The Effects of the Orff Approach to Music Education Programs on Young Children's Musical Expressiveness (Orff 접근법에 의한 음악활동이 유아의 음악표현 능력에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of the Orff Approach to music education programs on singing ability, the ability to play musical instruments, physical expression ability, musical improvisation ability as well as overall musical expressiveness in 5 year old children. The test subjects for this study consisted of fifty-eight children. They were arbitrarily assigned to the experimental group of 31 children and the control group of 27 children. The experimental group was engaged using the Orff music education program for a total of 16 sessions, while the control group conducted music activities according to the annual music education plan of M kindergarten. The main results of this study were as follows : The Orff Approach to music education program was effective in improving abilities in the sub-factors of the four kinds of musical expression ability (singing, playing musical instruments, physical expression and musical improvisation) as well as overall musical expressive abilities. These results indicate that the Orff Approach to music education programs can create positive effects in the developing musical expressiveness of young children.

  • The objective of this paper is to verify the usefulness and validity of ICT-based elementary education for musical composition using multimedia technology. Cearing with the characteristic of musical education, multimedia technology, which has made dazzling progress thanks to the rapid development of computer for the last several year, is expected to be a new alternative to overcome various problems of musical education and enhance students` musical function and knowledge. In particular, if ICT-based musical education is introduced in teaching musical composition, in which many elementary school techers feel difficulties, significant education effects will be produced. ICT-based musical education method in the paper identified imitation and problems in traditional theory-based learning and musical composition class using musical instruments and, as a part of resolving the limitations and problems, instructed elementary students in how to use a computer program and applied the program to musical composition class. As a result, the method maximized learning effect and improved stusents` ability to create melodies in a short term compared to traditional teaching methods.

Study of Creative Musical Play Program for Increasing Peer Relational Skills of Children in Community Child Center (지역아동센터 아동의 또래 관계 기술 증진을 위한 창작 음악극 프로그램 효과 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine how a creative musical play program affected peer relational skills of children in a community child center. The creative musical play program was implemented with six children in K Community Child Center for twenty (20) sessions. To investigate quantitative change, the Peer Relational Skills Scale and the Revised Social Skills Scale (for teachers) were filled out by children and teachers before and after the program. Also, to investigate musical and behavior changes related with peer relational skills in the creative musical program, the responses of children were categorized from the data of the children's responses according to previously identified sub-factors of peer relational skills. The results show that the participants' average scores presented an improvement in peer relational skills. Qualitative analysis of session logs presented that negative factors which had appeared in early sessions changed to positive traits as the sessions went on. In conclusion, the creative musical play program was effective in increasing peer relational skills of children in the community child center.

Musical Score Recognition Using Hierarchical ART2 Algorithm (Hierarchical ART2 알고리즘을 이용한 악보 인식)

  • Methods for effective musical score recognition and efficient editing of musical scores are demanded because functions of computers for researches on musical activities become more and more important parts in recent days. In the conventional methods for handling musical scores manually, there are weak points such as incorrect score symbols in input process and requirement of much time to adjust the incorrect symbols. And also there is another weak point that the scores edited by each application program can be remodified by a specific application program only. In this paper, we proposed a method for automatic musical score recognition of printed musical scores in order to make up for the weak points. In the proposed method, staffs in a scanned score image are eliminated by horizontal histogram, noises are removed by 4 directional edge tracking algorithm, and then musical score symbols are extracted by using Grassfire algorithm. The extracted symbols are recognized by hierarchical ART2 algorithm. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, we used 100 musical scores for experiment. In the experiment, we verified that the proposed method using hierarchical ART2 algorithm is efficient.

The Effect of Vocal Improvisation in Decreasing Musical Performance Anxiety of College Students Majoring in Music (목소리 즉흥을 통한 음대생의 연주불안 감소 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to find out how a vocal improvisation program can improve performance anxiety of students who are majoring in music. Four students participated in the vocal improvisation program for 8 weeks, and Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory was administered prior to and after the completion of program. The following are results from this study. First, participants' anxiety score as measured by STAI-S significantly decreased 16.5 (p < .068) average. Second, a decrease in the subjects' practical anxiety level was quantitatively shown following this program the participants' anxiety score decreased on average by 25.5 (p < .068). Third, the subjects reported a positive musical experience as an outcome of this study. The results of the research as described above support priority researches that the music therapy program influences to decrease musical performance anxiety. The vocal improvisation program used in this study proved effective for decreasing general anxiety and releasing musical performance anxiety. This study indicates future uses of music therapy and music psychotherapy for college students who experience musical performance anxiety.

  • The purpose of this research was to develop and verify applicability of a musical play program aimed at promoting interaction between immigrant preschoolers and Korean preschoolers. A daycare center serving the preschool-age children of Korean nationals and immigrant families were the site for this research. Utilizing the elements of a musical play (e.g., role playing, narration, and joint music activity), the program was developed for improving interaction among preschoolers, while promoting intercultural acceptance by providing the opportunity to be exposed to music from different cultures and engage in the joint activity using such music. For the purpose of investigate the applicability of the developed program, the program was implemented with two groups of preschoolers and each group received the musical play program for 30 minutes twice a week for a total of 6 sessions. The results of this preliminary study indicate that the musical play program promoted interaction between peers from different cultural background. Based on the results of this study, musical play programs may be helpful in promoting interactions between preschoolers from different cultural backgrounds and increase of acceptance of immigrant students in Korean daycares and schools.

  • In Korea the musical was granted very close an art however recently it is rapidly take the position a new trend of the mass culture industry with some of promoted lifestyle due to increased income and with spreading consumer culture of well-being. This study is to consider the musical as a way of OMSU to observe how to produce the musical the with the original one that recorded as the best animation program with highly broadcasting rate as it is broadcasted on TV. It is belongs to a category of musical or a performance, has a good feature of children's program with arranging the broadcasting. Through this study, developing performance art to OSMU, it wishes to utilize people that produce the performance applying the contents of animations and cartoons, to make value added This study is for presenting an effective way of OSMU, with studying and researching the production process of the musical . The original source the cartoon and animation is transferred to a musical with a technical feature of digital audio-visual, with characterizing to an attractive musical characters from the original characters, and with humorize twisted story structure based on the basic storyline.

  • This paper deals with how Korean television musical variety show rose and declined focusing the 'Show Show Show'. 'Show Show Show' was a Korean television musical variety show that ran on TBC-TV every Saturday night at 8pm. until TBC-TV was absorbed into KBS-TV in 1980. Its musical acts, of various kinds, were interspersed with comic turns and special items including dancing, mime, magic, and acrobat. Korean television musical variety show worked on what audiences had in common across generational divides till the late 1970s. 'Show Show Show's catchall format didn't cross the demographic lines like it used to. But the young generation demanded music program that spoke to their own condition in the early 1980s. 'Show Show Show' ended on KBS-TV in July 1983 through the influence of the absorption of TBC-TV into KBS-TV and the changes of cultural circumstances. The decline of the television musical variety show was attributable to the fragmentation of musical taste and the change of viewing behaviors.

The effect of the Modified Voiced Lip Trill (MVoLT) training on vocal changes of musical theater students (응용 입술 트릴 훈련이 뮤지컬 전공 학생의 음성 변화에 미치는 효과)

  • The Modified Voiced Lip Trill (MVoLT) training is a variant of voiced lip-till training characterized by increased loudness, lowered laryngeal position, and lip contact facilitated with fingers. The purpose of the current study was to assess the effect of the MVoLT training program on vocal changes of musical singing theater students. A total of 32 musical theater students (17 males and 15 females, age ranging from 18 to 29) participated in the study. For about three months, each participant was tutored using a systematic program focussing on the MVoLT training, accompanied by certain facilitating strategies. Pre- & post-training multi-dimensional vocal characteristics were assesed and compared. Results showed that cepstral peak prominence during vowel phonation increased after training, while its standard deviation and Cepstral Spectral Index of Dysphonia decreased. When an aerodynamic assessment was performed, maximum phonation time, subglottal pressure, mean airflow rate increased, while electroglottographic measures did not change. In addition, decreased psychometric measures, higher maximum pitch, and increased vocal range were noted after training. In conclusion, the MVoLT was proven to have a potential as an effective and safe training method for musical theater singing.
