A novel pneumatic artificial muscle actuator (PAM actuator), which has achieved increased popularity to provide the advantages such as high strength and high power/weight ratio, low cost, compactness, ease of maintenance, cleanliness, readily available and cheap power source, inherent safety and mobility assistance to humans performing tasks, has been regarded during the recent decades as an interesting alternative to hydraulic and electric actuators. In order to realize satisfactory control performance, a variable damper Magneto Rheological Brake (MRB), Is equipped to the Joint of the manipulator. Superb mixture of conventional PID controller and a phase plane switching control method brings us a novel controller. This proposed controller is appropriate for a kind of plants with nonlinearity, uncertainties and disturbances. The experiments were carried out in practical PAM manipulator and the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm was demonstrated through experiments, which had proved that the stability of the manipulator can be improved greatly in a high gain control by using MRB with phase plane switching control method and without regard for the changes of external inertia loads.
Pitching machines have been around for many years for casual amusement purpose or professional athletes' training usage, and so forth. The current pitching machines are usually built on the firm ground and do not have any mobility function. In this paper, we develop a pitching machine that has both ball-shooting and mobility functions. Our developed pitching machine consists of two parts. The upper body part has a function of shooting a ball using two DC motors and the lower body part has a function of mobility like mobile robots by using two wheels governed by DC motors. All these functions are operated wirelessly by Android smartphones via bluetooth. The control of each DC motor is done by ${\epsilon}$-PID control method in which the gain tuning is simplied by using a single parameter ${\epsilon}$. Simulation and actual experiment show that our developed pitching machine has both nontrivial shooting and mobility features.
The main objective of this paper is to develop an innovative methodology for the vibration suppression control of the multiple degrees-of-freedom (MDOF) flexible structure. The proposed structure represented in this research as a clamped-free-free-free truss type plate is rotated by motors. The controller has two loops for tracking and vibration suppression. In addition to stabilizing the actual system, the proposed feedback control is based on a genetic algorithm (GA) to seek the primary optimal control gain for tracking and stabilization purposes. Moreover, input shaping is introduced for the control scheme that limits motion-induced elastic vibration by shaping the reference command. Experimental results are presented, demonstrating that, in the control loop, roll and yaw angles track control and elastic mode stabilization. It was also demonstrated that combining the input shaper with the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) feedback method has been shown to yield improved performance in controlling the flexible structure system. The broad range of problems discussed in this research is valuable in civil, mechanical, and aerospace engineering for flexible structures with MDOM motion.
We deal with the sliding mode control using the time delay estimation. The time delay estimation is able to weaken the need for obtaining a quantitative plant model analogous to the real plant so the sliding mode control with a time delay estimation (SMCTE) is very suitable for plant such as SMA actuators whose quantitative model is difficult to obtain. We have already studied the application of the time delay control (TDC) to SMA actuators in other literature. Based on the previous study on the TDC, we developed the gain tuning method for the SMCTE, which results were nearly the same as the TDC. With respect to the step response, the SMCTE proved its predominance in a comparison with other control schemes such as the PID control and the relay control. As well as the contribution of the above control methodology, the model identification for SMA actuators has also been studied. The dynamics for an SMA actuator was newly derived using the modified Liang's model. The derived dynamics showed a continuity at the change of the phase transformation process but the original Liang's model could not.
The objectives of this research are development of guidance, navigation and control system for RUAV on virtual instrumentation and real flight test. For this research, the system is divided to DAQ (data acquisition) section, actuator section and controller section. And the hardware and software on each sections are realized on LabVIEW base. Waypoint guidance and control of auto flight are realized using PID gain tuning and waypoint vector tracking guidance algorism. For safe flight test, auto/manual switching module isolated from FCS (Flight Control System) is developed. By using the switch module, swift mode change was achieved during emergency flight case. Consequently, a meter level error of flight performance is achieved.
This study proposes a method for improvement of PD type fuzzy controller. The method includes self tuner using gradient algorithm that is one of the optimization algorithms. The proposed controller improves simple Takagi-Sugeno type FLC (Fuzzy Logic Control) system. The simple Takagi-Sugeno type FLC system changes nonlinear characteristic to linear parameters of consequent membership function. The simple FLC system could control the system by calibrating parameter of consequent membership function that changes the system response. While the determination on parameter of the simple FLC system works well only partially, the proposed method is needed to determine parameters that work for overall response. The simple FLC system doesn't predict the response characteristics. While the simple FLC system works just like proportional part of PID, our system includes derivative part to predict the next response. The proposed controller is constructed with P part and D part FLC system that characteristic parameter on system response is changed by self tuner for effective response. Since the proposed controller doesn't include integral part, it can't eliminate steady state error. So we include a gain to eliminate the steady state error.
This paper presents details on a tube inspection robotic system and a positioning method of the robot for a steam generator (SG) in nuclear power plants (NPPs). The robotic system is separated into three parts for easy handling, which reduces the radiation exposure during installation. The system has a supporting leg to increase the rigidity of the robot base. Since there are several thousands of tubes to be inspected inside a SG, it is very important to position the tool of the robot at the right tubes even if the robot base is positioned inaccurately during the installation. In order to obtain absolute accuracy of a position, the robot kinematics was mathematically modeled with the modified DH(Denavit-Hartenberg) model and calibrated on site using tube holes as calibration points. To tune the PID gains of a commercial motor driver systematically, the time delay control (TDC) based gain tuning method was adopted. To verify the performance of the robotic system, experiments on a Framatomes 51B Model type SG mockup were undertaken.
This paper proposes a decoupler design method to reduce interaction between exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) systems in passenger car diesel engines. The EGR valve and VGT vane are respectively used to control air-to-fuel ratio (AFR) of exhaust gas and intake pressure. A plant model for EGR and VGT systems is defined by a first order transfer function plus time-delay model, and the loop interaction between these systems is analyzed using a relative normalized gain array (RNGA) method. In order to deal with the loop interaction, a design method for simplified decoupler is applied to this study. Feedback control algorithms for AFR and intake pressure are composed of a compensator using PID control method and a prefilter. The proposed decoupler is evaluated through engine experiment, and the results successfully showed that the loop interaction between EGR and VGT systems can be reduced by using the proposed decoupler. Furthermore, it presents stable performance even off from the designed operating point.
Recently, applications of plasma display to the large public display and transparent display gain much attention. With this background, we report characteristics of opposite electrodes discharge cell with long electrode gap in comparison with conventional co-planar surface discharge. The cell size of test panel is $2950{\mu}m{\times}840{\mu}m$, which corresponds to that of the display having diagonal size of 130" with XGA resolution. Electrode gap of co-planar and opposite electrode structure are $240{\mu}m$ and $500{\mu}m$ respectively. These gap dimensions provide similar driving voltage windows. Experimental results show that opposite discharge provides approximately four fold higher luminous efficacy compared with that of the surface discharge. Resulting efficacy is found to be higher than 19 lm/W in green phosphor with 10 KHz continuous pulse operation.
This paper proposes actuator fault detection and adaptive fault-tolerant control algorithms using performance index and human-like learning for longitudinal autonomous vehicles. Conventional longitudinal controller for autonomous driving consists of supervisory, upper level and lower level controllers. In this paper, feedback control law and PID control algorithm have been used for upper level and lower level controllers, respectively. For actuator fault-tolerant control, adaptive rule has been designed using the gradient descent method with estimated coefficients. In order to adjust the control parameter used for determination of adaptation gain, human-like learning algorithm has been designed based on perceptron learning method using control errors and control parameter. It is designed that the learning algorithm determines current control parameter by saving it in memory and updating based on the cost function-based gradient descent method. Based on the updated control parameter, the longitudinal acceleration has been computed adaptively using feedback law for actuator fault-tolerant control. The finite window-based performance index has been designed for detection and evaluation of actuator performance degradation using control error.
