  • In this study, we investigated NO oxidation characteristic that depends on available chlorine concentration and temperature of seawater which is treated by un-divided electrolysis. Reactant gas passed through bubbling reactors which is filled with electrolyzed water and then NO concentration change was analyzed. In the closed-loop electrolysis system, concentration of available chlorine increased with electrolysis time. The higher oxidation rate of NO to $NO_2$ was obtained with the higher concentration of available chlorine. Oxidation of NO was fast when temperature of electrolyzed water was high, in the case of same concentration of available chlorine.

  • Computer methods with simplified mathematical models in conjunction with empirical model parameters can be efficiently practiced into an optimization of a diesel aftertreatment system. Components of prime interests are diesel particulate filter, diesel oxidation catalyst and de-$NO_x$ catalytic converter. de-$NO_x$, de-PM, and de-HC processes in each part are individually modeled, formulated and then combined into an integrated analysis procedure for a unified simulation of the diesel emission aftertreatment. The model is empirically tuned and validated with comprehensive engine and laboratory data. The effects of emission species and space velocity on the $NO_x$ and soot reductions are parametrically investigated. A lowered $NO_2/NO_x$ ratio due to PM oxidation in DPF contributes to promote the $NO_x$ reduction by SCR at intermediate gas temperatures. $NO_x$ reduction is inert to the PM oxidation at high temperatures. Rate of PM trapping strongly depends on temperature and $NO_x$ concentration.

  • Experimental investigation to estimate the feasibility of fast selective catalytic reduction (SCR) or oxidation catalyst combined ammonia SCR system to abate NOx in low temperature condition ($150{\sim}250^{\circ}C$) is reported. Because the conversion of NO to $NO_2$ is pre-requisite of the fast SCR process, the effect of the amount of oxidation catalyst to NO conversion to $NO_2$ was tested. 37, 45 and 51% of conversion rates were obtained for the OCV of 563000, 375000 and 281000 h, respectively. $De-NO_x$ performance in the case of $NO_2/NO_x$ ratio of 45% showed the best result in all tested temperature conditions. Comparison of the fast SCR and standard SCR with the condition of $NO_2/NO_x$ ratio of 45%, $200{\sim}250^{\circ}C$ and space velocity of 10000~30000 h showed that the fast SCR does not show much difference according to the variance of space velocity. Also it was shown that using the fast SCR, the volume of SCR catalyst can be reduced less than half of the standard SCR condition by increasing space velocity without the loss of $De-NO_x$ performance.

  • Major anthropogenic emissions of elemental mercury (Hg0) occur from coal-fired power plants, and the emissions can be controlled successfully using NH3-SCR (selective catalytic reduction) systems with catalysts. Although the catalysts can easily convert the gaseous mercury into Hg2+ species, the reactions are greatly dependent on the flue gas constituents and SCR conditions. Numerous deNOxing catalysts have been proposed for considerable reduction in power plant mercury emissions; however, there are few studies to date of elemental mercury oxidation using SCR processes with MW- and full-scale coal-fired boilers. In these flue gas streams, the chemistry of the mercury oxidation is very complicated. Coal types, deNOxing catalytic systems, and operating conditions are critical in determining the extent of the oxidation. Of these parameters, halogen element levels in coals may become a key vehicle for obtaining better Hg0 oxidation efficiency. Such halogens are Cl, Br, and F and the former one is predominant in coals. The chlorine exists in the form of salts and is transformed to gaseous HCl with a trace amount of Cl2 during the course of coal combustion. The HCl acts as a very powerful promoter for high catalytic Hg0 oxidation; however, this can be strongly dependent on the type of coal because of a wide variation in the chlorine contents of coal.

  • This study was performed by the numerical approach to investigate chemical behaviors of homogeneous syngas ($CO/H_2$) with nitric monoxide (NO) in pressurized oxy-fuel conditions. Hydrogen had a dominant effect to the ignition delay time of syngas due to the fast chemistry of its oxidation. Combustion was promoted by NO at the low temperature region. It was by the additional heat release through NO oxidation and production and consumption of major radicals related to the ignition. Two stage ignition behavior was shown in the pressurized condition by the accumulation of $H_2O_2$ produced from $HO_2$ radical. Additional NO oxidation was induced by the pressurized oxy-fuel condition to produce $NO_2$.

  • We studied the MOSFET characteristics and the hot-carrier reliability with the sidewall spacer composition and the post gate oxidation thickness in 0.20${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ gate length transistor. The MOSFET with NO(Nitride+Oxide) sidewall spacer exhibits the large degradation of hot-carrier lifetime because there is no buffering oxide against nitride stress. When the post gate oxidation is skipped, the hot-carrier lifetime is improved, but GIDL (Gate Induced Drain Leakage) current is also increased.

  • Mycobacterium sp. strain JCl DSM 3803 grown in methanol showed no methanol dehydrogenase or oxidase activities found in mast methylotrophic bacteria and yeasts, respectively. Even though the methanol-grown cells exhibited a little methanol-dependent oxidation by cytochrome c-dependent methanol dehydrogenase and alcohol dehydrogenase, they were not the key enzymes responsible for the methanol oxidation of the cells, in that the cells contained no c-type cytochrome and the methanol oxidizing activity from the partially purified alcohol dehydrogenase was too low, respectively. In substrate switching experiments, we found that only a catalase-peroxidase among the three types of catalase found in glucose-grown cells was highly expressed, in the methanol-grown cells and that its activity was relatively high during the exponential growth phase in Mycobacterium sp. JCl. Therefore, we propose that catalase-peroxidase is an essential enzyme responsible for the methanol metabolism directly Of indirectly in Mycobacterium sp. JCl.

  • A new $NH_{3}-O_{2}$ oxidation method was estimated by the electrical properties of the fabricated n-MOS transistor. For the C-V characteristic curves the Qox are almost equal to Qss and no hysteresis phenomena are observed. The Id-Vds characteristics show that $NH_{3}-O_{2}$ oxidation method is superior to Dry oxidation.

  • The electrochemistry of benzidine and hydrazobenzene was studied in water-acetonitrile mixed solutions at various pHs and the results are reported. The cyclic voltammetric peak for the oxidation of benzidine shows a pH dependency of -62 mV/pH in the pH range of 0-3.5, no pH dependency between pH values of 3.5 and about 10.5, and of about -50 mV/pH between pH=10.50 and 14.0, indicating that oxidation mechanisms differ depending on the pH of the medium. However, the CV peak for the hydrazobenzene oxidation is shown to be independent of pH of the medium, suggesting that the proton is not involved in the rate limiting step of the electrochemical oxidation of hydrazobenzene to azobenzene. Results of in situ spectroelectrochemical experiments indicate that the oxidation products obtained during the oxidation of benzidine and hydrazobenzene depend on the result of dynamic equilibria taking place at various pHs.

  • Mn-M/Al2O3 (M = Cu, Fe, Co, and Ce) catalysts were prepared for simultaneous oxidation of NO, CO, and CH4, and their oxidation activities were compared. The Mn-Cu/ Al2O3 catalyst with the best simultaneous oxidation activity was characterized by XRD, Raman, XPS, and O2-TPD analysis. The result of XRD indicated that Mn and Cu existed as complex oxides in the Mn-Cu/Al2O3 catalyst. Raman and XPS results showed that electron transfer between Mn ions and Cu ions occurred during the formation of the Mn-O-Cu bond in the Mn-Cu/Al2O3 catalyst. The XPS O 1s and O2-TPD analyses showed that the Mn-Cu/Al2O3 catalyst has more adsorbed oxygen species with high mobility than the Mn/Al2O3 catalyst. The high simultaneous oxidation activity of the Mn-Cu/Al2O3 catalyst is attributed to these results. Gas-phase NO promotes the oxidation reactions of CO and CH4 in the Mn-Cu/Al2O3 catalyst while suppressing the NO oxidation reaction. These results were presumed to be because the oxidized NO was used as an oxidizing agent for CO and CH4. On the other hand, the oxidation reactions of CO and CH4 competed on the Mn-Cu/Al2O3 catalyst, but the effect was not noticeable because the catalyst activation temperature was different.
