  • The analysis of human arm motion during steering maneuver is carried out for investigation of man-machine interface of driver and steering system Each arm is modeled as interconnection of upper arm, lower arm, and hand by rotational joints that can properly represents permissible joint motion, and both arms are connected to a steering wheel through spring and damper at the contact points. The joint motion law during steering motion is determined through the measurement of each arm movement, and subsequent inverse kinematic analysis. Combining the joint motion law and inverse dynamic analysis, joint stiffness of arm is estimated. Arm dynamic analysis model for steering maneuver is setup, and is validated through the comparison with experimentally measured data, which shows relatively good agreement. To demonstrate the usefulness of the arm model, it is applied to study the effect of steering column angle on the steering motion.

  • A numerical approach for performing kinematic design sensitivity analysis of vehicle suspension systems is presented. Compared with the conventional analytical methods, which require explicit derivation of sensitivity equations, the proposed numerical method can be applied to any type of suspension systems without obtaining sensitivity equations, once any kinematic analysis procedure is established. To obtain sensitivity equations, a numerical differentiation algorithm that uses the third order Lagrange polynomial is developed. The algorithm efficiently and accurately computes the sensitivity of various vehicle static design factors with respect to kinematic design variables. Through a suspension design problem, the validity and usefulness of the method is demonstrated.

  • Dynamic analysis of a vehicle is carried out with rigid body and flexible body models. The chassis of the vehicle is treated as flexible body in the flexible body model, and vibration normal modes are considered to account for elastic deformation of the component. Using output from the modal analysis in the finite element program, input data for the dynamic analysis with flexible body is generated. To achieve the computational efficiency, SUPERELEMENT technique is used for the vehicle suspension subsisted. The computer simulation time with suspension superelement was much reduced due to the reduction of coordinates and no kinematic constraint in the system.

  • The objective of this study was to analyze a stability of sideways overturning of a forwarder developed by the Forestry Research Institute. The stability analysis was conducted using a multibody dynamic analysis program. VisualNastran Desktop. A solid model of the forwarder was constructed and its physical properties such as mass, mass center and mass moment of inertia were determined on 3D CAD modeler of the Solid Edge 8.0. 3D simulations of sideways overturning of the forwarder were also performed on the Visual Nastran using the solid model when it traveled across the slope and traversed over an up-hill side obstacle. Stability comparison between a bogie-wheeled and a 6-wheeled forwarders was also made and found that the bogie-wheeled forwarder was more stable than the 6-wheeled one on slopes. The safety speeds of the forwarder predicted by the simulation under various conditions can be used as a guideline for safe operations of forwarders in mountainous area. The technique of using a solid model for the sability analysis can also be applied successfully to other vehicles like agricultural tractors, loaders and construction equipments.

  • Since the performance of the circuit breaker mainly depends on the spring operating mechanism, the analysis of the spring operating mechanism is required. The spring, especially closing spring, stores the deformation energy due to the compression and then accelerates the big loads rapidly in the circuit breaker. To accurately carry out the kinematic and dynamic analysis of the circuit breaker, the precise modeling of the spring behavior is necessary. In this paper, the static stiffness of the spring is captured by using the tester. When the spring is used in the circuit breaker, it is installed horizontally. Therefore, Sine excitation tests are carried out horizontal and vertical direction. Three types of spring models such as a linear spring model, modal spring model, and nodal spring model are suggested and compared with the experimental results.

  • In this paper, the combined system equation of motion, which can analyze the dynamic interaction between pantograph and catenary system, is derived by adopting absolute nodal coordinates and rigid body coordinates. The analysis results are compared with real experiment data from test running of Korean high-speed train (HSR 350x). In addition, a computation method for the dynamic stress of contact wire is presented using the derived system equation of motion. This method might be good example and significant in that the structural and multibody dynamics model can be unified into one numerical system.

  • Juryeonggu is a cuboctahedral die that was used during the Silla period in ancient Korea. This cuboctahedral die consists of two different penal servitudes of 14 sides; however, its equal probability distribution enables it to be used as a die. In this paper, a precise cuboctahedral die, Juryeonggu, was manufactured, and its probability was measured through experiments. Next, the probability was verified through Multibody-dynamics (MBD) modeling and analysis, and the effect of the coefficient of friction on the probability distribution was studied.

  • It is known that residual aligning torque of tires causes vehicle pull. There is, however, only a little literature available which shows how the residual aligning torque of tires causes vehicle pull. In this paper, a vehicle model in two degrees of freedom was adopted for the analysis of a vehicle under the straight-ahead motion. The analysis with this vehicle model clearly shows the effect of residual aligning torque of tires on vehicle pull. In order to show the validity of the analysis, a vehicle commercially available was selected. This vehicle was modeled in 137 degrees of freedom system with multibody dynamics software. Vehicle pull simulation results show that vehicle model drifts in lateral direction due to the residual aligning torque of tires. Vehicle test results with the car were also included.

  • This paper suggests a method of the forward dynamic analysis for the computer simulation on the analysis of the dynamic behavior for biped walking robot. The equations f motion of the system or the simulation are constructed by using the Method of the multibody dynamics which is powerful method for modeling of the complex biped system. For the simplicity of simulation, we consider that the sole of the contacting foot is affected by the reaction forces for tree structure system topology instead of the addition or deletion of the kinematic constraints. The ground reaction forces can be modeled using the simple spring and damper model at the three contacting points on the sole of the foot. For minimizing the errors of numerical integration, the number of equations of motion is minimized by adding the driving constraints or a controller instead of the direct driving torques.

  • For the analysis of dynamic contact between a catenary and a pantograph of high-speed electrical train, the numerical solution of the equations of motion of the vehicle pantograph and the catenary system subjected to the contact condition is obtained. The whole equations of motion of the catenary and the pantograph are simultaneously time integrated with the strict application of the contact condition. For the stability of the numerical solution, with the cubic spline interpolation of the catenary displacement, the velocity and acceleration constraints as well as the displacement constraint are imposed on the contact point. Especially it is shown that the Coriolis and centripetal accelerations are critical for the accuracy and stability of the computation.
