  • This study was conducted to evaluate the internal quality of Korean red ginseng using VIS/NIR transmittance spectra. To classify the internal qualities, partial least squares(PLS) regression was conducted. The main results are as follows: To develop the PLS model, several wave bands were divided and incorporated into the model. Among the bands, the wavelength range of 550-1,020nm, excluded noise signal, showed the best evaluation results. Effect of step size on the performance of quality evaluation showed optimal at 15 steps. In order to enhance the accuracy of quality evaluation, the abnormal spectrum shape was considered first and then the PLS model was applied. Among the 150 samples, 12 samples were evaluated by the spectrum shape. In this study, to develop the optimal PLS regression model, among the 150 samples, 138 samples was used with exception of 12 samples which could evaluate the spectrum shape. The result of quality evaluation was promising as SEC and correlation coefficient were 1.09 and 0.967, respectively, and SEP and correlation coefficient were 1.04 and 0.958, respectively.

  • Uncertainty in large-scale tourism development is the main reason of the delay on the project. The purpose of this study is to identify the status and effect of this large-scale tourism development project. Huge amount of funds has to be invested prior to the development of this project and with high uncertainty of successful development, the procedure is the most important factor of this project. Therefore, under the basis of these assumptions, we operated a PLS regression analysis to see any factors that has influence during the procedure of the project. The result of the PLS regression analysis resulted that among all of the factors, the participation and role of regional community is the highest priority. In order to lead large-scale tourism development to success is to listen to the ideas of various project-related personnels and form a public - private partnership for evaluation of the project.

  • Purpose: This study evaluated the feasibility of using a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) method as a preprocessing tool for visible/near-infrared spectroscopy (VIS/NIRS) with a spectroscopic transmittance dataset for predicting the internal quality of cherry tomatoes. Methods: VIS/NIRS was used to acquire transmittance spectrum data, to which a DWT was applied to generate new variables in the wavelet domain, which replaced the original spectral signal for subsequent partial least squares (PLS) regression analysis and prediction modeling. The DWT concept and its importance are described with emphasis on the properties that make the DWT a suitable transform for analyzing spectroscopic data. Results: The $R^2$ values and root mean squared errors (RMSEs) of calibration and prediction models for the firmness, sugar content, and titratable acidity of cherry tomatoes obtained by applying the DWT to a PLS regression with a set of spectra showed more enhanced results than those of each model obtained from raw data and mean normalization preprocessing through PLS regression. Conclusions: The developed DWT-incorporated PLS models using the db5 wavelet base and selected approximation coefficients indicate their feasibility as good preprocessing tools by improving the prediction of firmness and titratable acidity for cherry tomatoes with respect to $R^2$ values and RMSEs.

  • A unified procedure for principal component regression (PCR), partial least squares (PLS) and ordinary least squares (OLS) is proposed. The process gives solutions for PCR, PLS and OLS in a unified and non-iterative way. This enables us to see the interrelationships among the three regression coefficient vectors, and it is seen that the so-called E-matrix in the solution expression plays the key role in differentiating the methods. In addition to setting out the procedure, the paper also supplies a robust numerical algorithm for its implementation, which is used to show how the procedure performs on a real world data set.

  • PLS methods are suited for regressing q-variate Y variables on p-variate X variables even in the presence of multicollinearity problem among X variables. Consequently, they are useful for analyzing datasets with smaller number of observations compared to the number of variables, such as NIR(near-infrared) spectroscopy data in chemometrics. In this study, we propose two visualizing methods of p-variate X variables and q-variate Y variable that can be used in connection with PLS analysis.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate firmness, and sweetness index (SI) of tomatoes (Lycopersicum esculentum) by using hyperspectral imaging (HSI) in the range of 1000-1400 nm. The mean spectra of the 95 matured tomato samples were extracted from the hyperspectral images, and the reference firmness and sweetness index of the same sample were measured and calibrated with their corresponding spectral data by partial least squares (PLS) regression with different preprocessing method. The results showed that the regression model developed by PLS regression based on Savitzky-Golay (S-G) second-derivative preprocessed spectra resulted in better performance for firmness, and SI of tomatoes compared to models developed by other preprocessing methods, with correlation coefficients (rpred) of 0.82, and 0.74 with standard error of prediction (SEP) of 0.86 N, and 0.63 respectively. Then, the feature wavelengths were identified using model-based variable selection method, i.e., variable important in projection (VIP), resulting from the PLS regression analyses and finally chemical images were derived by applying the respective regression coefficient on the spectral image in a pixel-wise manner. The resulting chemical images provided detailed information on firmness, and sweetness index (SI) of tomatoes. Therefore, these research demonstrated that HIS technique has a potential for rapid and non-destructive evaluation of the firmness and sweetness index of tomatoes.

  • Domestic industrial complexes have more loss competitiveness due to their deterioration length and environmental problems. Therefore, it is necessary to suggest the direction of realignment as advanced industrial estates and establish new alternative plans for improving the quality of public and environmental designs as well as reinforcing the competitive power. This study examined the design planning factors affecting the service users' satisfaction in the Seoul Digital Industrial Complex through a PLS regression model. The research result showed that 12 crucial design planning factors out of a total 31 planning factors have a more than 1.0 VIP. In addition, 8 comparatively important planning aspects that were measured between 0.9 and 1.0 were also investigated. These factors were the strategic design planning factors estimating the quantitative priority while enforcing the design improvement project and they should be considered as a useful material for strengthening the competitive power of the Seoul Digital Industrial Complex.

  • Partial Least Squares (PLS) calibration performance has been systematically investigated by changing spectral resolutions of near-infrared (NIR) spectra. For this purpose, synthetic samples simulating naphtha were prepared to examine the calibration performance in complex chemical matrix. These samples were composed of $C_6-C_9$ normal paraffin, iso-paraffin, naphthene, and aromatic hydrocarbons. NIR spectra with four different resolutions of 4, 8, 16, and 32$cm^{-1}$ were collected and then PLS regression was performed. For PLS calibration, five different group compositions (such as total paraffin content) and six different pure components (such as benzene concentration) were selected. The overall results showed that at least 8$cm^{-1}$ resolution was required to resolve the complex chemical matrix such as naphtha. It was found that the influence of resolution on the PLS calibration was varied by the spectral features of a component.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the firmness and the sweetness index (SI) of tomatoes with a hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technique within the wavelength range of 1000 - 1550 nm. The hyperspectral images of 95 tomatoes were acquired with a push-broom hyperspectral reflectance imaging system, from which the mean spectra of each tomato were extracted from the regions of interest. The reference firmness and sweetness index of the same sample was measured and calibrated with their corresponding spectral data by partial least squares (PLS) regression with different preprocessing methods. The calibration model developed by PLS regression based on the Savitzky-Golay second-derivative preprocessed spectra resulted in a better performance for both the firmness and the SI of the tomatoes compared to models developed by other preprocessing methods. The correlation coefficients ($R_{pred}$) were 0.82, and 0.74 with a standard error of prediction of 0.86 N, and 0.63, respectively. Then, the feature wavelengths were identified using a model-based variable selection method, i.e., variable importance in projection, from the PLS regression analyses. Finally, chemical images were derived by applying the respective regression coefficients on the spectral image in a pixel-wise manner. The resulting chemical images provided detailed information on the firmness and the SI of the tomatoes. The results show that the proposed HSI technique has potential for rapid and non-destructive evaluation of firmness and the sweetness index of tomatoes.

  • 2D spectrofluorometer produces many spectral data during fermentation processes. The fluorescence spectra are analyzed using chemometric methods such as principal component analysis (PCA), principal component regression (PCR) and partial least square regression (PLS). Analysis of the spectral data by PCA results in scores and loadings that are visualized in score-loading plots and used to monitor a few fermentation processes by S. cerevisae and recombinant E. coli. Two chemometric models were established to analyze the correlation between fluorescence spectra and process variables using PCR and PLS, and PLS was found to show slightly better calibration and prediction performance than PCR.
