In this study, PEBAX/GO-PEI and PEBAX/ZIF-8@GO-PEI composite membranes were prepared by varying the contents of GO and ZIF-8@GO in PEBAX, and also the gas permeation characteristics of N2 and CO2 was studied. Overall, the N2 and CO2 permeability of the PEBAX/GO-PEI composite membrane decreased as the GO content increased, and the CO2/N2 selectivity slightly increased. In the case of PEBAX/ZIF-8@GO-PEI composite membrane, the permeability of N2 decreased, but CO2 increased to 1 wt% of ZIF-8@GO and then decreased in the content thereafter. The CO2/N2 selectivity at 1 wt% of ZIF-8@GO was 92.3, showing the highest selectivity. This is thought to be due to the greatest effect of GO and ZIF-8 with good affinity for CO2 alongside the effect of porosity ZIF-8 while improving compatibility with PEBAX and dispersing evenly. In addition, PEBAX/ZIF-8@GO-PEI composite membrane improved both CO2 permeability and CO2/N2 selectivity than those of the PEBAX-PEI and PEBAX/GO-PEI membranes, except for ZIF-8@GO 5 wt%. The result was close to the Robeson upper bound.
In this study, a mixed matrix membrane was prepared by varying the contents of GO and PEI-GO synthesized in PEBAX2533, and the permeation characteristics of N2 and CO2 were studied. The N2 and CO2 permeability of the PEBAX/GO mixed membrane decreased as the GO content increased, and showed the highest CO2/N2 selectivity of 58.9 at GO 0.3 wt%. For the PEBAX/PEI-GO mixed membrane, the N2 permeability decreased as the PEI-GO content increased, and the CO2 permeability showed a different trend according to the PEI-GO content. Overall, the CO2/N2 selectivity was higher than that of the PEBAX/GO mixed membrane. In particular, PEI-GO 0.3 wt% showed the highest CO2/N2 selectivity of 73.5 among the mixed membranes, and a positive result was obtained as it was located above the Robeson upper bound. This is believed to be due to the molecular sieving channel effect resulting from the original GO structure, the functional groups present in the structure of GO having affinity for CO2, and the effect of amine bound to PEI by modifying GO into PEI.
In this study, a mixed matrix membrane was prepared by varying the contents of PEI-GO@ZIF-8 synthesized in PEBAX 2533, and the permeation characteristics of N2 and CO2 were studied. The N2 permeability of the PEBAX/PEIGO@ZIF-8 mixed matrix membrane decreased as the PEI-GO@ZIF-8 content increased, and the CO2 permeability showed different trends depending on the PEI-GO@ZIF-8 content. The CO2 permeability increased in pure PEBAX membrane up to PEBAX/PEI-GO@ZIF-8 0.1 wt%, but decreased at the subsequent content. The PEI-GO@ZIF-8 0.1 wt% mixed matrix membrane had a CO2 permeability of 221.9 Barrer and a CO2/N2 selectivity of 60.0, showing the highest permeation properties with improved CO2 permeability and CO2/N2 selectivity among the prepared mixed matrix membrane and we obtained a result that reached the Robeson upper-bound. This is due to the -COOH, -O-, and -OH functional groups of GO and the amine group bonded to PEI, which interact friendly with CO2, and the effect of ZIF-8, which causes gate-opening for CO2 while the fillers are evenly dispersed in PEBAX.
Three derivatives of poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) are prepared by Ni(II)-template condensation with glyoxal(GO): PEI[Ni(II)-GO]$_{0.08}$ (1), PEI[Ni(II)-GO]$_{0.03}$ (2), and lau$_{0.18}$PEI[Ni(II)-GO]$_{0.03}$ (3). The contents of Ni(II)-macrocyclic center of 1-3 are 8%, 3%, or 3%, respectively, of the monomer residues, and 18% of monomer residues for 3 are laurylated. The pH profiles for k$_{cal}$ and k$_m$ for the deacylation of 4-carboxy-2-nitrophenyl acetate are measured. The relative magnitude of the parameters for 1-3 and different shapes of the pH profiles for 1-3 are explained in terms of the electrostatic and the hydrophobic effects exerted by the metal centers and lauryl groups. For the artificial metalloenzymes built on PEI, therefore, the ionization of functional groups and the affinity toward counter-anions can be controlled by adjusting charge density and the content of hydrophobic groups.
Blends of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), polyethyleneimine (PEI), and graphene oxide (GO) were prepared by solution casting method. Calorimetric thermal properties of the blends were investigated. The $T_gs$ of PVA/PEI blends were higher than the $T_gs$ of either of the component polymers at low concentrations of PEI. These abnormal increases of $T_gs$ may be due to the negative entropy of mixing which is associated with strong hydrogen bonding between PVA and PEI. The degree of depression of $T^0_ms$ was not reduced by the negative entropy of mixing, since strong hydrogen bonding also causes an increase in the magnitude of negative ${\chi}$ between PVA and PEI. The $T_g$ of PVA was increased significantly by adding 0.7 wt.% GO into PVA. The magnitude of negative ${\chi}$ was increased by adding GO into the blends of PVA and PEI.

An amperometric sensor for measuring indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) was studied based on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) coated with a reduced graphene oxide composite electrocatalyst. The PEI-GO dispersion is uniformly formed through a nucleophilic substitution reaction between the active amine group of Polyethyleneimine (PEI) and the epoxide group exposed on the surface of graphene oxide. And The 3-dimensional PEI-rGO AG (Polyethyleneimine-reduced graphene oxide aerogel) complex was easily prepared through simple heat treatment of the combined PEI-GO dispersion. The proposed composite catalyst electrode, PEI-rGO AG/SPCE, showed a two linear relationship in the low and high concentrations in IAA detection, and the linear equation was Ipa = 0.2883C + 0.0883 (R2=0.9230) at low concentration and Ipa = 0.00464C + 0.6623 (R2=0.9894) at high concentration was proposed, and the detection limit was calculated to be 203.5nM±33.2nM. These results showed the applicability of the PEI-rGO AG composite catalyst as an electrode material for electrocatalysts for the detection of IAA.
It has been found that a number of diseases are associated with mutations in the mitochondrial DNA. Therapeutic gene delivery to mitochondria has been suggested as a clinical option for these diseases. In this study, we developed a gene carrier to mitochondria by the conjugation of mitochondrial leader peptide (LP) to polyethylenimine (PEI). Mitochondrial LP conjugated PEI (PEI-LP) was synthesized with low molecular weight PEI (2,000 Da, PEI2K). Gel retardation assay showed that PEI2K-LP formed complexes at a 1.0/1 weight ratio. In addition, PEI2K-LP protected DNA from the enzymatic degradation for at least 60 min, while naked DNA was completely degraded within 20 min. PEI2K-LP was compared with LP conjugated high molecular weight PEI (25,000 Da, PEI25K) in terms of toxicity and delivery efficiency. MTT assay showed that PEI2K-LP had much lower cytotoxicity than PEI25K-LP to 293 cells. In addition, cell-free DNA delivery assay showed that PEI2K-LP delivered more DNA to mitochondria at a 1.8/1 weight ratio than naked DNA or PEI. This result suggests that PEI2K-LP may be useful for the development of mitochondrial gene therapy system with lower cytotoxicity.
Pectinesterase inhibitor(PEI) of ripened kiwi fruit(Actinidia chinensis) was separated with affinity chromatography using CNBr-activated Sepharose 4B being covalently bound by orange pectinesterse(PE). The affinity resin strongly and selectively bound PEI, which could be eluted in high yield as a single peak by pH 9.5 without loss of inhibitory activity. The separated PEI had maintained almost inhibitory activity at $-25^{\circ}C$ and $5^{\circ}C$ during 30 days but lost it at room temperature in 4 weeks. The PEI possessed a molecular weight of 16.6 KDa, as estimated by 12.5% SDS-PAGE. PEI had optimum pH of 7.5, optimum temperature of below $10^{\circ}C$ and stability up to $70^{\circ}C$. Also, optimum inhibitory activity for PEI was obtained in 0.2 M NaCl of substrate solutions. The kind of inhibition on tomato pectinesterase was found to be noncompetitive, using citrus pectin as substrate. Fresh orange juice added with crude PEI extracts maintained almost the same cloud stability as pasteurized juice. In case of apple juice, the addition of crude PEI extracts to apple juice had decrease of L-ascorbic acid with nearly no effect on cloud loss.
ZnS nanowalls, microspheres and rice-shaped nanoparticles have been successfully grown on graphene oxide (GO) sheets by the hydrothermal method. The morphologies, structures, chemical compositions and optical properties of the as-synthesized GO/ZnS have been characterized by X-ray power diffraction, energy dispersive spectrometer, scanning electron microscope, Raman spectra, photoluminescence spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy. It was found that the concentration of CTAB and the reaction temperature were important in the formation of GO/ZnS microstructures. The photocatalytic activity of the as-synthesized GO/ZnS was investigated through the photocatalytic degradation of textile dyeing waste. Results showed that the catalytic activity of the GO/ZnS porous spheres to methyl orange and methylene blue is higher than those of other samples. The degradation rates of methyl orange and methylene blue by porous spheres in 50 min were 97.6 and 97.1%, respectively. This is mainly attributed to the large specific surface area of GO/ZnS porous spheres and high separation efficiency between photogenerated electron and hole pairs.
Graphene-coated polymer particles have attracted research interests due to their emerging applications derived from their controlled structure and morphology. To control the properties of graphene oxide (GO)-polystyrene (PS) composite particles, the adsorption time and instantaneous adsorption conditions were investigated by varying their mixing method. Polystyrene particles prepared by emulsion polymerization were modified to have positive surface charge by adsorption of polyethylene imine (PEI) on the surface of PS particles. GO prepared by the chemical exfoliation method had negative surface charge from the oxygenated groups. The adsorption of the negatively charged GOs onto the positively charged PS particles was successfully completed, and it was found that a longer adsorption time and a greater difference in the instantaneous relative concentration led PS-GO particles to have more homogeneously coated surfaces without aggregation.
