하여 분석하였다. 결함탐상 결과를 두께 손실 및 원통형 관통결함에 대한 인위결함에 대해 나타내었다. 그리고 가스배관에 인위적으로 삽입한 두께 손실과 원통형 관통결함에 대한 검출 성능을 평가하였다.

Improved structures of stainless steel current collector increase power generation of microbial fuel cells by decreasing cathodic charge transfer impedance

  • Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is an innovative environmental and energy system that converts organic wastewater into electrical energy. For practical implementation of MFC as a wastewater treatment process, a number of limitations need to be overcome. Improving cathodic performance is one of major challenges, and introduction of a current collector can be an easy and practical solution. In this study, three types of current collectors made of stainless steel (SS) were tested in a single-chamber cubic MFC. The three current collectors had different contact areas to the cathode (P $1.0cm^2$; PC $4.3cm^2$; PM $6.5cm^2$) and increasing the contacting area enhanced the power and current generations and coulombic and energy recoveries by mainly decreasing cathodic charge transfer impedance. Application of the SS mesh to the cathode (PM) improved maximum power density, optimum current density and maximum current density by 8.8%, 3.6% and 6.7%, respectively, comparing with P of no SS mesh. The SS mesh decreased cathodic polarization resistance by up to 16%, and cathodic charge transfer impedance by up to 39%, possibly because the SS mesh enhanced electron transport and oxygen reduction reaction. However, application of the SS mesh had little effect on ohmic impedance.

Microinjection of Glutamate into the Amygdala Modulates Nociceptive and Cardiovascular Response in Freely Moving Rats

  • This study was performed to examine the mean arterial pressure and nociceptive jaw opening reflex after microinjection of glutamate into the amygdala in freely moving rats, and to investigate the mechanisms of antinociceptive action of amygdala. Animals were anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium (40 mg/kg, ip). A stainless steel guide cannula (26 gauge) was implanted in the amygdala and lateral ventricle. Stimulating and recording electrodes were implanted into each of the incisor pulp and anterior digastric muscle. Electrodes were led subcutaneously to the miniature cranial connector sealed on the top of the skull with acrylic resin. After 48 hours of recovery from surgery, mean arterial pressure and digastric electromyogram (dEMG) were monitored in freely moving rats. Electrical shocks (200 ${\mu}sec$ duration, $0.5{\sim}2$ mA intensity) were delivered at 0.5 Hz to the dental pulp every 2 minutes. After injection of 0.35 M glutamate into the amygdala, mean arterial pressure was increased by $8{\pm}2$ mmHg and dEMG was suppressed to $71{\pm}5%$ of the control. Injection of 0.7 M glutamate elevated mean arterial pressure by $25{\pm}5$ mmHg and suppressed dEMG to $20{\pm}7%$ of the control. The suppression of dEMG were maintained for 30 minutes. Naloxone, an opioid receptor antagonist, inhibited the suppression of dEMG elicited by amygdaloid injection of glutamate from $28{\pm}4\;to\;68{\pm}5%$ of the control. Methysergide, a serotonin receptor antagonist, also inhibited the suppression of dEMG from $33{\pm}5\;to\;79{\pm}4%$ of the control. However, phentolamine, an ${\alpha}-adrenergic$ receptor antagonist, did not affect the suppression of dEMG. These results suggest that the amygdala can modulate both cardiovascular and nociceptive responses and that the antinociception of amygdala seems to be attributed to an augmentation of descending inhibitory influences on nociceptive pathways via serotonergic and opioid pathways.

충청남도 태안 교외대기 PM10, PM2.5의 중금속 농도 특성과 기원 추적연구 (A study of origins and characteristics of metallic elements in PM10 and PM2.5 at a suburban site in Taean, Chungchengnam-do)

  • Chungcheongnam-do has various emission sources, including large-scale facilities such as power plants, steel and petrochemical industry complexes, which can lead to the severe PM pollution. Here, we measured concentrations of PM10, PM2.5, and its metallic elements at a suburban site in Taean, Chungcheongnam-do from September 2017 to June 2022. During the measurement period, the average concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 were 58.6 ㎍/m3 (9.6~379.0 ㎍/m3) and 35.0 ㎍/m3 (6.1~132.2 ㎍/m3), respectively. The concentration of PM10 and PM2.5 showed typical seasonal variation, with higher concentration in winter and lower concentration in summer. When high concentrations of PM2.5 occurred, particulary in winter, the fraction of Zn and Pb components considerably increased, indicating a significant contribution of Zn and Pb to high-PM2.5 concentration. In addition, Zn and Pb exhibited the highest correlation coefficient among all other metallic elements of PM2.5. A backward trajectory cluster analysis and CPF model were performed to examine the origin of PM2.5. The high concentration of PM2.5 was primarily influenced by emissions from industrial complexes located in the northeast and northwest areas.

SM490A TMC 후판강재의 소재 및 용접부 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on Structural Characteristics of SM490A TMC Thick Steel Plates)

  • Thermo Mechanical Control Process(TMCP) 강재는 열간압연시에 압연 온도를 제어하면서 경우에 따라 압연직후 냉각, 열처리하여 안정된 조직으로 압연, 제조된 강재이다. 본 연구에서는 극후판 TMCP강재의 소재특성과 건축구조용 강재로서의 적합성과 특성을 밝히기 위하여 화학성분 및 조직특성, 내력 및 기계적 특성, 사용성 및 인성, 등으로 분류하여 소재특성과 용접특성을 분석하였다. 실험결과, 대상강재는 극후판에서도 설계기준강도를 만족하고 낮은 탄소당량 ($C_{eq}$) 및 용접갈라짐 감수성조성($P_cm$)과 저항복비 등이 확보되었다. 또한, 기준온도(${\pm}0^{\circ}C$)는 물론 $-60^{\circ}C$의 극저온에서도 충분한 충격흡수에너지값으로 양호한 인성의 소재특성을 나타냈고, 용접부에서도 경화현상이 저감되고, 용접부의 인성 및 내력이 충분한 것으로 나타났다.
