  • In this paper, we propose a subspace search-based detector (SSD) with low-complexity to achieve near optimal performance for multiple-input multiple-output systems. As an effective solution to reduce the prohibitive computational complexity of the optimal maximum likelihood detector, a partial candidate symbol vector is generated through a partitioned search space but not the entire search space. In addition, based on a partial candidate symbol vector, an ensemble candidate symbol vector generation considering the whole search space is introduced to produce a near optimal solution. As a result, the proposed SSD achieves near-maximum-likelihood performance while having a significantly reduced computational complexity.

  • This paper studies the design of a multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, where a base station (BS) transmits independent messages to multiple users. The remarkable "dirty paper coding (DPC)" result was first presented by Costa that the capacity does not change if the Gaussian interference is known at the transmitter noncausally. While several implementable DPC schemes have been proposed recently for single-user dirty-paper channels, DPC is still difficult to implement directly in practical multiuser MIMO channels. In this paper, we propose a network channel matrix triangulation (NMT) algorithm for utilizing interference known at the transmitter. The NMT algorithm decomposes a multiuser MIMO channel into a set of parallel, single-input single-output dirty-paper subchannels and then successively employs the DPC to each subchannel. This approach allows us to extend practical single-user DPC techniques to multiuser MIMO downlink cases. We present the sum rate analysis for the proposed scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed schemes approach the sum rate capacity of the multiuser MIMO downlink at moderate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values.

  • When operating in frequency-division duplex (FDD) mode, transmit beamforming in multiple-input single-output (MISO) wireless communication systems typically requires accurate knowledge of downlink channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter. In practical FDD systems, obtaining such downlink CSI at the transmitter is challenging, if not impractical. To circumvent such challenge and support user mobility, we present a new method for transmit beamforming based on simple beam-control commands (BCCs) in MISO FDD mobile systems. We then numerically evaluate the effects of BCC errors in terms of transmit power efficiency, system capacity, and outage probability.

  • High-capacity video, control and situation awareness data should be transmitted efficiently to control robots properly in the ground unmanned system, which requires the technology maximizing the communication range and the data transmission throughput. This technology is connected to the OFDMA(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access)-MIMO(Multiple Input Multiple Output) transmission technology under the limited bandwidth and transmission power. In this paper, we design MIMO communication system for ground unmanned systems, and investigate the data reception performance experimentally, comparing with SISO(Single Input Single Output) system. Experiment results show that the data reception performance of MIMO is significantly improved compared to that of SISO, e.g. 4dB gain of sensitivity and 5dB of SNR at the value MPR = 1, for the mobile stations with $2{\times}2$ STBC diversity.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient soft-output signal detection method for spatially multiplexed multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. The proposed method is based on the ordered successive interference cancellation (OSIC) algorithm, but it significantly improves the performance of the original OSIC algorithm by solving the error propagation problem. The proposed method combines this enhanced OSIC (ESIC) algorithm with a multiple ordering technique in a very efficient way. As a result, the log likelihood ratio (LLR) values can be computed by using a very small set of candidate symbol vectors. The proposed method has been implemented with a $0.13{\mu}m$ CMOS technology for a $4{\times}4$ 16-QAM MIMO system. The simulation and implementation results show that the proposed detector provides a very good solution in terms of performance and hardware complexity.

  • Recently, the demand has continued to increase for higher data rates and improved multimedia services through wireless internet access. In order to increase the data rate and link reliability, 3GPP LTE/A and IEEE 802.16e/m WiMAX systems incorporate MIMO transmission schemes. Since the hardware complexity increases with the number of transmit data streams and mobile devices have limited physical dimensions, an multiple input multiple output (MIMO) ystem with two antennas at both the transmitter and the receiver ($2{\times}2$) is considered to be a possible solution for mobile devices. In this paper, a low-complexity soft output MIMO symbol detector based on Modified-SQRD is proposed for mobile devices with two transmit and two receive antennas.

  • Recently, a variety of reduced complexity soft-in soft-output detection algorithms have been introduced for iterative detection and decoding (IDD) systems. However, it is still challenging to implement soft-in soft-output detectors for MIMO systems due to heavy burden in computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a soft detection algorithm for MIMO systems which performs close to the full dimensional joint detection, yet offers significant complexity reduction over the existing detectors. The proposed algorithm, referred to as soft-input soft-output successive group (SSG) detector, detects a subset of symbols (called a symbol group) successively using a deliberately designed preprocessing to suppress the inter-group interference. In fact, the proposed preprocessor mitigates the effect of the interfering symbol groups successively using a priori information of the undetected groups and a posteriori information of the detected groups. Simulation results on realistic MIMO systems demonstrate that the proposed SSG detector achieves considerable complexity reduction over the conventional approaches with negligible performance loss.

  • The aggregation on linear large-scale dynamic systems is examined in this paper and a "two-step" approach is proposed. In this procedure, the aggregated system consists of two subsystems. The first subsystem represents aggregation through the retainment of dominant eigenvalues of the original system, leading to a first approximation of the desired output of the original system. The purpose of augmenting it with a second subsystem is to provide an estimation of the error on the first approximation, thus permitting a second correction to the output approximation and resulting in an output approximation of greater accuracy. Optimization techniques are discussed for the determination of unknown parameters in the aggregated system. These techniques use minimization principles of certain suitable performance indices and are developed for both single input-single output and multiple input-multiple output system. Numerical examples illustrating these procedures are given and the results are compared with those obtained using existing methods. Finally, a pharmacokinetics problem is studied from the aggregation point of view.

  • This paper addresses the issue of position control of a chain of multiple mass-spring-damper (CMMSD) units which can be found in many physical systems. The dynamic model of a CMMSD system with any degrees of freedom is expressed in a closed-form for the convenience of the controller design. Backstepping and model reference adaptive control (MRAC) approaches are then used to develop two adaptive output feedback controllers to control the position of a CMMSD system. The proposed controllers rely on the measurements of the input (force) and the output (position of the mass unit at the end of the chain) of the system without the knowledge of its parameters and internal states. Simulations are used to verify the effectiveness of the controllers

  • This paper studies the uplink resource allocation for multiple radio access (MRA) in reconfigurable radio systems, where multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) multicarrier-code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) and MIMO orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) networks coexist. By assuming multi-radio user equipment with network-guided operation, the optimal resource allocation for MRA is analyzed as a cross-layer optimization framework with and without fairness consideration to maximize the uplink sum-rate capacity. Numerical results reveal that parallel MRA, which uses MC-CDMA and OFDMA networks concurrently, outperforms the performance of each MC-CDMA and OFDMA network by exploiting the multiuser selection diversity.
