  • Ti:LiNbO$_3$ optical waveguides have been fabricated by Ti-diffusion in wet oxygen atmosphere. The fabrication conditions of furnace temperature, diffusion time and bubbler temperature were 105$0^{\circ}C$, 8 hours and 9$0^{\circ}C$, respectively and Ti thickness was varied from 700$\AA$ to 1500$\AA$. In this paper, the nearfield patterns, mode sizes (hirizontal/vertical) and insertion loss of waveguides were discussed at wavelength 1550 nm ad function of Ti thickness. With the planar waveguide, the effective index change and diffusion depth were calculated at 632.8nm using the prism coupling method. From these results, the best Ti thickness in our conditions seems like to by 1200$\AA$~1300$\AA$.

  • A computer routine for personal computer(PC/AT class) is developed to analysize the mode characteristics of silica based optical waveguides whose cross sections are of semi circular and other typical shapes. The basic algorithm used in the routine is to convert the wave equation into a matrix equation by expanding the wave function in terms of simple harmonic functions. The matrix elements are a set of overlap integrals of sinusoidal funtions with appropriate weight given by the distribution of refractive index over the waveguide cross section. The eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the matrix is then computed via diagonalization. We explain some practical problems that arises when implementing the algorithm into the routine. By using this routine we analyze the mode characteristics of silica based optical waveguides of semi circular and some other typical cross sections.

  • Optimum Hamming apodized acousto-optic 2${\times}$2 add/drop multiplexers, using SiO$_2$ film loaded acoustic waveguide with angular offset to the Ti:LiNbO$_3$ waveguide, were fabricated. The four-port device consists of two input waveguides, a polarization beam splitter (PBS), two polarization conversion/acoustooptic tuning waveguide sections, a second PBS and two output waveguides. Insertion loss <7.1 ㏈ has been obtained and side-lobe of -19 ㏈ for -32 ㎽ RF driving power has been realized. Add/drop performance has been confirmed and a linear tuning rate of 8.1 nm/MHz and a 3 ㏈ spectral width of -1.5 nm were demonstrated.

  • An analysis and numerical computations relating to the coupling of optical modes between two neighboring waveguides are discussed. The waveguides are fabricated with Lithium Niobate as guide 1 and Vanadium Oxide as guide 2. In a wave guide system that incorporates two lossless guides, a complete transfer of power from one guide to another can occur when the waveguides are (1) identical or (2) the modes in each guide have identical phase constants. Here we discuss the coupling effects when the guides are dissimilar with respect to both geometry and losses. In thers results, we show that power transfer can occur between the two guides, one lossy and the other lossless, provided the phase matched condition is satisfied. When properly coupled, the power attenuation varies according to the amount of coupling.

  • Circular slab waveguides are conformally mapped into straight waveguides. In the outer cladding region with monotonically increasing index profile, modified Airy functions (MAF) of traveling-wave form are introduced to express the leaky mode. Field distributions and losses calculated by the proposed method are compared with those obtained by the WKB (Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin) method. Detailed numerical examples are presented and compared with the conventional WKB methods, demonstrating our method not only allows a converging field at turning points but also guarantees fine accuracy.

  • $Si_3N_4$ rib-optical waveguides for evanescent-wave integrated-optical biosensors were analytically interpreted, to derive the single-mode propagation conditions. The integrated-optical biosensor structure based on two-mode interference was proposed, and the rib width and thickness and core thickness for a single-mode and two-mode waveguide (sensing region) were proposed to be $3{\mu}m$, 2 nm, and 150 nm and $3{\mu}m$, 20 nm, and 340 nm respectively. The optical characteristics of each guided-wave mode were investigated utilizing the film mode-matching (FMM) analysis.

  • We optimized the Si(substrate)/$SiO_2$(cladding)/$Si_3N_4$(antiresonant cladding)/$SiO_2$(core)/air multi-layers rib-optical waveguides of antiresonant reflecting optical waveguide (ARROW) for integrated optical biosensor structure utilizing beam propagation method (BPM). Thickness of anti-resonant cladding was derived to minimize the propagation loss and leaky field mode deeply related with evanescent mode was theoretically derived. Depth, width, refractive index and cladding thickness of anti-resonant cladding were numerically calculated into 2.3${\mu}m$, 5${\mu}m$, 1.488, and 0.11${\mu}m$ respectively to minimize propagation loss using the BPM simulation tool. Finally one- and two-dimensional propagation characteristics of ARROW was confirmed.

  • We propose a novel metal-waveguide structure for sustaining long-range surface-plasmon-polaritons (LRSPP). The LRSPP waveguides are composed basically of two asymmetric metal layers: a very thin, finite-width metal strip on top of a metal slab with a dielectric gap in between them. Mode cut-off of LRSPPs excited on the double-metal waveguides is characterized by consistently investigating their dispersion relations and mode profiles. We also confirm experimentally the existence of low-loss, well-confined LRSPP modes by measuring far-field outputs emerging from an edge of the asymmetric double-metal waveguides. In the experiment, we have fabricated several types of SPP waveguide devices including straight lines, S-bend, and Y-branch consisting of gold strips (20 nm-thick, $5{\mu}m$-wide). Overall propagation loss of the proposed double-metal waveguides is quite comparable to that of single metal-strip waveguides, in addition the mode sizes can be tuned by increasing the core-insulator gap between the metal layers to get a higher coupling efficiency with a single-mode fiber in telecom wavelength. The proposed LRSPP waveguides may open up realization of SPP-waveguide sensors or nonlinear SPP-devices by replacing the core-insulator with a bio-fluid or a nonlinear medium.
