  • In this research we tried to make nano-sized TiNx by using planetary milling, and we made the composites double layered of titanium and nano-sized TiNx by using spark plasma sintering apparatus after mixing with the different ratio of pure titanium powder, and they were heat treated at $850^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. The crystal structures of nano-sized TiNx powders and the composites were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The microstructures of the powders were analyzed by using scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and the 40-50 nm size of nano-sized TiNx particle on the surface of agglomerated particles was investigated. With increasing the ratio of nano-sized TiNx of the composites, the microvickers hardness of the composites was increased.

  • In this study, the physicochemical and electrochemical properties of carbon nanomaterials and synthesized nano-carbon/Si composites were studied. The nano-carbon/Si composites were ball-milled to a nano size and coated with pyrolytic carbon using Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). They were then finely mixed with respective nano-carbon materials. The physicochemical properties of samples were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and surface area analyzer. The electrochemical characteristics were investigated using the galvanostatic charge-discharge and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements. Three-electrode cells were fabricated using the carbon nanomaterials and nano-carbon/Si composites as anode materials and LiPF6 and LiClO4 as electrolytes of Li secondary batteries. Reversibility using LiClO4 as an electrolyte was superior to that of LiPF6 as the electrolyte. The initial discharge capacities of nano-carbon/Si composites were increased compared to the initial discharge capacities of nano-carbon materials.

  • Partial discharge (PD) resistances were investigated for three types of samples: original epoxy resins, epoxy micro composites with and without the silane processing, and mixture composites with micro and nano particles. The PD was applied to these materials using rod, gap, and plane electrodes. The partial discharge resistance found in the micro composites was better than that found in the original epoxy resin. Moreover, the mixture composites of $SiO_2$ nano and micro particles had much larger resistances than the original epoxy resin or microcomposites. It can be regarded that this excellent property was due to the fact that the nano particles have a dense structure between the micro particles.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are widely used in polymer composites as filler materials to enhance various characteristics of the composites because of their remarkable mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. In this study, we investigate the effects of MWCNTs on the electrical and wear characteristics of high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) composites, and compare the results with the effects of carbon black (CB). The HIPS composites are classified as Bare-HIPS, MWCNT-HIPS composites containing 2, 3, 4, and 5 wt% MWCNTs, and CB-HIPS containing 17 wt% CB. Electrical characteristics are evaluated by measuring the surface resistance using a 4-point probe. Wear characteristics are evaluated using the reciprocating wear test, and a chrome steel ball with a curvature of 6.3 mm is used as the counterpart. The results show that the addition of MWCNTs or CB can improve the electrical and wear characteristics of HIPS composites. In the case of MWCNT-HIPS composites, surface resistance, friction coefficient, and specific wear rate decrease as the concentrations of MWCNTs increase. Moreover, the addition of MWCNTs is more effective in improving the electrical and wear characteristics of HIPS composites compared to the addition of CB. To fabricate the HIPS composite with appropriate electrical and wear characteristics, more than 4 wt% MWCNTs is added to HIPS.

  • In order to obtain 'value added products' from polypropylene (PP)/waste ground rubber tire powder (WGRT) composites, PP/WGRT microcellular foams were prepared via supercritical carbon dioxide. The effects of blend composition and processing condition on the cell size, cell density and relative density of PP/WGRT micro-cellular composites were studied. The results indicated that the microcellular structure was dependent on blend composition and processing condition. An increased content of waste ground rubber tire powder (WGRT) and maleic anhydride-grafted styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS-g-MA) reduced the cell size, and raised the cell density and relative density, whereas a higher saturation pressure increased the cell size, and reduced the cell density and relative density. With increasing saturation temperature, the cell size increased and the relative density decreased, whereas the cell density initially increased and then decreased.

  • Bulk metallic glass (BMG) composites combining a $Cu_{54}Ni_6Zr_{22}Ti_{18}$ matrix with brass powders or $Zr_{62}A_{l8}Ni_{13}Cu_{17}$ metallic glass powders were fabricated by spark plasma sintering. The brass powders and Zr-based metallic glass powders added for the enhancement of plasticity are well distributed homogeneously in the Cu-based metallic glass matrix after consolidation. The BMG composites show macroscopic plasticity after yielding, and the plastic strain increased to around 2% without a decrease in strength for the composite material containing 20 vol% Zr-based amorphous powders. The proper combination of strength and plasticity in the BMG composites was obtained by introducing a second phase in the metallic glass matrix.

  • The mechanical properties of nano composites were evaluated for structural performance in order to enhance their applicability to the car and machine industrial fields. Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) and GFRP were manufactured by vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) process with good mechanical properties. Tensile test was conducted to obtain the process factor of each composite. Also, carbon nano fiber (CNF) was dispersed in the composites and the relationship between the mechanical property and the CNF fraction was compared. The tensile strength and stiffness of 0/90 laminated CFRP were the best. CFRP/CNF (0.5 wt.%) was confirmed to be an excellent material for its elasticity and tensile strength.

  • The research on electromagnetic shielding has been advanced for military applications as well as for commercial products. Utilizing the reflective properties and absorptive properties of shielding material, the replied signal measured at the rear surface or at the signal source can be minimized. The shielding effect was obtained from materials having special absorptive properties and structural characteristics such as stacking sequence. Recently researchers studied the electromagnetic properties of nano size particles. In this research {glass fiber}/{epoxy}/{nano particle} composites(GFR-Nano composites) was fabricated using various nano particles, and their properties in electromagnetic shielding were compared. For the visual observation of the nano composite materials, SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) and TEM(Transmission Electron Microscope) were used. For the measurement of electromagnetic shielding, HP8719ES S-parameter Vector Network Analyser System was used on the frequency range of 8 GHz${\~}$12GHz. Among the nano particles, carbon black and Multi-Walled Carbon Nano-Tube (MWCNT) revealed outstanding electromagnetic shielding. Although silver nano particles (flake and powder) were expected to have effective electromagnetic shielding due to their excellent electric conductivities, test results showed little shielding characteristics.

  • In order to develop new insulating materials for GIS Spacer using environmentally friendly insulating gas, three kinds of dispersed liquid nano composites of solid epoxy /nano layered silicate filled material were prepared. And the epoxy/nano/micro silica composite was prepared by mixing epoxy/nano 3 phr dispersion/4 kinds of filler contents(40,50,60, 70wt%). The electrical insulation breakdown strengths of the nano and nano/micro mixed composites were evaluated by using 8 kinds of samples including the original epoxy. The mechanical tensile strength of the epoxy / nano / micro silica composite were evaluated, also. The TEM was measured to evaluate the internal structure of nano/micro composites. As a result, it was confirmed that the layered silicate nano particles was exfoliated through the process of inserting epoxy resin between silicate layers and the layers. In addition, dispersion of nano / micro silica resulted in improvement of electrical insulation breakdown strength with increase of filling amount of dense tissue with nanoparticles inserted between microparticles. In addition, the tensile strength showed a similar tendency, and as the content of microsilica filler increased, the mechanical improvement was further increased.
