  • The acoustical sources of intake and exhaust systems in fluid machines are often characterized by the source impedance and strength using linear frequency-domain modeling. In the case of the sources which are nonlinear and time-variant, however, the source parameters were sometimes incorrectly obtained. In this paper, the source model and direct measurement technique are modified in order to evaluate the effect due to nonlinear and periodically time-varying source character as well as the linear property of the reflectivity of in-duct fluid machine source. With a priori known kinematical information of the source, the types of nonlinear time-variant terms can be presumed by a simple physical model, in which there is practically no restriction on the form of the model. The concept of source impedance can be extendable by introducing the linear frequency response function for each nonlinear or time-variant input. Extending the conventional method and adapting the reverse MISO technique, it is possible to develop a direct method that can deal with the nonlinear time-variant source parameters. The proposed direct method has a novel feature that there is no restriction on the probability or spectral natures of the excited sound pressure data. The present method is verified by the simulated measurements for simplified fluid machines. It is thought that the proposed method would be useful in predicting the insertion loss or the radiated sound level from intake or exhaust systems.

  • In this study, derivation is made of a one-grid source function for the extended Boussinesq equations of Nwogu (1993) in order to generate nonlinear waves internally. The energy velocity approach used in the line source method is verified analytically by the fractional step splitting method. The source function method is verified by generating accurately nonlinear waves as well as linear waves for horizontally one-dimensional cases. It is found that numerical solutions by the source function method are the same as those by the line source method.

  • We investigate the existence of solutions of the nonlinear heat equation under Dirichlet boundary conditions on $\Omega$ and periodic condition on the variable t, $Lu-D_tu$+g(u)=f(x, t). We also investigate a relation between multiplicity of solutions and the source terms of the equation.

  • The initial-boundary value problem for a class of nonlinear higher-order wave equations system with a damping and source terms in bounded domain is studied. We prove the existence of global solutions. Meanwhile, under the condition of the positive initial energy, it is showed that the solutions blow up in the finite time and the lifespan estimate of solutions is also given.

  • This paper is concerned the finite time blow-up of solution for higher-order nonlinear Kirchhoff-type equation with a degenerate term and a source term. By an appropriate Lyapunov inequality, we prove the finite time blow-up of solution for equation (1.1) as a suitable conditions and the initial data satisfying ||Dmu0|| > B-(p+2)/(p-2q), E(0) < E1.

  • Source separation is a statistical method, the goal of which is to separate the linear instantaneous mixtures of statistically independent sources without resorting to any prior knowledge. This paper addresses a source separation algorithm which is able to separate the mixtures of sub- and super-Gaussian sources. The nonlinear function in the proposed algorithm is derived from the generalized Gaussian distribution that is a set of distributions parameterized by a real positive number (Gaussian exponent). Based on the relationship between the kurtosis and the Gaussian exponent, we present a simple and efficient way of selecting proper nonlinear functions for source separation. Useful behavior of the proposed method is demonstrated by computer simulations.

  • Various methods for blind source separation (BSS) are based on independent component analysis (ICA) which can be viewed as a nonlinear extension of principal component analysis (PCA). Most existing ICA methods require certain nonlinear functions (which leads to higher-order statistics) depending on the probability distributions of sources, whereas PCA is a linear learning method based on second-order statistics. In this paper we show that the PCA can be applied to the task of BBS, provided that source are spatially uncorrelated but temporally correlated. Since the resulting method is based on only second-order statistics, it avoids the nonlinear function and is able to separate mixtures of several colored Gaussian sources, in contrast to the conventional ICA methods.
