Prunus mume has been traditionally used as a medicinal food in Korea, Japan, and China. In particular, this fruit has been reported to have beneficial biological effects on gastritis and gastric ulcers. However, its action in relation to skin whitening has remained unclear. Accordingly, the effects of fruit extract of P. mume related to antioxidation and skin whitening were examined in this study. First, using the MTT assay, it was observed that fruit extract of P. mume below 0.1% has no cytotoxicity in B16-F1 cells as a result of cell viability. Second, the direct scavenging effects and the reducing power of the fruit extract of P. mume were evaluated in vitro on DPPH radicals, hydrogen peroxide, and superoxide. It exhibited high reducing power and scavenging activity on the aforementioned reactive oxygen species. Furthermore, we found that its protective effect against genomic DNA damage related to oxidative stress was increased in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, the fruit extract of P. mume had an inhibitory effect on melanin production induced by L-dopa. In addition, it reduced the expression level of NRF-2, SOD-1, and SOD-2 related to antioxidation in western blot analysis. These results suggest that fruit extract of P. mume could exert a whitening effect through inhibition of melanin production by its antioxidant effect.
Development of garlic processing products by thermal treatment and researched biological activity of a new product, red garlic. Red garlic MeOH extract was graduated by solvents, such as hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, butanol, and water, in order. Each solvent fraction was dried by a rotary evaporator and then resolved in water for analysis of its antioxidant and antiobesity activity. Browning compounds of red garlic fractions were the highest in the chloroform fraction. Total phenolic compounds and flavonoid content were highest in the hexane fraction. The chloroform fraction showed significantly higher activity in DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging activity, and antioxidant activity by FRAP. We propose that the antioxidant activity of the solvent fractions from red garlic was revealed interaction of browning compounds, total phenolic compounds, and flavonoids. Due to the higher activity of the shown fraction, the hexane and the chloroform fractions were have high contents of these compounds. Below $500{\mu}g/ml$, pancreatic lipase inhibition activity was significantly increased by sample concentration. And chloroform fraction, have the highest inhibition activity was shown over the 40%. In 3T3-L1 cells, the lipid accumulation inhibition activity was lower in the hexane and in the chloroform fraction than in the other fractions.

Dandelions were fermented for 120 days at $15-20^{\circ}C$ in batches containing thirty and fifty percent raw sugar (FD30 and FD50). The total phenolic concentration of FD30 and FD50 were about $78.9{\pm}2.17$ and $59.35{\pm}2.56$ mg/g, respectively, both being higher than the 2$54.{\pm}1.49$ mg/g determined for DWE (dandelion water extract). The DPPH radical scavenging activity of FD30 and FD50 showed $IC_{50}$ values of $118.7{\pm}2.03$ and $123.40{\pm}2.15{\mu}g/mL$, respectively, and FD30 displayed the highest antioxidant activity. 2 mg/mL of FD30 and FD50 showed $8.8{\pm}1.72$ and $11.8{\pm}2.87{\mu}M$ production of NO, respectively, compared with $4.9{\pm}1.20{\mu}M$ of the dandelion extract. The protease, ${\alpha}$-amylase, and lipase activity of FD50 was the highest. The fibrinolytic activity of FD30 and FD50 were $0.56{\pm}0.28$ and $1.39{\pm}0.20$ unit/mg protein, respectively, which was substantially higher than the 0.28 unit/mg protein of DWE. In conclusion, the dandelions fermented by sugar showed improved antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and enzymatic activities.

The object of this study was to measure the bioactivity and antioxidant activity of seed from Gardenia jasminoides Ellis fructus (GJE). GJE seeds were performed the extraction of them by chloroform:methanol (CM, 2:1, v/v), 70% ethanol and n-butanol. Sequentially, total phenol content, nitrogen oxide scavenging activity, antioxidant activity and lipid peroxidation inhibition activity of the extracts were investigated. Solvent extract bioactivity of increasing concentrations (0.2, 0.4, 0.6 mg/mL) were significantly increased (p<0.05). GJE seed extracts showed lower activity than positive control (ascorbic acid, BHA, trolox). The highest concentration of CM extracts was obtained in the same manner as the results of analysis of the total phenol contents of the GJE seed, and 70% ethanol extract showed the highest activity of reducing power. The water soluble carotenoids crocin and flavonoid were effective. As a result of this experiment. the seeds of GJE showed excellent antioxidant, and lipid peroxidation inhibitory properties.
Objective: Astragalus membranaceus root is a well-known traditional Chinese herbal medicine with many biological active constituents. This study was conducted to examine the effects of Astragalus membranaceus root powder (AMP) on growth performance, serum antioxidant and immune response in finishing lambs. Methods: A total of thirty-six Guangling fat-tailed ram lambs (body weight = 19±2 kg, mean±standard deviation) were randomly assigned to one of six treatments for a 40 d feeding period, with the first 10 d for adaptation. Treatments consisted of the lambs' basal diets with addition of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 g/kg of diet of AMP. Results: Response to supplementation level of AMP was quadratic (p≤0.032) for final weight and ADG with the greatest at 10 g/kg of diet, but dry matter intake was not affected (p≥0.227) by treatments. The increase of AMP supplementation resulted in a quadratic response in contents of triglyceride and creatinine (p<0.05), with the lowest values for 10 and 20 g/kg of diet, respectively. A linear and quadratic decrease was observed in activity of alkaline phosphatase in serum of lambs. As the AMP supplementation increased, the activities of total superoxide dismutase and total antioxidant capacity increased linearly (p≤0.018) and hydroxyl radical (OH-) decreased linearly (p = 0.002). For catalase (CAT) and malondialdehyde (MDA), quadratic (p≤0.001) effects were observed among treatments, with the greatest CAT and lowest MDA values at 10 g/kg AMP. Additionally, supplementing AMP up to a level of 10 or 15 g/kg of diet quadratically increased immunoglobulin and interleukin contents in the serum. Conclusion: The results indicated that AMP can be used as natural feed additive in the ration of lambs to improve ADG, antioxidant status, and immune functions, and the optimal dose was 10 g/kg of diet under the condition of this experiment.
2,4-Dichlorophenol was known pollutants caused by the endocrine disruptor into the refractory substances of environment and this is difficult to be degradable by conventional methods. Therefore, a considerable interest has been devoted to developing new process where 2,4-Dichlorophenol can easily decomposed. In this study, the series of ultrasonic irradiation for removal of 2,4-Dichlorophenol has been selected as a model reaction in the batch reactor system in order to obtain the basic data investigate the influence of various experimental parameters such as concentration, pH, reaction temperature, acoustic intensity. The products obtained form the ultrasonic irradiation were analysed by GC/MS and HPLC. The formation of $H_2O_2$, a well-known the strong oxidant was found proportionally to increase with irradiation time. The intermediates of ultrasonic irradiation of 2,4-Dichlorophenol were identified as HCl, catechol, hydroquinone, o,p-benzoquinone, muconic acid, and maleic acid. The final products of this was $CO_2$ and $H_2O$. As the decomposition of 2,4-Dichlorophenol proceeds by the ultrasonic irradiation, the pH of 2,4-Dichlorophenol containing aqueous solution increases slowly, The decomposition of 2,4-Dichlorophenol was found to be occured fast in the basic medium. In general, the rate of reaction is proportional to the reaction temperature obeying the Arrhenius' law. However, in the ultrasonic irradiation, this suggests as the reaction temperature increase the decomposition rate of the reactant decreases. This result meant that the increase of reaction temperature due to the increase of vapor pressure of water accelerated the decrease of acoustic intensity which was can be proportional to the decomposition rae of these compounds. It was found that more than 80% of phenol solution was removed within hours in all reaction conditions. The reaction order in the degradation of the 2,4-Dichlorophenol compounds was verified as the Pseude-first order. From the fore-mentioned results, it can be concluded that the refractory organic compounds caused by endocrine disruptor as 2,4-dichlorophenol could be removed by the ultrasonic irradiation with radicals, such as $H{\;}{\cdot}{\;}and{\;}OH{\;}{\cdot}$ radical causing the high increase of pressure and temperature. Finally, it apeared that the technology using ultrasonic irradiation can be applied to the treatment of refractory substances caused by endocrine disruptor which are difficult to be decomposed by the conventional methods.

This study was performed to observe the components, antioxidative, antimutagenic and cytotoxic effects of the mineral water using AOAC method, DPPH free radical donating method, Ames test and SRB assay. Mineral water contained eleven kinds of minerals among the total seventeen components and sodium and potassium ion were main components. Mineral water showed electron donating activities ($175.9{\mu}g$). The inhibition rate of mineral water ($200{\mu}g/plate$) in the Sallmonella typhimurium TA98 strain showed $54\%$ against the mutagenesis induced by Trp-P-1. In addition, same concentration of mineral water the Sallmonella typhimurium TA100 strain showed highest $67\%,\;65.8\%\;and\;63\%$ inhibition against $B({\alpha})P$, 4NQO and Trp-P-1, respectively. The cytotoxic effects of mineral water against the cell lines with Human lung carcinoma (A549), Human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7), Human stomach adenocarcinoma (AGS) and Human cervical adenocarcinoma (Hela) were inhibited with the increase of the mineral water. The treatment of $50{\mu}g/well$ of mineral water showed cytotoxicities of $66\%,\;47.6\%,\;37.7\%\;and\;45.6\%$ against A549, MCF-7, AGS and Hela.
Background: This study was performed to evaluate their 5-year survival rates and identify the factors affecting the prognosis of oral cancer patients who had undergone surgical treatment only. Methods: Among 130 patients who were diagnosed with malignant tumor of oral, maxillofacial, and surgical treated in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Chonnam National University Hospital within a period from January 2000 to December 2010, for 11 years, 84 patients were investigated who were followed up for more than 5 years after radical surgery; oral cancer is primary and received only surgical treatment. The survival rate according to gender, age, type and site of cancer, TNM stage, cervical lymph node metastasis and its stage, recurrence or metastasis, time of recurrence and metastasis, and differentiation were investigated and analyzed. Results: Overall, 5-year survival rate in patients who received only surgical treatment was 81.2 %, and disease-specific 5-year survival rate was 83.1 %. The disease-specific 5-year survival rate based on TNM stage, metastasis of cervical lymph node, N stage, and presence of recurrence/metastasis was a significant difference (p < 0.05). The disease-specific 5-year survival rate based on sex, age, type of tumor, primary site, and differentiation was not a significant difference (p > 0.05). Conclusions: These results suggest that good survival rate can be obtained with surgical treatment only, and stage of oral cancer, cervical lymph node metastasis and stage, recurrence or metastasis, time of recurrence, and metastasis have a significant effect on survival rate in oral cancer patients.

Introduction: This study examined the effect of a conservative neck dissection in patients with head and neck cancer. Materials and Methods: A total of 24 patients, who underwent a conservative neck dissection for the treatment of oral cancer from January 2002 to December 2007, were included. All procedures were performed by one oral and maxillofacial surgeon. The mean age was 58.2 years (range, 19 to 79 years). The medical recordings, pathologic findings, and radiographic findings were evaluated. The mean follow up period was 41.1 months (range, 4 to 88 months). Results: 1. Oral cancer was more common in men than women with a 3:1 ratio. 2. Histopathologically, squamous cell carcinoma(83%) was the most prevalent oral cancer in this study. 3. The most common primary site was the tongue(6 cases, 25%) followed by the mouth floor (5 cases, 21%), buccal mucosa (3 cases, 13%), lower lip, mandible, palate (2 cases, respectively) and salivary gland, retromolar area, oropharynx, alveolus (1 case, each). 4. Three out of the 24 (13%) subjects had a recurrence at the primary sites. 5. Two out of 24 (8%) subjects had a distant metastasis. 6. All 24 patients survived and there were eleven patients who passed 5 years postoperatively. Conclusion: A conservative neck dissection is a reliable and effective method for controlling neck node metastases in patients with oral cancer of the N0 or N1 neck node without serious complications.

The objective of this study was to investigate the antioxidant and antiobesity activities of various color resources extracted from natural plants such as, clove, persimmon, gall nut, amur cork, gardenia, safflower, and annatto. Total phenolic content was the highest in gall nut extract (2,441.45 mg/kg) followed by clove extract (1,346.48 mg/kg). DPPH, and ABTS radical scavenging activities and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) were also higher in gall nut extract. ${\alpha}$-Glucosidase inhibitory activity ($IC_{50}$) was highest in persimmon extract ($22.83{\mu}g/mL$) followed by gall nut extract. ${\alpha}$-Amylase and lipase inhibitory activities were also higher in persimmon extract (49.45% and 61.01%, respectively). Lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells was lower in persimmon, clove, and annatto extracts (81.54%, 83.36%, and 85.70% at $20{\mu}g/mL$, respectively). Triglyceride content in 3T3-L1 cells was lowest in clove extract (66.11%) followed by persimmon extract (88.88%). The results of this study suggest that gall nut extract has the highest antioxidant activity, whereas persimmon and clove extract show the antiobesity activities by inhibition of digestive enzymes and fat accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells. These extracts are useful materials for the development of antioxidant and antiobesity functional foods.
