  • We propose a technique that reconstructs a hologram whose pixel number is greater than the pixel numbers of a conventional image sensor. The pixel numbers of the hologram recorded by optical scanning holography (OSH) increases as the scan area becomes larger. The reconstruction time also increases drastically as the size of the hologram increases. The holographic information of a three-dimensional (3D) scene is distributed throughout the recorded hologram; this makes the simple divide-and-stitch approach fail. We propose a technique that reconstructs the hologram without loss of holographic information. First, we record the hologram of a 3D scene using OSH. Second, we segment the hologram into sub-holograms that contain complete holographic information. Third, we reconstruct the sub-holograms simultaneously. Finally, we rearrange the reconstructions of the sub-holograms.

  • Unlike the conventional waveguide such as optical fiber using total internal reflection, photonic crystal waveguide(PCW), a waveguide made of a line defect in a photonic crystal(PC) structure, does not admit an analytic approach due to its complexity but requires a direct numerical approach. Here, we present numerical results of computer simulation for PCW by using the three-dimensional(3D) Finite-Difference Time -Domain(FDTD) algorithm. (omitted)

  • In this paper, we have proposed a new approach for optical failure analysis which employs a CMOS photon-emitting circuitry, consisting of a flip-flop based on a sense amplifier and a photon-emitting device. This method can be used even with deep-submicron processes where conventional optical failure analyses are difficult to use due to the low sensitivity in the near infrared (NIR) region of the spectrum. The effectiveness of our approach has been proved by the failure analysis of a prototype designed and fabricated in 0.18 ${\mu}m$ CMOS process.

  • This study investigates the design of an optical observation system for continuously tracking unknown space object targets within the telescope's field of view at a short cycle rate of several to tens of frames per second. Through modeling and integrated simulation by design variables, we aim to identify combinations that satisfy the performance effectiveness scale. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of a model-based simulation analysis approach in rapidly identifying design parameters that meet specific performance requirements. By leveraging numerical models tailored to the desired performance analysis level, the approach provides a robust foundation for decision-making, eliminating reliance on empirical methods or vague estimations.

  • In this paper, an approach of modeling the optical interconnection system by SPICE simulation is presented. SPICE simulations with equivalent circuit models for optical devices are performed in a stable manner. From the simulated results, eye diagrams for receiver output and BER are obtained. Timing jitter due to laser diode turn-on delay effects can be found under various bias conditions. Using this approach, various system parameters such as bit rate, BER, dissipated transmitter power, and bias conditions can be optimized. It is expected that this approach will find useful applications such as Gigabit Ethernet and ATM.

  • The present paper proposes a novel dynamic system for hand gesture recognition. The approach involved is comprised of three main steps: detection, tracking and recognition. First, the gesture contour captured by a 2D-camera is detected by combining the three-frame difference method and skin-color elliptic boundary model. Then, the trajectory of the hand gesture is extracted via a gesture-tracking algorithm based on an occlusion-direction oriented linear extrapolation predictor, where the gesture coordinate in next frame is predicted by the judgment of current occlusion direction. Finally, to overcome the interference of insignificant trajectory segments, the longest common subsequence (LCS) is employed with the aid of velocity information. Besides, to tackle the subgesture problem, i.e., some gestures may also be a part of others, the most probable gesture category is identified through comparison of the relative LCS length of each gesture, i.e., the proportion between the LCS length and the total length of each template, rather than the length of LCS for each gesture. The gesture dataset for system performance test contains digits ranged from 0 to 9, and experimental results demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

  • Various buildings are scattered below and around the flight path of UAM (Urban Air Mobility), which flies within a densely populated urban area. And the vertiport used by UAM for takeoff and landing is located on a flat area within the city center or on top of a building. As such, UAM operates in densely populated urban areas, and vertiports for takeoff and landing are installed in densely populated areas, requiring a very high level of safety. In particular, for safe landing of UAM, it is necessary to monitor the approach status of UAM approaching the vertiport from the final approach course and provide approach information. Accordingly, to monitor the UAM vertiport final approach path, research was conducted on technology that utilizes optical equipment that can be installed in a narrow site and has the advantage of reducing the burden of electromagnetic waves.

  • To accurately extract absolute distance information from a self-mixing interferometry (SMI) signal, in this paper we propose an approach based on a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm instead of frequency estimation for absolute distance. The algorithm is utilized to search for the global minimum of the fitness function that is established from the self-mixing signal to find out the actual distance. A resolution superior to $25{\mu}m$ in the range from 3 to 20 cm is obtained by experimental measurement, and the results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach in comparison with interpolated FFT. The influence of different external feedback strength parameters and different inertia weights in the algorithm is discussed as well.

  • DVD(Digital Versatile Disk) is the data storage media devised to make high storage density and high speed data input/output possible. For example, a whole length movie can be stored in a disk as large as a CD(Compact Disk). Therefore higher rotational speed and better accuracy in optical pick-up are required compared with the existing optical storage device. Without these operational functional requirements being satisfied DVD will lose its place as the high capacity storage device. This paper evaluated whether the currently developed DVD satisfies the requirements and provides improved methods with the Axiomatic Approach which is superb in evaluating and designing newly concepted designs.

  • This paper shows a new effective approach to measure crystallization temperature of soft magnetic underlayer (SUL) for next generation of heat assisted perpendicular recording media. This approach uses temperature dependent reflectivity, which shows a clear jump when samples are crystallized. To achieve this measurement, an optical system is set up using hot plate and infrared laser. Reflectivity of SUL $(Co_{70}Fe_{30})_{92}Ta_3Zr_5$ shows a clear jump at its amorphous-crystalline transition temperature. Experiment results show this effect is clear in infrared region, and is weak for visible light.
