  • Acute toxicity of EPO(Erythropoietin) was investigated using rats and beagle dogs according to Established Regulation of Korean National Institute of Safety Research (1994. 4. 14). Rats and beagle dogs were injected intravenously with dosages of 20000 IU/kg, 2000 IU/kg, 200 IU/kg, 20 IU/kg and 2 IU/kg. In animals injected with EPO, there were neither dead animals nor significant changes of body weights. In addition, no differences were found between control and treated groups in clinical signs and autopsy findings. Therefore $LD_50$ of EPO was considered to be higher than 20000 IU/ kg B. W. in rats and beagle dogs.

  • New problems have been recently posed on the abnormal foaming (Scum) in an aeration tank and the sludge flotation in a final sedimentation tank during the activated sludge process. However, the activities of the causing bacteria, Nocardia-amarae in an aeration tank have not been searched out at all. Therefore, in this article the activities of Nocardia-amarae in an aeration tank have been closely examined by means of the changes of (F/M) ratio, SRT and inflowing substrate using continuous type and fed-batch type. Summarized results of experiments are as follows. 1. Regrading continuous culture when synthetic wastewater was used substrate neither the increase in the number of Nocardia-amarae in the aeration tank nor the Occurrence of Scum was observed. 2. In the case of fed-batch culture, Nocardia-amarae in the aeration tank increased due to the partial change in substrate and the effect of SRT was significant. 3. Once the scum was formed and the quantity of added Nocardia-amarae and substrate were not changed, the effect of STR was not significant.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method of removing glasses from human frontal facial images. We first detect the regions occluded by the glasses, and generate a natural looking facial image without glasses by recursive error compensation using PCA reconstruction. The resulting image has no trace of the glasses frame, nor of the reflection and shade caused by the glasses. The experimental results show that the proposed method provides an effective solution to the problem of glasses occlusion, and we believe that this method can also be used to enhance the performance of face recognition systems.

  • Along with the increased use of e-journal since mid of 1990's, there has been a sharp increase of license contracting in the library. However the librarians who have no enough knowledge nor technology to handle the licensing are experiencing difficulties in the process. The study intended to help them understand the practical problems of license contracting between library and vendors, and proposed guidelines for developing model license for e-journal based on the licensing principles of IFLA and ALA.

  • In order to find out the effects of GABA on the rabbit's intestinal motility, the following experiments were carried out using Magnus method and the results obtained were as follows: 1. GABA inhibited the intestinal motility of rabbits initially. 2. GABA potentiated the inhibitory action of adrenaline and nor-adrenaline. 3. GABA inhibited the accelerating activity of acetylcholine on the intestinal motility by its anti acetylcholine effect. 4. The inhibitory action of GABA was unaffected with atropinization, strychnin, picrotoxin treatment, but the accelerating activity of GABA observed in some cases was only in the picrotoxin treatment.

  • To regain competitive advantages in the global textile industry the Korean textile firms need to strategically collaborate each other on developing partnership relations. This study, as a first step for developing a futuristic partnership between textile firms, examined the characteristics of current partnership relations among textile firms in Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions. Data were obtained from 163 textile firms in the region by a questionnaire survey. More than a half of the textile firms had a partnership experience in product manufacturing and wanted to have one in product development. Partnerships with firms in the same sub-industry showed the highest frequency even though various pairs were observed. Length of partnership was related with the history and size of the firm but not with partnership performance. Partnership itself affected neither the firm's perception of its competitive power nor the perceived intensity of industry competition.

  • We study the problem of optimal opportunistic spectrum access with unknown and heterogeneous channel dynamics in cognitive radio networks. There is neither statistic information about the licensed channels nor information exchange among secondary users in the respective systems. We formulate the problem of maximizing network throughput. To achieve the desired optimization, we propose a win-shift lose-stay algorithm based only on rewards. The key point of the algorithm is to make secondary users tend to shift to another channel after receiving rewards from the current channel. The optimality and the convergence of the proposed algorithm are proved. The simulation results show that for both heterogeneous and homogenous systems the proposed win-shift lose-stay algorithm has better performance in terms of throughput and fairness than an existing algorithm.

  • With the unparalleled rate of aging and rapid modernization, Korean society faces the situation in which it has to increase the supply of elderly care services dramatically in the near future. Among these services, nursing homes are considered as an essential alternative provision because Korea can no longer rely on traditional familism nor medical facilities for the care of her older population. It is necessary, therefore, to prepare a future plan for the delivery of nursing homes in Korea. This paper has identified elderly care context and analyzed elderly care facilities of Korea in the point of supply and utilization rate of nursing homes according to the region and type of facilities. On the bases of this analysis, the delivery planning of nursing homes in Korea has been proposed in order to increase welfare status of older people and efficient utilization of health care resources.

  • This study was carried out to suggest the best statistical test to analyze the trend in monthly water quality data. Traditional parametric tests such as t-test and regression analysis are based on the assumption that the underlying population has a normal distribution and regression analysis additionally assumes that residual errors are independent. Analyzing 9-years monthly COD data collected at Paldang in Han River, the underlying population was found to be neither normal nor independent. Therefore parametric tests are invalid for trend detection. Four Kinds of nonparametric statistical tests, such as Run Test, Daniel test, Mann-Kendall test, and Time Series Residual Analysis were applied to analyze the trend in the COD data, Daniel test and Mann-Kendall test indicated upward trend in COD data. The best nonparametric test was suggested to be Daniel test, which is simple in computation and easy to understand the intuitive meaning.

  • Cultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were treated with pulsed electric fields to improve accumulation of zinc in the biomass. Under optimized conditions, that is, on 15 min exposure of the 20 h grown culture to PEFs of 1500 V and 10 ${\mu}s$ pulse width, accumulation of zinc in the yeast biomass reached a maximum of 15.57 mg/g d.m. Under optimum zinc concentration (100 ${\mu}g$/ml nutrient medium), its accumulation in the cells was higher by 63% in comparison with the control (without PEFs). That accumulation significantly correlated against zinc concentration in the medium. Neither multiple exposure of the cultures to PEFs nor intermittent supplementation of the cultures with zinc increased the zinc accumulation. The intermittent supplementation of the cultures with zinc and multiple exposures on PEFs could even reduce the accumulation efficiency, respectively, by 57% and 47%.
