  • Networked $SnO_2$ nanowires were uniformly functionalized with Pd nanoparticles via ${\gamma}$-ray radiolysis. The Networked $SnO_2$ nanowires were fabricated through a selective growth method. The sensing properties of the Pd-functionalized $SnO_2$ nanowires were analyzed in terms of their response to $NO_2$ and CO gases. The response time and sensitivity of the sensors were significantly improved for $NO_2$ at lower temperatures by the Pd functionalization. The enhancement in the sensing properties is likely to be due to the spillover effect of the Pd nanoparticles.

  • ${\gamma}$-ray radiolysis was used to functionalize networked ZnO nanowires with Au nanoparticles. The networked ZnO nanowires were prepared through a vapor phase selective growth method. The sensing performances of the Au-functionalized ZnO nanowires were investigated in terms of $NO_2$, CO and benzene gases. The Au-funtionalized ZnO nanowire sensors showed an applicable, reliable capability to detect the gases, indicating their potential in chemical gas sensors.

  • We design a NCS (Networked Control System) where the communication between sensors and controllers takes place over a USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Network). In order to measure time delays between sensors and controllers in real time, we design an algorithm to measure RTT (Round Trip Time) between USN nodes, and implement it into TinyOS of USN. By using the measured time delays, we construct the Smith predictor to compensate the time delays between sensors and controllers in real-time. For the real time experiment, we simulate the dynamic plant model, controller, and USN interface using Real-Time Windows Target provided in MATLAB. The USN interface in the Simulink model consists of serial ports, which connect the plant output and controller with USN nodes. The experiment results show that the time delays between sensors and controllers are precisely measured in real time; the Smith predictor appropriately compensates the time delays; and the stability is achieved in the closed-loop of the NCS.

  • Networked Control System (NCS) has evolved in the past decade through the advances in communication technology. The problems involved in NCS are broadly classified into two categories namely network issues due to network and control performance due to system network. The network problems are related to bandwidth allocation, scheduling and network security, and the control problems deal with stability analysis and delay compensation. Various delays with variable length occur due to sharing a common network medium. Though most delays are very less and mostly neglected, the network induced delay is significant. It occurs when sensors, actuators, and controllers exchange data packet across the communication network. Networked induced delay arises from sensor to controller and controller to actuator. This paper presents an adaptive delay compensation process for efficient control. Though Smith predictor has been commonly used as dead time compensators, it is not adaptive to match with the stochastic behavior of network characteristics. Time delay adaptive compensation gives an effective control to solve dead time, and creates a virtual environment using the plant model and computed delay which is used to compensate the effect of delay. This approach is simulated using TrueTime simulator that is a Matlab Simulink based simulator facilitates co-simulation of controller task execution in real-time kernels, network transmissions and continuous plant dynamics for NCS. The simulation result is analyzed, and it is confirmed that this control provides good performance.

  • Recently, it has been increasing attention on health care that can provide remote medical service to an aging population, people with disabilities and people having a medical checkup periodically due to increasing people's average life span. Home health care system should provide reasonable cost, on-line basic health status monitoring, embedded basic medical helper function and intuitive interface. In this paper, we developed a prototype of 3G networked pulse measurement system that can detect pulse signal information from subject's fingertip using the optical sensor. The prototype had been analyzed in terms of abnormalities, feeling, timing and pulse counting accuracy. Finally we evaluated its suitability.

  • For factory automation using force/torque control, we need a networked-force management system as well as good force sensing and force generation. In this paper, we present a web-based force management system including 6-axis force/torque sensing system. Performance of the force-torque sensor is affected significantly by analog noise that is included in a sensor signal, and the noise should be reduced appropriately to obtain an adequate performance of the sensor. Moreover, the sensor itself should be convenient to install to a real application system. It should be compact in size and also easy to wire in real situation. In this viewpoint, we developed usb-based compact sensor system which is well communicated using web between two computers that exist far away. Software is programmed using LabVIEW and CCS-C. PIC microcontrollers are used for implementing a compact hardware. The proposed system is verified through experimental works.

  • We consider the stabilization problem for a class of networked control systems with neutral type of time delays. The neutral type of time-delays occur in controller-to-actuator and sensor-to-controller. The Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model is employed to represent a nonlinear system with neutral type of time-delays. The stabilization via state-feedback is first addressed, and delay-range-dependent stabilization conditions are proposed in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, an application example will be given to show the merits and design a procedure of the proposed approach.

  • In this paper, we introduce a canonical framework of the large-scaled web-based sensor gateway and practically implement it as the environment monitoring system. The system consists of a central management server, up to 250 local embedded subsystems and up to 250 sensor or actuator nodes for each subsystem. The node information is gathered periodically through a well-defined protocol on the sensor network and converted to the web contents and the SNMP MIB objects according to its data type. The MIB objects are well-defined and include system, network, sensor, actuator and alarm specific data classes. Because there is an increasing trend that a large number of sites are willing to adapt unmanned sensing and control, the developed system will play a key role to efficiently manage a large scale sensor networked system such as environment monitoring systems or countermeasure systems against disaster and calamities.

  • We consider the stabilization problem for a class of networked control systems with random delays in the discrete-time domain. The controller-to-actuator and sensor-to-controller time-delays are modeled as two Markov chains, and the resulting closed-loop systems are Markovian jump nonlinear systems with two modes. The T-S (Takagi-Sugeno) fuzzy model is employed to represent a nonlinear system with Markovian jump parameters. The aim is to design a fuzzy controller such that the closed-loop Markovian jump fuzzy system is stochastically stable. The necessary and sufficient conditions on the existence of stabilizing fuzzy controllers are established in terms of LMIs (Linear Matrix Inequalities). It is shown that fuzzy controller gains are mode-dependent. Finally, a simulation example is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method.

  • A method is proposed for scheduling sensor accesses to the shared network in a networked control system. The proposed method determines the access order in which the sensors are granted medium access through minimization of the state estimation error covariance. Solving the problem by evaluating the error covariance for each possible ordered set of sensors is not practical for large systems. Therefore, a convex optimization problem is proposed, which yields approximate yet acceptable results. A state estimator is designed for the augmented system resulting from the incorporation of the optimally chosen communication sequence in the plant dynamics. A car suspension system simulation is conducted to test the proposed method. The results show promising improvement in the state estimation performance by reducing the estimation error norm compared to round-robin scheduling.
