Research on Characteristics of Multifunctional Soil Binder Based on Polyacrylamide (폴리아크릴아마이드를 기반으로 하는 다기능성 토양안정제의 특성에 관한 연구)

  • For the efficient recovering of collapsed sloped soil, using a soil binder that can support the soil strongly and help the growth of plants is very important. The soil binder should also have functions of recovering the soil ecologically as well as be environmental friendly materials. In this research, optimum values of the water content and permeability and direct shear strength were searched by adding the water absorbent and coagulant into the soil binder. The polyacrylamide (PAM) with various anionic strength, super absorbent polymer (SAP) and cellulose ether (CE) were used as a soil binder, water absorbent and coagulant, respectively. Effects of the soil binder on the characteristics of soil were observed by changing the mixing ratio of PAM, SAP and CE. Experimental results showed that the soil binder increased the direct shear strength tens of times and the water content around two times, whereas decreased the water permeability. Also, the addition of CE to increase the coagulation of SAP increased more of the direct shear strength and water content.

  • This study explored the compacition characteristics of organic weathered soils. Weathered soils were collected around the Gwangju University in Jinwol-dong, Gwangju city, and coal was used as organic material. Weathered soils were mixed with coal so that the ratio of organic elements against mixed soil can be 0%, 25%, 50%, and 75% respectively. Compaction tests were carried out on these organic mixture soils in different ratios of organic materials. And soap water instead of water in compaction tests was used. Through this study, We knew that the bigger the organic material ratio was, the more the optimum moisture content increased and the less the maximum dry unit weight reduced. In case of using small compaction energy, using soap water instead of water improved the compaction efficiency a little.

Changes in Antioxidant Activity with Temperature and Time in Chrysanthemum indicum L. (Gamguk) Teas During Elution Processes in Hot Water

  • Determining the elution of water-soluble substances from herbal teas is an important factor in their efficient use in terms of taste, perfume, and content of health-related components. The antioxidant activity and content of catechins in commercial Chrysanthemum indicum (gamguk) teas were determined for optimum elution conditions. The water extract of gamguk teas did not differ significantly in yield compared to methanol extracts and showed stronger antioxidant activity. Catechin contents in gamguk teas were 8-18% of the extracts when individual peaks in high-performance liquid chromatography analysis were compared to standard catechin peaks. Gamguk teas exhibited faster release of antioxidants, and the antioxidant activity was positively correlated with the thermal treatments. Gukhwacha (GC) was the best tea for rapid release (30 sec) of antioxidants with the $50^{\circ}C$ treatment, whereas antioxidants in other teas were relatively slower released.

Effect of Trinexapac-ethyl on the growth and changes of soil water content in bentgrass green (생장조절제 처리가 bentgrass 생육과 토양 수분이동에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate an efficiency of plant growth regulator trinexapacethy(Primo) on the growth response of bentgrass and the change to soil water content in bentgrass green. Based on the results of the study, the following results were observed. 1. During four weeks after treatment, the visual color and turfgrass density of all the treated plots with trinexapac-ethyl(Primo) were more improved rather than without. Two treatments trinexapac-ethyl /$0.02mL\m^2$ and $0.04mL/\m^2$ were more favorable than other treatments. 2. It suggested that optimum rate to reduce the bentgrass growth and to increase the turfgrass density was the trinexapac-ethyl $0.04mL/\m^2$. 3. For six weeks after treatment, all treated plots were not significantly different (P<0.05) in turfgrass root length and root dry weitht. 4. In the treated plots with trinexapac-ethyl $0.04mL/\m^2$ for 25days in bentgrass green, soil water consumption was approximately 35% to 40% compare to the non-treated control.

Study on the Determination of the Amount of Added Water for Rice Cooking by Extrusion Test of Cooked Rice (밥의 압출시험에 의한 취반가수량 결정에 관한 연구)

  • The amount of added water for rice cooking was determined by extrusion test and sensory evaluation of cooked rice. The extrusion force was positively correlated with hardness and negatively correlated with moisture content and wetness of cooked rice. The extrusion force and moisture content of cooked rice were 57.9 kg and 62.3% respectively at the 'medium' wetness (neither too hard and dry nor too soft and watery) of cooked rice. The optimum water to rice ratio for the cooked rice haying 'medium' wetness was 1.46.

Effect of Kugija (Lycium chinense Miller) Extract on the Physicochemical Properties of Nabak kimchi during Fermentation (구기자 추출액 첨가가 나박김치의 발효 중 이화학적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Kugija was added to Nabak kimchi to improve the quality and preservation and the optimum addition level was assessed. Kugija extract was prepared by boiling kugija fruits, at different ratios (0, 1, 3, 5, 7%; w/v) in water for 30 minutes. The changes in the physicochemical properties of the Nabak kimchi were measured during storage for 25 days at 10?, and compared to a control (without kugija). The pH was decreased in all treatments. Following the fermentation of Nabak kimchi, the total acidity values were inversely proportional the pH changes according to the nature of mutual dependence. However, in short term, during the initial 7 days of fermentation, the total acidity values decreased with increasing concentrations of kugija extract, whereas the trend was reversed after day 10. Total vitamin C content was directly proportional to the concentration of kugija extract and was decreased with the laps of fermentation. Up to day 25, 7% treatment showed the highest vitamin C content, but at 25 days 1% and 3% treatments ranked the first. The mont of reducing sugar was proportional to the concentration of kugija extract however, the difference of values between all treatments became almost indiscernible after day 25. Turbidity values were generally increased in all samples during fermentation period, although only to a limited extent. The lowest turbidity was shown at 3% treatment up to day 16. Total color difference values were increased up to day 16, but then decreased. The optimum level of kugija extract in Nabak kimchi, as determined through these experiments, was between 1 to 3% per added water content, and was preferably 3% for color and fermentation-retarding effect of the product. Kugija extract could be applied for improving the quality and preservation of traditionally prepared Nabak kimchi.

Effect of Co-initiator on the Size Distribution of the Stable Poly(Styrene-co-Divinylbenzene) Microspheres in Acetone/Water Mixture

  • Stable poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) [P(St-co-DVB)] micro spheres with narrow size distribution were synthesized in the presence of 2,2'-azobis(2,4-dimethyl valeronitrile) (V-65) and co-initiator in an acetone/water mixture in the precipitation polymerization at $53^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. Potassium peroxodisulfate (KPS), ammonium peroxodisulfate (APS) and sodium peroxodisulfate (NaPS) were used as co-initiators. The optimum ratio of acetone to water for the formation of a narrow distribution of P(St-co-DVB) particles was 49:11 (g/g). The optimum co-initiator compositions for narrow distribution were 9:1 (g/g) for V-65 to KPS, 11:1 for V-65 to APS and 6:1 for V-65 to NaPS. The yield for these compositions was $54{\sim}57%$ and the largest particle size was obtained with the lowest zeta-potential and CV values. From the XPS measurements, the charge density was increased but the zeta potential decreased with increasing sulfur content, implying that the sulfate group provides the electrostatic stabilization on the particle surface. This suggested that the self-crosslinking between styrene and DVB, the electrostatic stabilization of initiators, and the balanced hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties of the solvents are responsible for the formation of stable P(St-co-DVB) spherical particles with narrow size distribution.

Study on Carbon Dioxide Storage through Mineral Carbonation using Sea Water and Paper Sludge Ash (해수와 제지슬러지소각재의 광물탄산화 반응을 이용한 이산화탄소 저장 연구)

  • Mineral carbonation is a technology for permanently storing carbon dioxide by reacting with metal oxides containing calcium and magnesium. In this study, we used sea water and alkaline industrial by-product such as paper sludge ash (PSA) for the storage of carbon dioxide through direct carbonation. We found the optimum conditions of both sea water content (mixing ratio of sea water and PSA) and reaction time required in the direct carbonation through various experiments using sea water and PSA. In addition, we compared the amounts of carbon dioxide storage with the cases when sea water and ultra-pure water were separately used as solvents in the direct carbonation with PSA. The amount of carbon dioxide storage was calculated by using both solid weight increase through the carbonation reaction and the contents of carbonate salts from thermal gravimetric analysis. PSA particle used in this study contained 67.2% of calcium. The optimum sea water content and reaction time in the carbonation reaction using sea water and PSA were 5 mL/g and 2 hours, respectively, under the conditions of 0.05 L/min flow rate of carbon dioxide injected at $25^{\circ}C$ and 1 atm. The amounts of carbon dioxide stored when sea water and ultra-pure water were separately used as solvents in the direct carbonation with PSA were 113 and $101kg\;CO_2/(ton\;PSA)$, respectively. The solid obtained through the carbonation reaction using sea water and PSA was composed of mainly calcium carbonate in the form of calcite and a small amount of magnesium carbonate. The solid obtained by using ultra-pure water, also, was found to be carbonate salt in the form of calcite.

Optimization of Processing Conditions of Chinese Smoke-cured Bacon (Larou) with a New Natural Coating Solution during Storage Period

  • The study aims to determine the optimum sterilization rate and water activity of Chinese traditional smoke-cured bacon product (Larou) in the preservation with natural coating solution. With the response surface methodology (RSM), we analyzed 3 factors of processing conditions (the concentration of lysozyme, concentration of sodium alginate, and concentration of chitosan) and 2 response factors (sterilization rate and water activity). Sterilization rate and water activity of Larou were largely affected by the concentration of lysozyme, concentration of sodium alginate, and concentration of chitosan. The final optimum concentrations of lysozyme, sodium alginate, and chitosan were 0.09, 1.40, and 1.60% and realized the high sterilization rate. Water activity of sliced Larou was significantly correlated with the sterilization rate. Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance analysis verified the optimum processing conditions. The coating resulted in 99.69% rate of reducing bacteria after 30-day storage. The data of the total number of colony, peroxidation value, moisture content, pH, and sensory evaluation provided the theoretical basis for extending the shelf life of Chinese traditional smoke-cured bacon product (Larou) with natural coating solution.

Mechanical Characteristics of Dredged and Reclaimed Ground with Low Plasticity from Western Coastal Site (서해안 저소성 준설매립 지반의 역학적 특성)

  • When carrying out design for soft ground improvement before reclamation of dredged soil, it is very important to appropriately evaluate design parameters such as compression index and undrained strength in order to estimate optimum construction cost. In this study, consolidation and strength parameters were estimated by the samples obtained from the similar reclaimed land. Water content and compression index of dredged soil reclaimed by hydraulic fill method were quite decreased in comparison with those of in-situ conditions at Incheon site. Relationships between compression index(Cc) and water content (wn), and between undrained strength (su) and water content (wn) for dredged soil were obtained by field vane test and oedometer test, respectively. Applicability of Schmertmann correction method (compression index) for low plasticity silty soil was discussed according to comparison with designed and measured settlements.
